The College’s name and emblem
The Chinese name of the College “mingde 眀 徳 ” is derived from the
Chinese motto of the University of Hong Kong, “mingde gewu 眀 徳 格 物 ”
(“to manifest virtue and to investigate things”). It contains the meaning of
passing on the University’s founding spirit and quality education. “Mingde
gewu” are ancient characters which come from the Confucian classic, The
Great Learning《 大 學 》. That the Chinese character “ming” ( 眀 ) contains
an extra stroke, and the character “de” ( 徳 ) one stroke fewer than usual
is deliberate. The characters are written in the lishu ( 隸 書 ) calligraphic
style in vogue during the Han Dynasty, and which is still used for the
University’s formal inscriptions today. The English name “Centennial
College”, pays homage to its establishment which coincides with the
University of Hong Kong’s centenary and represents an educational
milestone in the new century.
載 以 前 , 本 港 第 一 所 大 學 香 港 大 學 ( 港 大 ) 正 式 成
百 立 , 為 香 港 教 育 史 奠 下 重 要 里 程 碑 。 百 年 後 的 今
天 , 港 大 為 配 合 21 世 紀 的 教 育 需 要 , 宣 布 成 立 明 德 學 院 ,
並 於 3 月 7 日 假 香 港 大 學 黃 麗 松 講 堂 舉 行 成 立 典 禮 , 標 誌 著
港 大 延 展 教 育 服 務 至 自 資 學 位 的 新 里 程 。 當 日 有 逾 百 名 來
自 政 府 、 教 育 界 、 工 商 界 的 嘉 賓 及 社 會 賢 達 蒞 臨 到 賀 。
明 德 學 院 之 緣 起
大 學 之 道 , 在 明 明 德 。 明 德 學 院 以 東 方 儒 家 的 明 德 至 善 、 慎 思
明 辨 思 想 為 經 , 西 方 liberal education 精 神 為 緯 ; 以 博 文 為 教 學
內 容 , 明 德 至 善 為 教 學 理 想 , 明 辨 慎 思 為 思 考 方 法 , 通 過 跨 學
科 的 課 程 , 深 度 的 專 業 及 知 識 培 訓 , 廣 度 開 拓 及 堅 實 學 生 的 人
文 視 野 , 助 學 生 欣 賞 不 同 學 科 的 價 值 , 培 養 「 以 人 為 本 」 的 精
神 。 正 如 校 董 會 主 席 張 永 霖 先 生 表 示 :「 明 德 學 院 希 望 透 過 『 通
博 教 育 』, 培 育 具 遠 見 、 協 作 溝 通 及 解 決 問 題 能 力 、 懂 尊 重 及 接
納 不 同 見 解 、 積 極 追 求 卓 越 的 年 青 一 代 , 讓 他 們 學 以 所 用 , 貢 獻
社 會 。」
百 載 傳 承 明 德 學 院 正 式 成 立
Centennial College, the continuation
of a hundred years heritage
The establishment of the University of Hong Kong, the first tertiary institution, in
1911/12, marked a milestone in the history of Hong Kong education. In 2012, during
its centenary year, the University of Hong Kong announced the official establishment
of the Centennial College to cater for the educational needs of 21st century Hong
Kong. The launching ceremony of the College was held at the Rayson Huang Theatre,
the University of Hong Kong on 7 March, with the honourable presence of a hundred
guests from the government, the education and business sectors, and distinguished
members of the community.
The Story
The College’s philosophy is the aggregation of wisdom of the East and the West. The Confuscian
thinking of manifesting virtues to the full and cautious thinking with the spirit of inquiry, and the
liberal education advocated by the West are to be emphasised. Through a series of crossdisciplinary
courses, in-depth knowledge building and professional training, it is hoped to
broaden students’ horizons, helping them appreciate the beauty of different knowledge areas
and instilling in them a people-oriented spirit. As Mr. Linus Cheung, Chairman of the Board of
Governors said, “Through the emphasis on liberal education, the College hopes to develop
the younger generation into one that possesses the ability to communicate and solve, who are
willing to respect and appreciate different ideas and opinions, who have vision and the urge to
excel, and who can work for the a greater good of the society in various ways.”
校 名 校 徽 含 義 深 遠
「 眀 徳 學 院 」 中 「 眀 徳 」 二 字 , 取 自 香 港 大 學 校 訓 「 明 德 格 物 」, 具
傳 承 港 大 辦 學 理 念 及 優 質 教 育 的 含 義 。「 眀 徳 」 為 古 字 , 出 自 儒 家 經
典 《 大 學 》, 有 追 求 卓 越 道 德 的 意 思 。「 眀 」 字 多 寫 一 橫 ,「 徳 」 字
少 寫 一 橫 , 皆 為 漢 代 隸 書 書 法 中 所 常 見 , 港 大 沿 用 至 今 。 而 英 文 名 字
Centennial College 中 的 Centennial 則 闡 明 建 校 之 際 , 適 逢 港 大 百 年 校
慶 , 饒 富 新 世 紀 創 新 里 程 之 意 。
明 德 學 院 校 徽 以 金 獅 及 古 字 「 眀 」 化 成 的 藍 綠 色 盾 型 圖 案 組 成 , 設 計
和 用 色 與 港 大 校 徽 相 呼 應 。 金 獅 象 徵 「 力 量 、 榮 耀 與 智 慧 」;「 眀 」
字 的 色 調 由 代 表 香 港 島 與 海 水 的 藍 色 及 綠 色 混 合 而 成 , 配 以 金 獅 , 體
現 學 院 立 足 香 港 , 面 向 國 際 的 視 野 。
為 自 資 學 位 教 育 奠 下 基 礎
明 德 學 院 跟 香 港 大 學 專 業 進 修 學 院 同 屬 香 港 大 學 機 構 成 員 , 明 德 學 院
將 肩 負 為 本 港 提 供 高 質 素 自 資 學 位 課 程 的 重 任 。 明 德 學 院 根 據 《 專 上
學 院 條 例 》( 第 320 章 ), 已 通 過 香 港 學 術 及 職 業 資 歷 評 審 局 的 評 審 ,
正 式 註 冊 為 認 可 專 上 學 院 , 提 供 四 年 制 全 日 自 資 學 位 課 程 , 並 於 九 月
正 式 開 辦 學 士 學 位 課 程 。
The emblem is a combination of a golden lion and a shield design
derived from the ancient character of the word “ming 眀 ” which echoes
with the emblem design of the University of Hong Kong. The golden lion
symbolises “power, reputation and wisdom”. The turquoise shield is an
integration of the ancient Chinese character “ming 眀 ” ; its mixture of blue
and green represents Hong Kong Island and the sea. The shield, with
the golden lion signifying the College being located in Hong Kong, has
a global perspective.
To lay the foundation of self-financing higher
education
Being a member of The University of Hong Kong Group like HKU SPACE,
the Centennial College has taken up the responsibility of offering high
quality self-financing degree programmes. Under the Post-secondary
Colleges Ordinance (CAP 320), the College has successfully gained the
validation from the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic
and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) and will start offering fulltime,
four-year self-financing degree programmes from September this
year.
