COMMENT
Economic recovery is definitely pushing its way through, but very
slowly, and while some sectors of the industry are clearly doing better
than others, the general consensus of opinion is that there is still a long
way to go.
Certainly, the Banks and some other financial institutions could be
doing more to help things along; in fact, they could learn a lot from
the various financial arms of our leading truck manufacturers who
have been taking a more realistic and open approach to lending. As
you’ll read in this issue, they are increasingly lending to transport and
logistics operators who desperately need to expand or renew their fleets. One truck finance
company told us, “we are happy to work with our customers in both good and bad times,”
while another added, “we completely understand there is a need for us to facilitate as many
sales as possible.” Customers have long memories. Banks take note!
In this issue, too, we are delighted to report that the highly popular Truckfest is coming to
Belfast in 2012, with Export & Freight having been appointed Media Partners. We have an
interview with the organisers.
We’ve also been ‘face to face’ with the Continental Tyre Group’s top sales and marketing
people, as well as with MAN’s Chief Executive Officer and their new Regional Head Northern
& Southern Europe. As you’ll read, there are a lot of positives in both interviews.
This month, our test drivers have been out and about in both light and heavy duty trucks
- a compact high standard specification Mitsubishi Fuso 6.5 tonne Canter and a rugged
32-tonne Volvo FMX-380 8x4 tipper. We also take a closer look at Scania’s new Euro 6
engines, as well as report on who was doing what at the Commercial Vehicle Show in
Birmingham.
