Westmoreland Cultural Trust celebrated its volunteers
on Thursday, March 29, 2012, at the Greensburg Garden
& Civic Center. Marty McGuire, new Special Event
Coordinator, introduced herself and expressed her
anticipation in working with all of the volunteers after having
such a wonderful experience with the Hollywood Party at
The Palace committee. She looked forward to meeting so
many as she and our Trust managers helped serve dinner
to our volunteers.
Following dinner, Trust President Mike Langer thanked the
volunteers for their contributions. He began by saying that
Volunteers make all the difference. He went on to share the
estimated value of volunteer hours if it were translated into
Paula Pedicone, Ginny Panigall, Magdelyn Vale, Mary Balbach dollars and cents. Smiles broadened and heads nodded
with pride to find that 12,000 hours are clocked annually by
our various volunteers. Impressively, even at the low end of the industry rate of ten dollars an hour, this translates to a gift
of time to the Trust of $120,000 dollars in 2011! Mike expressed the hope that our volunteers feel a sense of achievement
and satisfaction knowing that by volunteering for Westmoreland Cultural Trust, they continue to create a vibrant, energized
community.
There has been a major increase in Palace shows and patrons along with a substantial increase in the number of special
events per year. This has been accomplished without an increase in the number of ushers at The Palace or WCT
personnel, emphasizing further the need and impact of having the support of our volunteers. Mike ended by thanking
all volunteers for their incredible work, time and energy, kindness and generosity, without which we could not succeed.
Vonnie Goldsborough also took the opportunity to thank the volunteers for their generous contributions of time and talent
leading to another successful year of fundraisers, special events and Palace performances. She thanked them personally
for friendships, their encouragement, and their skills and advice: “In no way, shape or form, could I do this without you!”
Vonnie then asked groups to stand for a round of applause. She began by thanking all those who work behind the scenes,
working from home, stuffing envelopes, baking cookies or creating tree ornaments.
Vonnie asked Elinor Giovannini to join her at the podium, indicating that Elinor has been with the Trust as an usher at The
Palace Theatre for twelve years! “How many people have seen that smile How many have been greeted so pleasantly
and effortlessly by Elinor” Vonnie asked all of the theatre ushers to stand for a round of applause expressing that they
are truly the face of the Trust, the helpful hand of the Trust for more than 100 performances a year at The Palace and the
Greensburg Garden & Civic Center.
Mike and Vonnie then presented gifts of appreciation to all committee chairs for the 2011 major events to include Peg Mike Langer and Elinor Giovannini
Colosimo and Dawna Saunders, Hollywood Party at The Palace; Clarice ONeal and Katie Mahoney (unable to attend),
Bocce nel Giardino; Jane Church, Lana Booher and Jill Briercheck,
Holiday Fashion Fantasy. Libby Christopher and Sean Cassidy (unable
to attend) will be presented with plaques as winners of the 2011 Thank
Goodness It’s Summer bartender challenge for the fourth consecutive
year.
Michael Philopena and Jill Briercheck
Sandy Palmer and Jane Church
Marty welcomes our guests
Westmoreland Cultural Trust wishes to thank Caffe Barista for a delicious
dinner, and our celebration sponsors, First Commonwealth Bank and the
chocolate shoppe.
This event is a small way of thanking our volunteers who have generously
contributed their time and talents toward making our fundraisers fun
and successful! We couldn’t do it without them! If you run into any
of our volunteers and ushers at the theatre, on the streets, shopping
at a nearby grocery store, please thank them for their contributions to
March 1st, Palace Theatre Manager Linda Kubas welcomed Saint Vincent College students studying
Arts Management to a tour of The Palace Theatre. At the conclusion of the tour, Linda and Technical
Coordinator Matt Starry, joined by Production Assistants Lee Kahle and Mark Duman, spoke to the
students about the various responsibilities and opportunities of Theatre Management and Production
Management. Topics included scheduling, marketing, box office management and sales, staging a
show and working with touring production teams and talent. April 12th, Trust President Mike Langer
and Director of Marketing & Programming Teresa Baughman spoke to this same group about the
Trust, its mission and history, programs and fundraisers, and the Trust’s relationship to government,
corporate and individual funders.
March 27th, Linda and Matt took their “show on the road” addressing a seminar at the University of
Pittsburgh at Greensburg. This seminar addressed the value of ACTING I as a life skill, even if not a
performance major. Matt spoke of his experience as an actor and acting teacher who moved away
from performance to technical theatre. Linda worked the opposite. Linda was always a technical
theatre practitioner but at one point was forced to take an acting class and perform in a show. Both
Matt and Linda have learned to apply their acting experiences to their non-theatrical career paths.
Hollywood Party
at The Palace!
In the words of B.A. Baracus of the hit eighties television show The A Team, “I pity the fool” who did not attend this year’s Hollywood Party at the Palace as we traveled “Back
to the 80’s”. Where better to begin the journey than at the Pre-party on the historic Palace theatre stage. Greeting guests to this exclusive gathering was WCT President
Michael Langer. Big haired girls and gnarly dressed guests stopped by for their private photo shoot before being entertained by a cavalcade of MTV’s biggest and best stars.
Turning back the TV remote to party to the music of Tina Turner, The Police, Cyndi Lauper, and the B-52’s guests traveled to The Love Shack to answer the question, “Who
killed the Video Star and What’s Love Got To Do With It” Once again, as they have for seven years, Director of
Entertainment Tony Marino and choreographer Renata Marino brought us back in time and set the stage for a
“totally awesome” evening. Under the musical direction of Eric Barchiesi, the music of the Me Generation filled
the air. Champagne flowed and The Supper Club and Caffé Barista provided butler service of totally tubular hors
d’oeuvres while MTV Pop-Ups flashed facts about our sponsors, old school style, on a huge screen overhead.
