on Sunday, May 15, 2011
in Commissioners Hall at
the Youngwood campus
of Westmoreland County
Community College. The
GACC honored 53 high
school seniors from 18
Judges McCormick and Pezze Awards of Artistic Merit
13th Annual Achievement in the Arts Awards Banquet
Westmoreland County high schools for their outstanding efforts in music,
theater and the visual arts.
The emcee for the evening was Marvin Huls, Professor of Music at Seton Hill
University. He welcomed the audience by stating, “It is a difficult time for those of
us in the arts, but I firmly believe this: The arts
are fundamental to our educational system.”
He continued and relayed seven pieces of
advice to the graduating seniors including,
“Resolve to be passionate about your art.
Resolve to say ‘thank you’ more, especially
to those special people who have brought
you to this point and who were important in
your artistic development. Resolve to offer
excuses less. Resolve to do something that
helps someone but benefits you in no way.
Resolve to be where you said you’d be (and

mission is to provide cultural and economic development
through live performing arts are great. Over the last
few years, a down economy and foundation giving
reductions have presented a number of financial
challenges. However, through this difficult time, the
Trust has been able to count on members such as you
who are willing to not only renew their membership but

Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)’s Walk to Cure Diabetes. We
