Native to Mexico and Central America,
dahlias provide us with more pleasure than almost
any other summer bulbs. They produce an abundance
of wonderful flowers perfect for ‘gift giving flower
arrangements’ throughout early summer and again
in late summer until frost. If they are picked for arrangements,
these ‘cut and come again’ plants require
almost no care, they appear to be pest resistant and
they come in a myriad of colors. They are happiest in
full sun but will tolerate partial shade. Top-sized tubers;
approx. 1 per sq. ft; whz 8-10; have overwintered
in our whz 7 gardens with extra winter mulch among
our daffodils and tulips; we divided them into groups
according to their shape; top sized tubers.
Group 1– Single-flowered
Single blooms with a single outer ring of florets
which may overlap, the center forming a disc.
Normally about 1’-2’ tall; ideal for fronts of borders
and in containers.
R e d R i d i n g H o o d
(Roodkapje) – blooms all
summer in our entrance
garden and greets us
many times a day; perfect
shoes and socks for Canna
‘Australia’.
whz = Winter Hardiness Zone
Roxy – lilac rose with
bright yellow stamens and
and an amazing ‘shadow’
in our full-sun garden.
Group 2 - Anemone Flowered
Blooms have one or more outer rings of generally
flattened ray florets surrounding a dense group
of tubular florets, which are longer than the disc
florets in Single dahlias, and showing no disc.
Normally about 1’-2’ tall.
Honey – a row of overlapping
antique rose petals
surround a center tuft of
golden tubular petaloids
on this anemone flowered
beauty; a combination
of these two colors
give the effect of warm,
sweet, yummy honey in
the garden; medium green
leaves; wonderful with
Lilium ‘Tom Pouce’; 12”-18”.
