June 21 st – 25 th 2008

Welcome to ResNet 2008!
Dear ResNetters,
On behalf of the 2008 Resnet Symposium Host Committee, we would like to welcome you to the University of
New Brunswick, Fredericton, and for many of you, to Canada. It is with great pride and enthusiasm that we
decided a few years ago to bid to invite ResNet to Canada for the first time; the time is now here to host our
fellow ResNetters on our historic campus and we hope you enjoy your visit!
We have had great support from the University, the city of Fredericton, our host committee, the steering
committee, the program committee, and of course our vendors, in order to plan a fantastic Symposium for all
of you. Starting with excellent Professional Development Seminars, we’ve also lined up special events to
entertain you, an engaging keynote and excellent program sessions to inform and encourage you, and lots of
delicious food to keep you fueled! We’ve maintained many ResNet traditions, added a few of our own twists,
and had lots of fun (and challenges!) planning to make this the best ResNet ever, eh
While you’re here, we hope that you will take advantage of the opportunity to learn from one another
through the sessions, BOFs, and information conversations that will take place over meals, in the snack room,
or at the special events. We also hope you will experience the hospitality, culture and heritage of our
University, city and province. UNB is the oldest public university in North America and home to the first
faculty of Computer Science in Canada; Fredericton is the birthplace of the Canadian military and was named
one of the Top 7 Smart Cities by the Intelligent Communities Forum in New York in 2008; and New Brunswick
is home to a rich Acadian heritage and is a world-leader in the knowledge and energy industries. There is so
much to see and do while you are here and our friends with Fredericton Tourism will be on-site to help you
learn more about our community. They have also provided lots of tourism literature for you in case you miss
them at registration.
In closing, we sincerely thank you for joining us for the 2008 ResNet Symposium. Please ask us if you have any
questions – anyone in a black ResNet T-shirt is part of the host or steering committee and will be happy to
help you. Enjoy ResNet 2008!
Letter from the Chair
Dear ResNetters,
On behalf of the ResNet Steering Committee, it is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to the 15th
annual ResNet Symposium. The ResNet community continues to be a creative, resourceful, and vital force
because of each of you. Therefore, we are excited to have you with us, whether you’re a ResNet “veteran” or
“newbie” coming to the Symposium for the first time. In the days that follow, friendships and professional
bonds will be forged and renewed. We are excited to have you with us, and look forward to the opportunity to
maintain and strengthen our bonds long after the conference is over.
This year marks several especially significant milestones for our organization: First, as you are no
doubt aware, we’re truly living up to our international mission by holding the symposium in Canada for the
first time.
Second, we have made good on our commitment to take ResNet the organization to the next level of
professionalism and service by seeking a not-for-profit corporation status in the United States. By the time you
read this letter, we should be incorporated in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a not-for-profit
corporation. As soon as the ink is dry on the paperwork, we will post the mission statement, corporate bylaws,
and slate of officers on the ResNet wiki.
That said, you may be asking yourself, “so... what does this really mean” Well, the vision as
discussed in our Town Hall meeting last year was to afford our community the opportunity to become more
inter-active, more relevant, provide more pathways to professional growth for members, and to increase the
overall legal, financial, and professional viability of our organization. But in truth, the short answer is “it’s
really up to you.”
The larger ResNet community, I suppose as defined largely by members of the Listserv, has always
been the strength of this organization. However, we are seeing an evolution and maturation of technology,
and attendant evolutions in the campus organizations that support those technologies. For example, many
ResNet organizations have rejoined their central computing or Help Desk counterparts as wired and wireless
networks have become pervasive in residences. While every campus must still grapple with security, we no
longer kick the tires with security policies and products in student residences while waiting to implement
strategies that are “good enough” for the rest of campus. Security, like networking, is now a normal and
pervasive part of the entire campus agenda.
