At the conclusion of full-time, there will be a five-minute break; The teams will then change ends from the previous quarter and play five minutes, plus time on, at the 

conclusion of which, there will be a further three-minute break; At the conclusion of the three-minute break, the teams will again change ends and play for a further five

Although Norwood has 

played in 34 First Semi 

Finals and Sturt 18, the teams 

have only clashed three times, 

in 1935, 1965 and 1976, with 

Sturt winning on each occasion. 

The most recent clashes 

between the clubs were the 

2002 Qualifying and 

Preliminary Finals, which 

Sturt won on the way to its 

most recent premiership. 

Norwood’s Elimination Final 

victory over the Blues in 1999 

was the Redlegs’ most recent 

finals triumph over their 

neighbours. 

In 1978, Norwood and Sturt 

played in one of the all-time 

great Grand Finals, when the 

Redlegs came back from a 

29-point deficit at the final 

break to beat the Blues by a 

single point. 

Sturt’s most recent First Semi 

Final was in 2004, when it 

beat North Adelaide by 58 

points, while Norwood got 

up a thriller over the Eagles 

in 2002, their most recent 

appearance. 

North’s 23.14 (152) against 

South’s 14.12 (96) in 1990 is 

the highest score in a First 

Semi Final. While the biggest 

margin is 83 points, when 

Norwood defeated the 

Panthers in 1981. 

Twice since 1931 – when the

began and through to the 

current final five format – a First 

Semi-Final has been drawn. 

The drawn games were in 

1933 between North and 

Norwood, and 1969 between 

Torrens and West, with the 

Redlegs and the Bloods 

winning the replays. 

In 76 First Semi Finals since 

1931, 35 victors have gone on 

to make the Grand Final, with 

eight winning the premiership 

– Sturt (1932 and 1976), Port 

(1958 and 1998), North 

(1931), West Torrens (1945), 

West Adelaide (1947) and 

Norwood (1984).

Brett James in the back pocket and rover Stephen Rowe stood out 

for the Redlegs, while for Glenelg, Stewart McCully played almost a 

lone hand in ruck, collecting 43 of the Tigers’ 46 hit outs. 

TEN YEARS AGO 

1998 – Port Adelaide 22-13 (145) d Norwood 10-9 (69). 

With 12 goals from Bryan Beinke (7.4) and Alf Steed (5.0), Port 

Adelaide defeated Norwood by exactly the margin the pair kicked, 

76 points. The Magpies only led by 18 points at the first break, but 

the further the game went, the bigger the lead became. 

Usually a defender, Beinke was a revelation at half forward, 

taking 13 marks and proving impossible to contain. Best for 

Norwood was half back Troy Clements, who cut Peter Burgoyne 

out of the game.

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO 

1993 – Norwood 9-15 (69) d Glenelg 9-5 (59). 

With 15 scoring shots to two, Norwood turned around a half time 

deficit of 13 points to beat Glenelg in the 1993 First Semi Final – 

although 11 of those shots were minor scores. The Tigers only 

kicked a single goal in each of the final two quarters. 

Norwood coach Neil Craig said after the game, “The important

While Glenelg and Central 

District have never met 

in a Second Semi Final, they 

have played off in three finals. 

The clubs clashed in the 1982 

Elimination Final, the 1984 

Qualifying Final and the 1988 

First Semi Final, with the Tigers 

winning on each occasion. 

In Second Semi Finals, the 

Bulldogs have dominated 

recently, winning the past eight 

since 2000 with a 9-2 overall 

record that places them equal 

third in total wins behind 

Port’s 26 and Sturt’s 11. 

This millennium, Central has 

beaten the Eagles four times, 

as well as Sturt, West, Port and 

North in Second Semi-Finals. 

Glenelg’s most recent win 

was in 1990, when it beat the 

Magpies by 11 points before 

going down in the premiership 

decider to Port. 

The Tigers have been in 12 

Second Semi Finals for four 

victories, with 10 of those 

clashes between 1969 and 

1990. 

Glenelg’s biggest drought 

between appearances was 19 

seasons, from 1950 to 1969, 

with today’s game ending the 

current run of 18 years. 

Port Adelaide’s 24.20 (164) is 

the highest score in a Second 

Semi Final, when it defeated 

Sturt 15-11 (101) in 1980. 

The biggest margin is 74 

points, established when West 

beat Norwood in 1983. 

A decade later the Eagles 

equalled that margin against 

Port Adelaide in 1993. 

The very first Second Semi 

Final in 1931 resulted in a 

one-point victory for the 

Blues over Port, while two 

other games have also been 

decided by the smallest of 

margins, with the Magpies 

defeating South in 1964 and 

Sturt in 1966. 

Nine other games have been 

decided by less than a goal, 

the most recent in 2004 when 

Central beat the Eagles by 

two points. 

From 74 Second Semi Finals, 

47 victors have backed up by 

winning the Grand Final, while 

18 losers have rebounded to 

reverse the result. 

Paul Chapman led the Eagles from the front, with his tenacious 

ball-getting and ruthless tackling, and was backed by a tough-asnails 

defence, marshalled by Andrew Rogers. The Magpies had few 

winners, and at the final break had only two goals on the board. 

TEN YEARS AGO 

1998 – Sturt 15-8 (98) d West Adelaide 11-13 (79). 

A magnificent 15-minute burst of scintillating football in the 

third term proved the major difference in Sturt’s 19-point victory 

over West Adelaide in the 1998 Second Semi Final. 

With on-ballers Tim Weatherald, Jarrod Twitt, Merv Kartinyeri, 

Bruce Lennon and Brodie Atkinson completely dominating, the 

Blues scored 6-1 to nothing in the second half of the third quarter. 

