The South Adelaide and Sturt
clash at Hickinbotham Oval will
be the first SANFL match played on
Good Friday.
While it is an innovative move,
playing football on one of
Christianity’s two sacred days has
its opponents.
The AFL has taken playing on
Good Friday off the agenda.
However last season in Western
Australia, Subiaco and East Perth
played the first State League game
on Good Friday.
“It’s a good innovation by the
footy club, as a lot of people are
looking for something to do in the
afternoon on Good Friday,” South
Adelaide coach Ron Fuller said.
“People can still spend time with
their family, and those who are
religious can still go to church then

“I think the opportunity allows us
to showcase the game to an
audience that may not be able to
make it at other times, and by
starting at 5pm families can get
home before it gets too late, with
most of the weekend left to do
other things.”
There has been divided opinion
on whether to play sport on Good
Friday for many years, although the
National Rugby League has
regularly played on the day since
the mid-1990s, and it is a traditional
day on the calendar in the English
Premier League.
The AFL conducted an online poll
in 2010, with only 37 per cent of
respondents in favour of playing
football on Good Friday (54 per
cent against and 9 per cent not
bothered). Last year, radio station
FIVEaa held a similar poll, with 54
per cent for playing and 46 per
cent against.

While Christians observe a
religious holiday commemorating
the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and
his death at Calvary, State Leagues
have looked at other ways to
highlight their competitions away
from the glare of the AFL.
Four-time Sturt premiership player
and former Central District coach
Daryl Hicks, who has been a
deacon in the Catholic Church for
the past five years, is against the
move, as he feels Good Friday has
enormous significance to the
Christian Church.
“Good Friday is one of two days of
the year (Christmas the other),
where sport should be banned,”
Daryl said.
“It is not appropriate, and when I
was a player or official, I would
have made myself unavailable, as
would a large proportion of the
population.
“On Good Friday we will hold a
10am service, ‘Way of the Cross’,
for our youth. While at 3pm, we will
celebrate the most important feast
of the year - honouring the death of
Christ - we will be packed.
“It amazes me each year how we
always overflow on Good Friday
services. It shows where people’s
faith lies.”
In last year’s Good Friday game in
the WAFL, Subiaco won by 16
points in front of 4457 people, the
fifth best minor round crowd of the
season – with the best two on the
Queen’s Birthday Monday – and
better than all minor finals.
“For the players it is about
preparing and playing a game of
football,” Sturt Magarey Medallist
Jade Sheedy said.
“It was a club decision and while
traditionally it hasn’t been done
before, they wanted to give it a go.
The players haven’t really talked
about it, although it may affect
some.
“The SANFL is a big business and
if they think it can be a success,
why not give it a go There used to
be controversy about people
working on Sundays, but now that’s
the norm.”

Yes the rumours are true. The
Phantom has been asked to
draw up a blueprint for a night
Grand Final.
Being a football guru, I have
decided that just changing from
daylight to nocturnal is not enough.
Oh, no, not enough by a long shot.
What we need is some really
radical stuff to top the great
extravaganza to our south east
where Meatloaf Two is a distinct
possibility.
So on Sunday night I put down
my preview copy of the Crows
Cookbook (by the way, what
happened to the recipes I
submitted, Power Cream Puffs and
Flambe Chardonnay Crepes)
Anyway, down went the recipe
book and on went the thinking cap.
The SANFL is grassroots footy so
my first thought was that we need
to bring back the physicality of the
first bounce. Remember when you
would watch the start of any footy
telecast – any match at all –
because the first bounce always
led to a bit of testosterone-fuelled
push and shove
Bring it back I say. So first new
rule: no-one can be reported in the
first 30 seconds of any game. Next,
the dropkick goal would be worth
nine points. Doesn’t have to be
outside the 50, it just has to be a
droppie. Tell me people wouldn’t
flock to see that! And perhaps a
bonus point if the kicker is wearing
a pair of ‘Capper’ shorts.
New stats please
I believe there should be a new
stat added to the game: mistakes!
We look at the positive stats but
the negative stuff is possibly more
important. With a lot of teams
playing their first game last
weekend there were tired legs,
cramps and a hell of a lot of
mistakes late in each quarter.
I’m not suggesting a Shame File.
Let’s just get a balance. Mistakes
are costly.
I guarantee you that within five
years from now, this stat will be a
common occurrence.
While I am on it, I heard a
suggestion that if we could find a
way to get players match fit for

Round One, it would be worth solid
gold. Imagine that! It would be like
Cliff Young, who ran through the
night when the others slept - a
game changer.
It would be worth being over-ripe
in Round One, deliberately ease
back in the mid-season and then
come back strong for the Finals.

