The first was held at the Newark and Nott's Showground, over an Easter weekend – and the rest, they say, is history.” As we all know, since then the event has grown to become the largest attended commercial vehicle show in Europe, with events taking place this year at Peterborough, Shepton Mallet in the West of England, Edinburgh and in celebration of the 30th anniversary year, a return to Newark. So how did the idea of Truckfest Ireland come about Says Bob: “I found myself sitting next to 4Square Media's Helen Beggs at an industry event and after chatting for around two hours I was almost – almost - convinced that we ought to bring Truckfest to Ireland. “Subsequently, both I and some of our team went across to assess the viability of Truckfest Ireland. Truckfest Ireland will take place at the Kings Hall, Belfast on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th August. “Over the years we have welcomed so many visitors to Truckfest from both north and south of the border in Ireland that we think it's about time we paid them the compliment and gave Ireland's industry a Truckfest of their very own,” says Bob Limming, a Director with Live Promotions Events Ltd who have been organising the hugely successful Truckfests, specifically in Peterborough, for the past 30 years. “There will be all of the elements contained in Truckfest Ireland that you would expect -manufacturers and distributor stands, industry showcases and the usual fun elements, celebrities, main arena action, and the most important of all, competing trucks. “Such is the interest in Truckfest that even during the difficult times that everyone is experiencing at the moment this year at our Peterborough Truckfest we saw an all time record of 1,428 competing trucks,” adds Bob. “We look forward to Truckfest Ireland being an annual event, to working closely with Export & Freight and to giving our competitors an opportunity to make a trip to Belfast and compete with the best in the country.” As with many things in life, Truckfest started out by accident. Live Promotions had been a marketing services company, founded by Colin Ward. When Bob Limming joined the company 33 years ago, it was involved mainly in product sampling and launches, and concept evenings for breweries. It was also were engaged with the JPS Lotus team providing thirteen road show units to visit large capacity venues in the UK. It was at that point the business direction changed. “In 1981 we were contacted by Leyland Group who were about to re-brand the company, changing the name to Austin Rover,” explains Bob. “We were asked to put on a large event at Donington Park Race Circuit with free admission for the public, bring the whole of their distributor network together, and seat and feed five thousand distributors per day in a huge marquee village, provide all the entertainments, with track demonstrations, celebrities and organise a test ride programme for up to fifty Austin Rover vehicles per day, incorporating all of their range which at the time started at Mini, included Metro, right the way up to the Jaguar. “We realised quickly that whilst this was a great contract, and a prestigious opportunity it was only going to happen one time and with the breweries starting to spend less on marketing we decided that we needed an event of our own to develop. “Truckfest came about by a chance conversation that Colin had with his brother, a driver, who was talking about how 18 Truckfest 1pg.indd 18 24/05/2011 12:06
