Welcome to ResNet 2008! Dear ResNetters, On behalf of the 2008 Resnet Symposium Host Committee, we would like to welcome you to the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, and for many of you, to Canada. It is with great pride and enthusiasm that we decided a few years ago to bid to invite ResNet to Canada for the first time; the time is now here to host our fellow ResNetters on our historic campus and we hope you enjoy your visit! We have had great support from the University, the city of Fredericton, our host committee, the steering committee, the program committee, and of course our vendors, in order to plan a fantastic Symposium for all of you. Starting with excellent Professional Development Seminars, we’ve also lined up special events to entertain you, an engaging keynote and excellent program sessions to inform and encourage you, and lots of delicious food to keep you fueled! We’ve maintained many ResNet traditions, added a few of our own twists, and had lots of fun (and challenges!) planning to make this the best ResNet ever, eh While you’re here, we hope that you will take advantage of the opportunity to learn from one another through the sessions, BOFs, and information conversations that will take place over meals, in the snack room, or at the special events. We also hope you will experience the hospitality, culture and heritage of our University, city and province. UNB is the oldest public university in North America and home to the first faculty of Computer Science in Canada; Fredericton is the birthplace of the Canadian military and was named one of the Top 7 Smart Cities by the Intelligent Communities Forum in New York in 2008; and New Brunswick is home to a rich Acadian heritage and is a world-leader in the knowledge and energy industries. There is so much to see and do while you are here and our friends with Fredericton Tourism will be on-site to help you learn more about our community. They have also provided lots of tourism literature for you in case you miss them at registration. In closing, we sincerely thank you for joining us for the 2008 ResNet Symposium. Letter from the Chair Dear ResNetters, On behalf of the ResNet Steering Committee, it is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to the 15th annual ResNet Symposium. The ResNet community continues to be a creative, resourceful, and vital force because of each of you. Therefore, we are excited to have you with us, whether you’re a ResNet “veteran” or “newbie” coming to the Symposium for the first time. In the days that follow, friendships and professional bonds will be forged and renewed. We are excited to have you with us, and look forward to the opportunity to maintain and strengthen our bonds long after the conference is over. This year marks several especially significant milestones for our organization: First, as you are no doubt aware, we’re truly living up to our international mission by holding the symposium in Canada for the first time. Second, we have made good on our commitment to take ResNet the organization to the next level of professionalism and service by seeking a not-for-profit corporation status in the United States. By the time you read this letter, we should be incorporated in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a not-for-profit corporation. As soon as the ink is dry on the paperwork, we will post the mission statement, corporate bylaws, and slate of officers on the ResNet wiki. That said, you may be asking yourself, “so... what does this really mean” Well, the vision as discussed in our Town Hall meeting last year was to afford our community the opportunity to become more inter-active, more relevant, provide more pathways to professional growth for members, and to increase the overall legal, financial, and professional viability of our organization. But in truth, the short answer is “it’s really up to you.” The larger ResNet community, I suppose as defined largely by members of the Listserv, has always been the strength of this organization. However, we are seeing an evolution and maturation of technology, and attendant evolutions in the campus organizations that support those technologies. For example, many ResNet organizations have rejoined their central computing or Help Desk counterparts as wired and wireless networks have become pervasive in residences. While every campus must still grapple with security, we no longer kick the tires with security policies and products in student residences while waiting to implement strategies that are “good enough” for the rest of campus. Security, like networking, is now a normal and pervasive part of the entire campus agenda. At the same time blogs, wikis, mashups, and social networking sites (you know the ones I mean!) have forever changed the landscape and lifestyle of today’s college student. Students bring to campus a plethora of new internet-enabled phones, PDAs, game consoles and other devices. They’re using Moodle to do coursework, meanwhile keeping track of friends with Twitter, and posting both academic work and social calendars using Google apps. Student use of technology is evolving rapidly. The relevant question becomes: should we as an organization be evolving as well to keep pace not just with the new gadgets, but how hardware and software tools are changing student social behavior and enabling academic work as well ResNet 2008 @ University of New Brunswick