Roaming through the backstage antics of The Stage Right Hollywood Sensations, time travelers spied a glimpse of
our entertainers rehearsing their lines and gelling their Mullocks before joining our event goers at the edge of the
red carpet. Arriving guests were entertained by the flash dancing performance of the American rock band Journey’s
“Don’t Stop Believin’” before turning into the Megan Suite which was transformed into… what else but The Senior
Prom circa 1985!
The Big Dance was a staple of eighties movies and so we celebrated dance and the eighties in this iconic setting. Fluorescent-colored balloons and high school prom style
centerpieces created a wicked hot look to ensure that all guests would “Have the Time of Their Life” while feasting on the cuisine of Duane’s Café on Grove, Chef Dato’s Table,
Libras, Peking Garden and Caffé Barista. Huey Lewis kicked off the night with The Heart of Rock and Roll and a totally tubular evening of dancing to the music of Queen, Joan
Jett, Twisted Sister, and Whip It by Devo and of course the Material Girl herself, Madonna, all stopped by for a break dance on the dance floor.
Leaving the prom, Dudes and Dudettes toured the back lot at MGM Studios for blockbuster music from Ghostbusters, Footloose, a duet by Lionel Ritchie and Diana Ross as
well as a performance of the ultimate 80’s music video, Michael Jackson’s Thriller. A special tribute performance of Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” brought a tear
to the eye of some guests.
With all these celebrity appearances and radical partying, guests needing a break from the fun for a while stopped by Cheers in the mezzanine to join in the antics of Norm,
Coach, Cliff and Dr. Frasier ‘cause sometimes you want to go where everyone knows your name. While visitors caught up on episodes of classic 80’s TV like The Cosby Show,
The Facts of Life and Bay Watch, the Greensburg Country Club, Buffalo Wild Wings, JCorks, One Eleven, and The Supper Club ensured that you wouldn’t have to wait for a
table at Melville’s to share some of the best that our local restaurants have to offer.
Meanwhile, upstairs in the Living Room, the emcee for the evening, played by John Noble, brought the Late Show
with David Letterman to life while Saturday Night Live had visits from the Church Lady, Martin Short, Billy Crystal
and of course stupid human tricks! David Letterman
even created a special Top Ten List of reasons that
Hollywood Party at the Palace is the greatest event in
Thank you...
With enthusiasm and sincerity, thank you to
our Hollywood Party committee co-chaired by
Peg Colosimo and Dawna Saunders. Thank
you to: Nancy Anderson, Jane Church, Alaina
Dangro, Susan Dickson-Hauser, Lyn Emrick, John
Herrmann, Lisa Hoffman, Kathy Hollahan, Mary
Lou Hugus, Anthony Marino, Clarice ONeal, Chris
Orosz, Anna Peagler, Paula Pedicone, Gary Pratt,
Jan Taylor and Magdelyn Vale. It is only through
their endless support, creativity and just plain
hard work that our guests were treated to another
fabulous adventure going Back to the 80s!
We couldn’t do it without you! Sincerely, Vonnie
the world! And like, Oh my gosh, hope you wore your
Spandex cause the sweets and desserts provided by
Janie Burd, Enrico Biscotti Co., Libras, Barb Manko,
Nonna’s Heavenly Treats, Steel Penny Cakes, The
Cupcake Shoppe, and Sugar & Cream at The Train
Station kept this crowd hollering, “I’ll be back!”
As party goers shed their Members Only Jackets and
tied up their high top sneakers Phil Collins warned, I
can feel it comin’ in the air tonight as the MGM Back Lot
and the 80’s Prom presented the Grand Finale where
who else but Bruce Springstein shared Born in The USA and Lee Greenwood made us all Proud To Be An American
before a Dy-No-Mite performance of Dirty Dancing had guests moving back the tables so they could party hardy to
the max! Word!
The music and the clothing may have defined the 80’s but the generosity and support of our guests and sponsors
define everything that ensures our success…fur sure!

Danielle Shaffer is the owner and partner of Aw Else Boutique, a fashionable women’s
boutique that “introduces a bit of the Pittsburgh Shadyside to Greensburg by bringing unique
brands and fashionable styles to the area. We also wanted to focus on finding exceptionally
designed products either handmade or designed in the USA.” When asked why she wanted to
open a women’s boutique, Danielle responded, “I love this question! I love fashion. I love how
something so small like a ring or scarf can change how you feel in an outfit. It’s kind of funny
how men can tell us women a thousand times how beautiful we look but when another woman
compliments us – it puts the spark back in our fire. Confidence goes up and we feel great! That’s
what I love hearing from our customers – how everyone raved about their accessories. My drive
is to provide women with accessories that make them feel good.”
Danielle and her partner, Mark White, wanted to implement a convenient yet stylish way
to change the way women accessorize. With Danielle’s previous traveling career, she found
herself struggling to find ways to eliminate the excess luggage. Hence, you’ll find several
interchangeable lines at Aw Else Boutique geared to simplify the way you change your
accessories. This couple proudly opened for business on August 1, 2011.
Both Mark and Danielle reside in Greensburg; Danielle with her four year old daughter, Ella,
and Mark and his three beautiful girls Ashley, Amanda, and Ally. Danielle shared, “One question
asked mostly by our customers is,
What does Aw Else Boutique stand
for We love telling this story. The
name ‘Aw Else’ Boutique came from
Mark’s girls initials Ashley, Ally and
Amanda White = “Aw” and “Else” is
Ella Louise Shaffer. It meant a lot to
us keeping our family values at the
forefront of our business.”
and Mark while checking out the
