wheels on the rear axle also
greatly contributed to traction.
Driving was a pleasure, thanks
in no small measure to the
smooth 6-speed transmission,
and with disc brakes all round,
we were always in control.
Handling was further enhanced
by its excellent turning circle,
said to be one of the best
available – you could, as they
say, turn it on a sixpence -
making it ideal for town and
city centre deliveries and
collections when manoeuvring
can be challenging at
the best of times.
We can see why the Fuso
Canter is particularly appealing
to the distribution sector as
its low frame makes loading
and unloading especially
easy – and, incidentally, this
particular Canter is available in
three wheelbase options from
2,750 to 3,850mm and two cab
options, a generous standard
three person cab and a crew
cab which can seat up to seven
people, all of which illustrates
its excellent flexibility.
Running Costs
We didn’t actually do a
measured fuel consumption
test, but we have been assured
the Canter is extremely
economical to run and we have
no reason to question that.
With operators keeping their
trucks for longer, there is
more focus on servicing and
maintenance issues, and here
again the Fuso Canter scores
well. All Euro 5 Canters come
with a 3-year / 100,000km
warranty and boasts generous
service intervals of 30,000km.
Verdict
We have driven quite a few
light commercial trucks in our
time, and in our opinion the
Canter ranks way up there
with the best of them, with
its quiet engine, smooth
gearbox, excellent all round
visibility and great turning
circle that makes it nimble to
handle in narrow streets.
But you don’t have to take our
word for it; go grab yourself
a test drive if you are looking
for a compact truck that scores
highly in the areas of economy,
comfort and performance.
