The Forest Engineering<br />

is recognized for excellence in student<br />

education, creative problem-solving<br />

research, and innovative extended<br />

education. Faculty engineers, hydrologists,<br />

and forest scientists apply<br />

engineering and forestry principles to<br />

solve complex forestry problems and<br />

support sustainable forests. Faculty<br />

and graduates provide knowledge,<br />

methods, and skills to design and<br />

carry out safe, economically viable,<br />

environmentally responsible, and<br />

socially acceptable forest resource<br />

operations.The mission <strong>of</strong> the Forest<br />

Engineering Department is to develop<br />

scientific, engineering, and technical<br />

solutions that promote sustainable<br />

management <strong>of</strong> forest, land, and water<br />

resources to meet society’s economic,<br />

environmental, and social needs.<br />

goals:<br />

n For undergraduates: provide (1)<br />

engineering and operations management<br />

education programs with<br />

a forestry context, (2) a broad<br />

education that supports pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

growth, (3) the practical skills to<br />

add immediate value to employers,<br />

and (4) a pathway to pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

licensing as engineers and land<br />

surveyors<br />

n For graduate students: provide<br />

education concentrations in forest<br />

engineering, forest operations,<br />

forest soils, and forest hydrology<br />

to educate future generations <strong>of</strong><br />

scholars, scientists, and pr<strong>of</strong>essionals.<br />

Graduate students serve as a<br />

foundation for the department’s<br />

research program.<br />

n Promote a research program that is<br />

mission-oriented and seeks to help<br />

solve land management problems<br />

by discovering new scientific<br />

knowledge, applying scientific<br />

principles to solve problems, and<br />

developing innovative decision<br />

support tools<br />

n Provide outreach activities that serve<br />

society through Extension and continuing<br />

education programs<br />

n Serve diverse clientele and provide<br />

lifelong learning opportunities for<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essionals, landowners, the public,<br />

and policy makers<br />

accomplishments:<br />

n The Forest Engineering and Forest<br />

Engineering/Civil Engineering<br />

curricula were revised for better<br />

alignment with other engineering<br />

programs and to improve preparation<br />

for the workplace.<br />

n The department received a pledge<br />

for more than $3.5 million from<br />

Richard Strachan to establish a new<br />

endowed chair in Forest Operations<br />

Management.<br />

n Undergraduate enrollment increased<br />

to 82 students in AY 2006.<br />

Seven graduates completed undergraduate<br />

degrees in June 2006 and<br />

found abundant job opportunities.<br />

The department met its goal <strong>of</strong> 5%<br />

enrollment for underrepresented<br />

students.<br />

n Graduate enrollment increased by<br />

almost 30% in AY 2006, to 30. Six<br />

graduate students completed programs.<br />

Students who sought jobs<br />

were employed by consulting firms,<br />

state and federal agencies, and, for<br />

Ph.D.’s, in academia.<br />