Twitt nailed three majors as the Blues went from trailing by three 

points to hold on for a 34 point advantage at the final change. 

Mark Power was the Bloods’ best, while Tony Modra failed to 

take a mark and only kicked two points, although he left the 

field with a sore back.

“It was a culmination of 

things,” McGlone said. “With 

my work and uni situated in 

the city, it’s (Unley) closer. 

“The chance to play more 

finals came into it as well, but it 

was more that I felt like I needed 

a change of environment. 

“Rick (Macgowan, coach) 

approached me along with 

Duane Massey (football 

operations manager) and I was 

impressed with Sturt’s culture. 

“South looked after me well 

and I’ve still got a lot of good 

mates there.” 

McGlone’s role in the Blues’ 

outfit has increased and his 

output has blossomed 

accordingly. 

“I’ve spent the majority of 

the time down back, but 

years on the Swans’ rookie list 

and then half a season on 

their senior list, although he 

never played an AFL game. 

“I spent most of my time in 

the first year at Port 

Melbourne, then in the 

Canberra League after that,” 

McGlone said. 

“Leaving a small country 

town and moving to Sydney 

was a big change and it 

opened my eyes up a bit. 

Life is hectic for McGlone 

right now. He is employed fulltime 

as a commercial 

assistant valuer at Savills and 

is due to graduate from 

university in November. 

Despite the Qualifying Final 

loss to Central, McGlone 

remained confident Sturt 

could go all the way. 

“We’ve had confidence in 

ourselves all year and we 

know that if we get into a 

winning position, we’re a good 

chance,” McGlone said. 

“The position of the footy 

club in League, Reserves, 

Under-19s and Under-17s is 

very strong, which holds the 

club in good stead for the 

years to come.”

year’s Star Players of the 

Year and R.O. Shearman 

Medallists. 

Sheedy and Allan finished 

the season tied on 37 votes 

after the three Mystery Round 

votes were tallied last week. 

It is the second consecutive 

year Allan has won the R.O. 

Shearman Medal. 

Judged by members of the 

SANFL’s 200 Club on a 5-4-3- 

2-1 basis for every minor 

round match, the award 

carries with it a $3000 first 

prize. 

Sheedy and Allan were 

formally presented their joint 

R.O. Shearman Medals at the 

Magarey Medal presentation 

last Thursday.

wins Coca-Cola Star 

Search Award 

South Adelaide’s James 

Boyd has beaten a 

remarkable field of young 

talent to take out this year’s 

Coca Cola Star Search award. 

The 19-year-old rover has 

played every League game 

this season and has impressed 

supporters and Star Search 

selectors alike with his 

tenacity and on-field skills. 

The second-year apprentice 

carpenter rated the Anzac Day 

game and his match-up 

against his football idol – 

Central’s James Gowans - as 

highlights of his 2008 season.

Port CEO Matthew Richardson last week paid tribute to Quinn, 

saying he would be remembered for “his courage, determination 

and leadership of men in life as much as on the football field”. 

FANS FLOCK TO FOOTY FINALS 

Sunday’s thrilling SANFL double-header drew the biggest 

crowd for an Elimination and Qualifying Final since 1996. 

In a massive start to the SANFL ‘be active’ Final Series, a 

recorded 15,825 supporters flocked to Adelaide Oval to watch 

the first week of Finals footy. 

The crowd numbers were the best at an SANFL Elimination 

and Qualifying Final in 12 years.

Bob Quinn 

BOB QUINN 1915-2008 

Port Adelaide dual Magarey Medallist Bob Quinn died last 

week, aged 93. 

One of Port’s greatest ever players, Quinn began his playing 

career with Port in 1933. 

Initially known only as the son of Jack Quinn (who captained 

the Magpies in 1904 and 1905), Quinn quickly cemented his 

own reputation at the club as a legendary rover and 

consummate club man. 

He narrowly missed winning the Magarey in 1937 and decided 

to eschew the fanfare the year after by listening to the count on 

radio in a Birkenhead butcher shop. 

He won that year and later confessed, “Everybody was telling 

me I was a ‘cert’ but I had a feeling I wouldn’t get the Medal.” 

Teammate Bob McLean described Quinn in 1970 as “the finest 

exponent of Australian football I have ever seen”. 

Like many players of his time, Quinn’s football career was 

interrupted by his war service. 

As one of the famed Rats of Tobruk, he suffered five leg 

wounds and facial injuries during an attack on a German 

stronghold. Only he and two other Rats survived the attack. 

His bravery was later acknowledged with the Military Medal in 1941. 

Quinn insisted on returning to active duty in New Guinea after 

recovering from his injuries and there, he was again wounded 

in action. 

Of the war, Quinn wrote to his family: “Like a football lecture on 

a blackboard, everything is quite easy until the other team runs 

on to the field.” 

In his later life, he spoke little of his war experiences but 

his injuries continued to plague him throughout the rest of his 

playing career. 

Despite that, he went on to win a second Magarey Medal in 

1945, a total of four club best-and-fairest awards and was state 

captain-coach in 1945-1947. 

He was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 1996. 

Quinn’s son, Greg, related the following to Independent Weekly 

journalist Ashley Porter earlier this year: “For all of Dad’s rough 

and tough stuff on the football field, and what he did in war, he 

has been such a compassionate man. 

“His friendship with people has always been paramount. He 

taught me that you can’t have enough friends or mates.

studying civil engineering at Adelaide University. I’m also not

Brant Chambers because he’s so dangerous up forward and 

Michael Coad because he’s a freak. He does stuff out of 

nowhere.