Just under 12 months ago, West
Adelaide coach Andy Collins was
on top of the world.
The Bloods were enjoying their
best start to a season since 2004 –
coincidentally the year of their
most recent Finals appearance –
with three straight wins to kick
things off. By May, they were sitting
on top of the ladder with a 5-1
record.
Those with a keen eye for history,
symmetry and moon alignments
would have noted with interest it
was among West’s best season
starts since 1911, a year the Bloods
won the SANFL flag and downed
Essendon to be crowned
Champions of Australia.
With the introduction of the Foxtel
Cup last season, some West fans
were dreaming of pulling off a
similar double, exactly a century
later.
Within two months, the Bloods
plummeted out of the top five and
before long crashed out of
contention, ultimately finishing
seventh with a below-par 8-12
mark.
“It sounds like an excuse but we
were ridiculously hit with the most
freakish of all freakish injuries last
year,” Collins said. “We think we’re
in pretty good nick this season.”
The 46 year old is in his fifth year
at the helm at West, a tenure
bettered only by Neil Kerley across
three stints (eight seasons) and
matched only by Fos Williams
(1974-1978) and Mick Taylor (1996-
2000) in terms of most consecutive
years as head coach in the club’s
history.
The rub is that Collins, a threetime
VFL/AFL premiership player
with Hawthorn, is the only member
of that group of long-serving
Bloods coaches to have not led the
club to a Finals berth.
Collins, who also coached Box Hill
and Coburg in the VFL, inherited a

“I think so,” he said. “It’s coming
into my fifth year and we’ve shown
progressive improvement.
“If we don’t win more games than
we lose, that will be disappointing
from a personal perspective.
“I think we’ve recruited well and
our younger players are a year
older and we reckon we have a lot
more depth to cover those
scenarios that occurred last year.
“Last season our statistics
indicated that when we got beaten,
we got beaten in the midfield.”
“Our forward line and our midfield
will have greater versatility
because of (the recruits). Our
group is looking a lot stronger this
year.”

2012 FOXTEL CUP
Port Adelaide becomes the first SANFL club to
compete in the 2012 Foxtel Cup this weekend,
taking on Subiaco at AAMI Stadium on April 7.
If Port wins, it will progress into the Quarter-Finals to
play Morningside on June 2. Port made the Semi-Finals
of last year’s inaugural Foxtel Cup competition.
This year, West Adelaide and South Adelaide also step
up for the knockout competition between State League
clubs from Victoria, South Australia, Queensland,
NSW/ACT, Tasmania, Western Australia and the
Northern Territory.
West will travel to Perth for the April 28 clash
against Claremont, while South Adelaide will get the
chance to play at the MCG on May 12 when it meets
Williamstown.

MILAN, PARIS AND LONDON CALLING FOR
SA’S BEST
Six South Australians have touched down in Europe as
part of a two-week AFL/AIS Academy development
camp exposing young footballers to elite international
sports training methods.
Glenelg’s Ben Kennedy, Sturt’s Brodie Grundy, South’s
Emmanuel Irra, North’s Sam Mayes, Central’s Troy Menzel
and Eagles’ Jimmy Toumpas were all selected last year to
take part in the AIS/AFL U18s Academy Squad.
Led by High Performance coach Michael O’Loughlin,
they are among 30 of the country’s best young players
who will tour Italy, England and France over 13 days.
The squad’s first pitstop is Milan where players will gain
an insight into the High Performance initiatives of the AC
Milan Football Club. The squad will also train at the
Australian Sports Commission facilities in Varese.
The group will then travel to Surrey, where it will take
part in an Australia v European Legion game before
competing in an Australia v European Titans game in
Paris.
