local news Careers in Transport – Join Us, says Skills for Logistics The essential nature of passenger transport and logistics, and the exciting and rewarding career opportunities that these sectors can offer, were the key themes of an initiative designed for school careers officers, employers, Government representatives and industry groups, held recently at Belfast Harbour. The units are designed to stimulate interest, help inform career choice and build basic skills and knowledge prior to students leaving school. They also contribute to the achievement of a recognised qualification likely to be of considerable value in the progression of an individual’s career path. SfL Skills Director John Bowman said: “It is astonishing that, despite the essential nature of passenger transport, and the fact that the logistics industry sustains the daily life of the entire population, school leavers and job movers so frequently fail to appreciate, and take advantage of, the exciting opportunities which a career in transport can offer. “The purpose of initiatives like this is to to provide increased information to those advising job seekers and to increase awareness of the size, scope and rewards that are involved in a transport career.’” Speakers included Edward Getty from CCEA who offered the awarding body perspective. He Event partners Geraldine Quinn (Skills for Logistics), Dr Jonathan Seymour (University of Ulster), Edward Getty (CCEA) and Richard Wheater (Go Skills) The programme was organised by the sector skills council for the freight logistics industry, Skills for Logistics (SfL) and some 60 delegates attended. Presentations at the event highlighted Occupational Study Units which have been designed to develop the interest, awareness and appreciation of 14 to 19 year olds in passenger transport and logistics in four areas. • What is logistics and passenger transport – careers and roles • The movement of people and freight - operational aspects • Planning a journey – effective and efficient route planning • Developing and managing road infrastructure and road users. Event delegates at Belfast Harbour Commissioner’s Barnett Room Event speakers Nick McCullough (DFDS / Sainsbury’s), Mal McGreevy (Translink), Dr Jonathan Seymour (University of Ulster) and Edward Getty (CCEA) are joined by John Bowman (Skills for Logistics) and Vicki Ball (Go Skills) spoke about how Occupational Studies would fill a gap in the market, with practical subjects that would give young people a taste of what they can expect when they leave school. Nick McCullough from DFDS/ Sainsbury’s, meanwhile, provided an insight into the logistics industry, while Mal McGreevy from Translink presented an overview into the passenger transport sector. Another speaker, Dr Jonathan Seymour from the University of Ulster, outlined the benefits of the Occupational Studies which, he said, among other things, would help young people appreciate the vast range of job opportunities within the transport and logistics sectors; he then went on to highlight what steps had to be followed by those wishing to become involved. 44 Skills for Logistics 1pg.indd 44 24/05/2011 14:16