At the same time blogs, wikis, mashups, and social networking sites (you know the ones I mean!)
have forever changed the landscape and lifestyle of today’s college student. Students bring to campus a
plethora of new internet-enabled phones, PDAs, game consoles and other devices. They’re using Moodle to do
coursework, meanwhile keeping track of friends with Twitter, and posting both academic work and social
calendars using Google apps. Student use of technology is evolving rapidly. The relevant question becomes:
should we as an organization be evolving as well to keep pace not just with the new gadgets, but how
hardware and software tools are changing student social behavior and enabling academic work as well
ResNet 2008 @ University of New Brunswick

Letter from the Chair
The answer, again, is “It’s up to you.” As our organization becomes more robust, more professional,
and seeks ways to remain relevant in a technologically evolutionary if not revolutionary time, it’s important to
take stock of where we are and where we want to go. To that end, I invite each of you to a lively “Town Hall”
style discussion to be held on Sunday, June 22 in Tilley 102 Auditorium. Bring your ideas, your thoughts, your
dreams....and let’s see where this will go!
Even if you choose not to attend the Town Hall meeting (though we hope you will), we encourage
you to make the most of your Symposium experience, and to continue to find ways to participate, either by
becoming an active member of our ResNet community, or by taking it up a notch and joining our Program
Committee or finding ways to get involved with the ResNet Applied Research Group or Steering Committee
when opportunities arise. And last, but not least, while you are busy adopting a few new “Canadianisms” into
your vocabulary, we hope that you will take the time to thank our hosts for making the 15 th annual ResNet an
absolutely unforgettable experience. Have a fantastic ResNet 2008!
With warmest regards, your ResNet Steering Committee:
MORNING SESSIONS: 9:00AM-12:00PM
PDS Session A: Passport to ResNet (Singer 351)
Are you new to the ResNet Symposium or just wann more info on this year's program and highlights This PDS session is for you. Led
by Lowell Furman and the Theme Guides from the Program Committee this session will explain each theme and highlight topics of
interest in each theme. Perfect for a newcomer or a not so newcomer looking for a heads up on the conference sessions.
PDS Session B: Team Builders and Ice Breakers (Singer 361)
Do your RCCs snore during training Do you worry that the glazed over look means that the dry information we have to cover is
putting your workers to sleep Does that new RCC over in the corner all by herself concern you Then this class is for you! This
session will focus on proven team building and icebreaker activities you can take back with you to liven up your training; wake up
your team and help build solid working relationships! Please dress comfortably and bring your sense of humour!
PDS Session C: You Might As Well Be Happy (Singer 151)
Ellen B. Gélinas, humorist, educator, and counselor, presents a lively and interactive look at the many ways we can increase our
laughter quotient. You are respectfully invited to learn how to overcome some of your own roadblocks to a balanced and fun-filled
life. You just might laugh at your own foibles, practice the power of “NO”, argue with the all too serious rules we hang on to. And
you could discover a short-cut to using“appropriate” humour and understanding our differences. Hopefully, you will dare to design a
bodacious “TO DO” list and leave with a smile on your face and a plan in your heart.
PDS Session D: DISC Profiles (Singer 161)
In a recent survey of 1000 human resource professionals, the ability to communicate and deal effectively with other people was
rated as the number one skill looked for in the hiring process. It was rated above technical skills, work experience and other
educational backgrounds.
This workshop is a powerful training event that is guaranteed to improve personal and work communications. The skill of
understanding people will increase business and personal communications, improve interpersonal relationships and create an
appreciation of the diversity of individual types. Each participant will learn how to work with people of different styles to insure
positive outcomes.
AFTERNOON SESSIONS: 1:00PM-4:00PM
PDS Session E: Giving Effective Presentations (Tilley 205)
Terry has been a Certified Trainer within the Junior Chamber organization for the past 5 years. He has delivered training to young
professionals ranging from Non-profit Organization Management to Effective Speaking and Communicating.
Delivering effective presentations can often be a difficult task, especially for those of us within the IT Industry. Terry will present
some useful information to not only help you develop effective visual aides, but also help you convey the information to your
audience, make the delivery easier, and leave a positive lasting impression.
PDS Session F: Campus Safety and Security in a Cyber World (Singer 361)
This session will be delivered in two parts.
Part A: Cyber Threats on Campus
The Internet has provided a powerful set of innovative tools and services that have transformed many aspects of early 21st century
life. This is particularly true in higher education but we must be aware that every new application of technology (social networking
for example) comes with a dark side. This part of the presentation will discuss the latest threats in cyber space and present some
effective legal, social and technical responses to cyber crime.
