Bulb Companions: Amarcrinum; as a carpet under large
bulbs in the garden or in containers gardens
Other Companions: Japanese Painted Fern; Hosta; Bleeding
Heart; Artemisia
These non-invasive natives of South Africa
and South America produce mostly 5 petaled flowers
on 3, sometimes 4 leafed plants that make wonderful
mounds in our garden from June-October. They’re
particularly wonderful in partial shade, but don’t
seem fussy about being in full sun even during our
hot, humid summers. They also are effective ‘shoes
and socks’ plants with larger bulbs and perennials in
the garden, in patio planters and around the edges
of houseplants; foolproof plants that seem to be pest
resistant, too! Blooms early summer to frost; 10 per
sq. ft.; whz 7-10. Top-sized 4-6cm bulbs and tubers.

Oxalis regnellii ‘Fanny’
Oxalis seem to be happy in either sun or shade in our
area, although they produce more flowers when given
more sunlight. But it’s the beautiful leaves that they’re
known for, so this is a terrific plant for full shade! To
the right, Oxalis ‘Iron Cross’ flowers create a ‘color
echo’ with the Caladium ‘Florida Sweetheart’.
