at New York. ARADCOM was to furnish the personnel programmed<br />
to be used in the NCC during Modes I and II;<br />
ADC was to furnish the personnel t~ perform detection<br />
and identification only on a one-shift basis. In keeping<br />
with this withdrawal of a reGuirement for control<br />
capability at Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, the requirement<br />
for AN/GPA-3',Ps and AN/GPA-67' s at these HCC's was<br />
deleted.<br />
These eleven NCC's ware the onli ones in the soft<br />
SAGE area to Wilich ADC WOttle/. ;1:1 dc' tc ·~,\);.·nish personnel.<br />
Their areas covered tbe No,.U'.'a·,;t: a portion .;.;: the<br />
northern Mid-west in the Chi~!aEC;-Dp.ti"oit: area, the Northwest,<br />
and California. This left large a:'eas not covered.<br />
It was decided to leave in terceptol~s, in Mode 111 operations,<br />
to operate autonomously in the areas not covered.<br />
But in those areas where Nike was to be ~mployed a further<br />
provision had to be made. Hike could not operate<br />
autonomously as could interceptors; Nike had. t.o be provided<br />
at least a limited identification and control<br />
capability. These areas were dE;'sif~nated Catego::-. (n.<br />
Th~ lat.ter was defined as an area of point tar~et<br />
dimensions under the control of a~ NCC with limited identification<br />
and control facilities. Ten defens~ areas were<br />
assigned to this category. Loring AFB, Fairchild AFB.<br />
Ellsworth AFB, Minneapolis, Malmstro~ AFB, Glasgow AFB,<br />
Minot AFB, Mt. Home AFB. Davis-Monthan AFB, and Offutt<br />
AYE. The NCC' s were to be mann~!c. 1)y ARADCOM. personnel<br />
('nly. If the ADA complex was loca t ed at a SAC base, the<br />
CO:lt~,'ol facility was to b~ able te· provide ident ification<br />
of and protection for SAC bon!bers in addition to its<br />
other capabilities.<br />