Professional Development Sessions
Part B: Emergency Messaging on Campus
Recent tragic events on campuses have led many post-secondary educational institutions in the United States and Canada to
introduce emergency messaging capabilities as a way of alerting campus communities about 'short fuse' emergency situations. This
presentation will provide an overview of the communications technologies being deployed, and discuss some of the human, policy,
legal and technical factors that ultimately influence the effectiveness of emergency messaging on university and college campuses.
PDS Session G: Balancing Act (Singer 151)
Life is all about RELATIONSHIPS.. relationships at home with loved ones, at work with colleagues and managers, at school with
teachers and fellow students, with relatives and friends and most importantly, with oneself. All these relationships are important to
our well being and survival. Not all of these relationships feel good! We have been brought up in a world where we have learned
that, “My way is THE way.....and you should join me in my way!!!” This is what causes so much conflict and stress and what
ultimately damages our relationships. We have become a culture of arguments, debates and score keepers. We really want to be
RIGHT..... Today’s workshop will present some food for thought and some strategies to help you both understand and be
understood, as well as some tools for putting laughter back in your life.
PDS Session H: Dealing with Difficult People (Singer 161)
Have you noticed that some people are and always will be difficult They can be disagreeable, abrasive, uncooperative,
unreasonable, volatile and totally uncommunicative. They can literally ruin your day in an instant. Their negative attitude and
behaviour results in lower productivity for themselves and their co-workers. Difficult people are also a major cause of employee
turnover and low morale within organizations. Knowing how to handle their frustrating and disruptive behaviour is one of the most
important skills you can have. This session will help you to develop and practice healthier responses to those who are making your
life miserable.
Professional Development Seminars (PDS) - The PDS consists of extended sessions (usually about 3 hours long) structured around a
specific topic. The format of these sessions provide for longer and more thorough discussions than the program sessions.
Presenters' Prep - The presenters' prep meeting provides important information and tips to those presenting at the ResNet
Symposium. Information about the presentation process specific to the ResNet Symposium will be covered, along with tips for a
successful presentation. It is crucial that all presenters attend the presenters' prep meeting so they can see the room where they will
be presenting and familiarize themselves with the specific technology in that room.
Birds of a Feather (BOF) Sessions - BOF sessions are small-groups who gather to discuss a pre-selected topic. Oftentimes these are
written into the schedule, but can also form at lunch or dinner tables. Be sure to check the program schedule to see if any appeal to
you. You may also create a BOF throughout the conference. You don’t need to sign up to attend BOF Sessions.
A link will be posted on the main website: http://resnetsymposium.org/resnet2008/
Opening Reception and Dinner - The opening reception provides time for you to meet and mingle with other conference attendees
and grab a snack or two before the opening dinner. The Newcomer's BOF is also hosted during this time. During the opening dinner
you'll learn more about the exciting things in store at the ResNet Symposium, and have the opportunity to meet and hear from
those responsible for putting on the Symposium.
Program Committee BOF - This BOF is for anyone interested in participating in next year's ResNet Program Committee. You'll have
the opportunity to hear the incoming Program Committee Chair speak about his or her ideas and share your own with the
committee. This event is a must for anyone interested in becoming more involved with the ResNet Symposium.
Keynote Presentation - What a better way to kick off the presentation section of the ResNet Symposium than have an IT
professional speak on a hot topic that affects all of our lives The keynote begins the first day of presentation sessions and is always
interesting and informative.
Breaks - The term "break" at ResNet is synonymous with one word: food. Breaks are scheduled times between presentation sessions
that allow time to have a snack, a restroom break, or to catch up with other ResNetters.
Presentation Sessions - The presentation sessions are the main event at the ResNet Symposium. Professionals from around the
world spend months compiling school-specific information to bring and speak about at ResNet. Attending presentation sessions
allows ResNet attendees to compare and contrast their own ideas and policies with those of other schools.
Documentation Fair - Do you have extra documentation sitting around your office Want to get rid of it without having to throw it
away Ship it or bring it to ResNet for the Documentation Fair! Attendees bring their best (and worst) fliers, stickies, mouse pads,
CDs, manuals, and videos to share with others. ResNetters also share URLs for online documentation, podcasts, movies, source code,
and other digital items they created. Leave some room in your suitcase to bring home some of the best ideas to implement in your
own schools.
