At the recent election of officers for the
1 979 80 season. Variety Club Women Tent 1
chose these women to hold offices for the com
ing year: Barbara Goldberg, president,
Maryon Mund, first vice president, Barbara
Goldstein, second vice president, Bernice
Cohen, recording secretary. Dorothy Berger,
financial secretary, Eunice S. Carter, corresponding
secretary, and Rosa Schevker,
treasurer.
Roland Bruscup, president of 1ATSE Local
181 and projectionist at the Playhouse
iSchwaber World Fare Cinemas), entered St.
Agnes Hospital July 7 to undergo tests.
Two movies filmed in Baltimore are making
their debuts this month. Actor Al Pacino's
"... And Justice for All" is scheduled to be
released Aug. 17 here in two theatres. It was
made in the city last year and shows off local
attractions.
"The Senator." filmed here about two years
ago, will be shown at two area theatres begin
ning Aug. 24 under us new title, "The Seduction
of Joe Tynan." Star and writer of the film,
Alan Alda. is filmed with thousands of
Baltimoreans who played the parts of conven
tion delegates and other small roles.
"The Villain" was scheduled to open Aug.
17 at two hardtops. Security Mall Cinema and
Perring Plaza Cinema, and three drive-ins, the
Governor Ritchie, Pulaski and Northpoint.
"The Main Event" is proving to be the
main entertainment event these days at the
York Road Cinema, Security Mall Cinema
and Jumper Cinema. It has been showing at
these three theatres now for two months.
Now on an exclusive basis at the Hip
podrome Theatre (JF) is "The Wanderers" and
co feature "Sparkle."
Mike Guiliano wrote in the News American
about "Breaking Away," the touching comedy
about four teen-agers growing up in the
Midwest that has been praised for its
naturalness, and Daniel Stern, a 22 year-old
native of suburban Bethesda, Md., who plays
one of the four young men. Giuliano said,
"Just as 'Breaking Away' is the 'sleeper' of the
year, its cast of unknowns is well on its way to
screen careers.
"Stern began acting while attending
Bethesda Chevy Chase High School.
Although he auditioned last year for Peter
Yates, who was directing playwright Steve
Tesich's 'The Passing Game' at the American
Palace Theatre, and didn't get the part, he did
get his part in 'Breaking Away' through them.
Yates directed 'Breaking Away' and Tesich
wrote it.
"Among his tentative offers currently is one
to appear in Woody Allen's next film," he said.
"That ain't bad for a 22 year-old who is just as
casual and gawky as any other kid on a
Bethesda block."
CINCINNATI
Jack Frazee, district manager for Chakres
Theatres, underwent open heart surgery Aug.
20 at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas.
The operation went well and as of press time
Jack is recovering in the hospital's intensive
care section. All well wishers should direct
their cards to him at the hospital.

manages to undershoot at every point the
low standards set for it by the 1 972 film from
which it was spun."
Charleston youths rebelling
against price of admissions
CHARLESTON. W.Va.-A group of
Charleston area teen-agers are asking a basic
question regarding individual rights, if at the
age of 12 they have to pay adult prices to gain
admission to a film, then why should they be
barred from seeing R rated movies until their
17th birthday
The youths, all current or recently
graduated students of Hayes Junior High, are
not so much interested in seeing what the
MPAA deems they shouldn't, but in
fighting
the skyrocketing cost of summer vacation.
At $3.50 a shot, movies, the teen-agers complain,
take a sizable chunk of allowance and
lawn-mowing money.
"When you go to the movies, it costs an arm
and a leg," said 12 year -old Mike Tutko. "If
you want to buy popcorn, it's up to almost
$5."
The youthful coalition has taken its case to
the Human Rights Commission and to city
hall. "They said they couldn't do anything."
Tutko said.
The five youngsters propose a simple, twinoption
plan: "We'd like to see a teenage price,
or have them raise the adult age," said 13-yearold
Greg Badger.
The youths are considering a petition drive
followed by a boycott: "1 know we can get a
whole bunch of people," said David Keeney,
1 3. In addition, a class action suit might be filed.