ResNet Jeopardy - Hosted by Andrew Blaner from Barnard College, the annual ResNet Jeopardy is always a regular ResNet favorite.
Modeled after the popular game show, handpicked ResNet attendees match wits against each other (and against the audience!)
while answering questions about the ResNet program, notable ResNetters, and other fun ResNet trivia. Come and laugh with (or at,
if you prefer) this year's lucky Jeopardy contestants!
Geek Olympics - Think you can put together a Mac keyboard from a pile of keys Sound easy What if you were stuffed in a XXL shirt
with another ResNetter and forced to use only one hand Create a Geek Olympics team as you battle head to head with other teams
to win fun prizes and the ultimate prize: bragging rights. Last year's events included a photo scavenger hunt, Ethernet untangling
mayhem, T-shirt design contest, and a box-building relay! What new events will be in this year's Geek Olympics Form a team of
your closest ResNetters and bring it on!
Afternoon Activities - After 36 hours of presentations, BOFs, and panel discussions, you'll get your first extended break on Monday
afternoon to nap, explore Fredericton, or participate in one of the official afternoon activities. A whale watching trip to St. Andrews
by the Sea , kayaking the St. John River, a guided bicycle tour, a culture crawl in downtown Fredericton or just hang out with your
ResNet friends and enjoy a few hours of stress-free relaxation.
Vendor Fair - Meet the vendors that make ResNet possible! Get your grab bag and collect all the free pens, sticky pads, and other
fun stuff while leaving your business cards with the vendors to be eligible for the vendor prizes raffle. Talk to the vendors about their
products and maybe you will find something suitable for your school. Make sure you check out the scheduled vendor presentations
for an in-depth look at their valuable products and services. Please be sure to thank the vendors for sponsoring ResNet!
T-Shirt Exchange - Always a popular event, the annual T-Shirt Exchange is a chance for you to bring a shirt from your school and
swap it for one from a different school. All of the shirts are collected and organized, and each person who brings a shirt receives a
number used to determine the order of picking shirts.
Closing Reception and Dinner - The closing reception provides an opportunity to relax and mingle with your new and old ResNet
friends. The closing dinner will be at Officer Square in downtown Fredericton on Tuesday, June 24. Shuttle buses from campus to
downtown will be provided. Relax and cherish your last night at the ResNet Symposium!
Time: 11:30 - 12:30 PM
Presentation 1A: Thin Client Implementation
Presenter/Institution: Carol Jarom (University of Delaware) & Karl Vollmer (Oregon State University)
Format: Lecture
Theme: Future of ResNet
Technical level: 5
Location: Singer 161
Description: The Information Technologies-User Services department at the University of Delaware has replaced existing “fat”
Windows PCs with Sun Ray thin clients connecting to a Windows 2003 server running Terminal Services in two of their computing
sites. We have coined the term WinSun terminals for these stations. In addition, this technology is being used for express stations in
one of our busiest sites and in kiosk setups in our student centers. It has reduced staff support time, minimized security
vulnerabilities and reduced hardware costs. No hard drives means no more ghosting to keep these systems clean and up to date. I
will give an overview of our hardware and the software configuration we are using in this environment.
**********************************
Oregon State University uses the Linux Terminal Server Project (http://ltsp.org) to run web-enabled desktops in the dorm lobbies and dining halls.
Each box is running a network boot copy Linux that is pulled from our central server. They do not have a internal HDD. Updates are as simple as a
configuration change on the server. I will talk about how we implemented it, and why we chose Linux as well as some of the stumbling blocks we
hit when implementing the system.
Presentation 1B: Remote Support For Students
Presenter/Institution: Eric Rosenberg (Stony Brook University), Behzad Barzideh (Stony Brook University)
Format: Lecture
Theme: Cool Tools
Technical level: 3
Location: Singer 351
Description: Stony Brook University would like to present our remote support solution for students, Bomgar. Bomgar is a network
appliance with a built in web server that allows remote connections to any computer with an internet connection. We have setup a
URL to direct the students to the Bomgar box’s web server. They are prompted to install a small plugin. Once installed, the remote
support representative has full control of the user’s desktop. The support session may be ended at any time by either the user or the
rep. Once the session has ended, the remote client will uninstall itself from the remote computer. The remote client is compatible
with Windows 9x – Windows Vista, OSX 10.3 – OSX 10.5, Ubuntu, Redhat, Fedora & Suse. Bomgar has helped reduce the need for
dorm room visits and greatly improved response time. The appliance allows concurrent remote connections based on licenses. We
currently have 10 licenses and 40 technicians. The appliance in place is expandable up to 20 concurrent connections.
Presentation 1C: Creating and Maintaining a Walk-up Service Center
provide full service at our tech desk for student computers, which includes software and hardware diagnosis, and which regularly
requires re-imaging of the computer. The issue of what to do with many gigs of copyrighted material on student computers is a
thorny one. In order to better serve the student population, we have instituted a Back it up, Bucknell campaign. The purpose of this
campaign is to better prepare students for that day when their hard drive dies or their computer slows beyond the point of repair.
The drive has 2 main points: back up your academic documents on Bucknell's 600mb of server space and back up your photos, music
and movies on an external hard drive. The word is spread through bookmarks , radio interviews, print ads (student newspaper),
posters, YouTube, Bucknell's web page, portal, and ITS Blog
across the residences, libraries, and other public areas. We use Symantec Ghost to create full disk and partition images and to write
those images back out to disk on our machines. However, we don't generally use Ghost to transfer images across the network, and
we rely on a number of other management tools to reduce the frequency with which we perform full-partition or full-disk imaging.
This presentation will provide an overview of how we use PXE booting, local Ghosting, patching scripts, configuration files located on
network resources, SSH servers, Sysprep, and BITS to make our imaging model more flexible and efficient.
Description: As the Human Resource Coordinator for Student Technology Consulting at Indiana University my objective is to recruit,
hire, orient and professionally develop our 150 consultants and student supervisors. Our consultant pool is a melting pot of various
majors, backgrounds and skill levels which gives us an eclectic mix of customer service representatives with innovative ideas and
concepts. Two common issues we must all face are how to retain and motivate our employees. To help facilitate these challenging
tasks we provide instant feedback through our full disclosure performance evaluation system and our implementation of “Wow”
customer service through our adaptation of the “Fish Philosophy”. We do not hire to fire. We hire to develop. When turnover does
occur we approach it as an opportunity for another candidate to realize their potential. My presentation will detail our employee
evolution from the interview to their graduation and beyond. I will share my interview techniques, orientation program and how we
train our employees to Wow our customers!
Senti-Merriman Scholarship
Greetings
The Senti-Merriman Scholarship was created in 2001 to honor Sandy Senti and Jeff Merriman, the organization’s founding members.
Sandy and Jeff were the driving force behind the creation of the ResNet Symposium, and its early success was the result of their
commitment to residential technology and their shared respect for the contributions of those who make ResNet programs possible:
students living in residence and ResNet student staff. The ResNet Steering Committee is pleased that the ResNet Symposium
experience can be extended to student staff participants through this scholarship. This opportunity provides all member
organizations with a means to honor their student staff and demonstrates how important it is to have student participation in our
ResNet programs.
As the ResNet 2008 Senti-Merriman Scholarship Chair, it is my great honour to announce our scholarship recipient for this year:
Mr. Justin Luca from Stony Brook University.
In the words of his employers at Stony Brook, “Justin has proven himself to be a shining example of a student technician. He has
been extremely dependable and sets a great example for his peers.” This sums up the essence of a great ResNet Senti-Merriman
recipient and speaks to the value and importance of student staff at universities across the continent. Please take time to find
Justin during the conference to congratulate him on his accomplishment.
We hope that you will consider your own student staff members for the ResNet Senti-Merriman Scholarship in 2009. Read more
about the scholarship and our past recipients on the ResNet wiki:
http://resnetsymposium.org/wiki/index.php/Senti-Merriman_Scholarship
Best regards
Gayleen Gray
Chair, ResNet 2008 Senti-Merriman Scholarship
Justin has been working for Stony Brook University and Client Support since the beginning
of his junior year in fall of 2007. Justin will be going into his senior year at Stony Brook
University and pursuing a major in computer science. Justin works in the drop in center
repairing student computer and is responsible for making room visits after hours to work
on student computers out in the dorms. Always willing to take on new projects, Justin has
taken the initiative to help develop a Windows XP multi-boot reinstall DVD which contains
Windows XP Pro, Home & Media Center, drivers, current updates, antivirus and other
utilities.
Besides work and school Justin enjoys playing music with friends, whether it is drumming
or playing guitar. Also, Justin spends most of his summer out on his boat fishing or just
relaxing with family and friends on the Long Island Sound. He also likes to find new things
to do with old and new technology. For example, taking an old laptop and turning it into a
digital picture frame.
University of New Brunswick
UNB History
As the American Revolutionary War drew to a close, thousands of Loyalists gathered in New York City to await transportation to
homes in other British Colonies. Among these Loyalists were Charles Inglis, a former interim President of King's College, New York
(Columbia University); Benjamin Moore, later President of Columbia; and Jonathan Odell, minister, poet and pamphleteer. These
men were the visionaries of their day. In the midst of war, privation and exile, they drew up a plan for the future education of their
sons in the Nova Scotia wilderness. Recognizing that the new American nation would provide instruction only in revolutionary
"Principles contrary to the British Constitution" and that the cost of an overseas education would be prohibitive, they urged the
representatives of the British government to consider the "founding of a College . . . where Youth may receive a virtuous Education"
in such things as "Religion, Literature, Loyalty, & good Morals .
Initially, these gentlemen intended that the area of Nova Scotia have only one college. However, in 1784 when the Province of New
Brunswick was created from a part of Nova Scotia, New Brunswickers began a clamour for their own school which led to the
foundation of two of Canada's oldest institutions of higher learning - King's College, Windsor, Nova Scotia (now affiliated with
Dalhousie University) and the academy which became the University of New Brunswick.
UNB began with a petition presented to Governor Thomas Carleton on 13 December 1785. Headed by William Paine, the seven
memorialists asked Carleton to grant a charter of incorporation for an "academy or school of liberal arts and sciences," which they
maintained would result in many "public advantages and . . . conveniences." In addition, the "principal Officers of disbanded Corps
and other Inhabitants" in and around the provincial capital of Fredericton asked that the Governor reserve a substantial grant of
land in support of this academy.
Despite the approval of Carleton, it was many months before the academy opened. During this period a draft charter was written,
based on the 1754 Charter of King's College, New York, urging that the college never "exclude or restrain any Person . . . of any
religious Denomination, Sect, or Profession . . . from equal . . . Liberties, Privileges, [or] Degrees" - a very liberal notion in the
eighteenth century. Unfortunately, times were changing in New Brunswick and such sentiments seemed to recall the recent
American Revolution. Therefore, while the academy had commenced operation by the 1790s, it functioned less as a college and
more as a symbol of Carleton's governmental policy for the promotion of the twin tenets of the Anglican religion and the British
Constitution. As the provincial leaders of the opposition dismissed the academy as nothing but a "country school," Carleton realized
he must more actively and effectively offer it support. On 12 February 1800, over the signature of Provincial Secretary Jonathan
Odell, the College of New Brunswick received a Provincial Charter, the first college in Canada to be so honoured. It was intended that
the academy would serve as the College's preparatory school and that the two would be governed by a common College Council
drawn almost entirely from the ranks of a governmental hierarchy. As for the professors, they were all to be Anglicans.
For a number of years, the history of the future University continued to lie with the academy. A series of masters came and went
until 1811 when the Reverend James Somerville, an ex-patriate Scotsman, took the position of Principal Preceptor. There can be no
question that Somerville, a graduate of the University of Aberdeen, was a superb teacher who provided the Council and New
Brunswick with their first chance to have a real College. In 1820, Somerville was formally named President of the College of New
Brunswick and, in April 1822, he held the very first college classes in Fredericton. This development helped spur efforts to set the
institution on a firmer footing. A new Charter for "Brunswick College" was proposed in 1823, asking for permanent and substantial
funding directly from the King. Lieutenant Governor Sir Howard Douglas quickly threw his influence behind the scheme. Douglas
viewed the welfare of the College to be of prime importance to the success of New Brunswick. To this end, he pressed for a Royal
Charter and urged the erection of a fine stone building to house the institution.
Three designs for the building were submitted in 1825 to the Council, which selected that drawn by J.E. Woolford. There was, of
course, a good deal more involved in the transformation of the neglected College of New Brunswick into King's College, Fredericton.
Douglas spent the next four years keeping a wary eye on the growth of his "child." In 1826, having chosen the site for the building
himself, Douglas laid the cornerstone. In December 1827, largely through Douglas' efforts in Great Britain, King's College,
Fredericton, received a Royal Charter nearly identical to that granted to King's College, Toronto. Before allowing the new Charter to
take effect, the College of New Brunswick performed one final, official act, on 21 February 1828, by awarding degrees to its first and
last three graduates.
On 1 January 1829, King's College and the structure (now known as Sir Howard Douglas Hall, formerly referred to as the Old Arts
Building) erected to house it were officially opened. In one way, King's was a failure. In its thirty-year tenure it graduated fewer than
University of New Brunswick
125 students, in large measure because its classical curriculum was not well-suited to the needs of New Brunswickers. Yet, it was at
King's that many of the courses offered in later years by the University of New Brunswick had their start. In 1834, for example, three
of the professors proposed admitting "young men of good abilities and diligence" to a special, one- year course entitling each to a
teacher's certificate. Even after the creation of the Provincial Normal School this kind of university training continued sporadically
and in various forms until the Faculty of Education emerged in the twentieth century.
It was also in the 1830s that King's introduced "public lectures," more familiar to today's students as "extension courses." These
early lectures dealt with subjects such as geology, chemistry, physics and astronomy. Much to the disgust of one professor, James
Robb, some of his lectures at the College were open to the general public, including the young ladies of Fredericton. Some years
later, Mr. McMahon Cregan, an engineer from England who was brought to New Brunswick to conduct a survey for the European
and North American Railway, offered "instruction of a really practical and useful character" in the field of engineering to students
and non-students alike.
King's spent several tumultuous periods in conflict with members of the New Brunswick Legislature. Ostensibly, they were arguing
over the issues of curriculum and religion but the real issue was probably the cost of higher education. Fortunately, King's did have
defenders, in particular, the elegant debater William Needham who, in the face of threats to burn down the College or to turn it into
an agricultural school, made an impassioned speech that saved the institution from such ignominious fates. Through the efforts of
Needham, Lieutenant Governor Sir Edmund Head and a few others, the Legislature was persuaded to reform rather than destroy the
College. On 13 April 1859, the act creating the secular, provincial University of New Brunswick was passed.
At first, the UNB Charter seemed to promise more than the University could deliver but, slowly, under the guidance and tutelage of
several innovative professors, both the University's attitude and curriculum blossomed. In 1880, UNB began offering a certificate to
those women who performed well in entrance (matriculation) examinations, though ladies were not permitted to enrol at the
University. In 1885 a brilliant young girl named Mary Kingsley Tibbits met head-on the University's stricture against women and, in
1886, became UNB's first, regularly admitted, female student. The racial barrier had been broken earlier with the completely noncontroversial
entry of Arthur St. George Richardson, a black who came to UNB via Bermuda and Saint John. Gradually, the University
expanded its educational horizons. In 1887 the four-year program was introduced and in 1891 a Bachelor of Science degree was
added to complement the traditional BA. Just after the turn of the century, when Cecil Charles Jones took over as Chancellor of the
institution, whose title subsequently was changed to that of President, the foundations were laid for three major faculties: Law,
Engineering and Forestry.
The post-World War I era brought the first great expansion of the physical facilities of the campus. In 1920, UNB consisted of the Sir
Howard Douglas Hall (Old Arts Building), the Science Building, the small Observatory, a small gymnasium and the Dominion
Entomological Laboratory. By 1931, Memorial Hall, a modern Library and a Forestry and Geology Building had been added. The first
university residence was a gift from Lord Beaverbrook who, growing up in New Brunswick as William Maxwell Aitken, studied law,
and over the succeeding years developed an increasing interest in the welfare of the university. Other buildings brought into being
through his efforts and those of his family were the Lady Beaverbrook Gymnasium, Aitken House, Ludlow Hall, for the Faculty of
Law, and the Aitken Centre. In 1947, his Lordship became the University's Chancellor, to be succeeded by his son, Sir Max Aitken, in
1966 and in turn by Lady Violet Aitken, the wife of Sir Max, who served until 1993.
After World War II, returning veterans pushed registration to over 770 in 1946, almost double the number enrolled in 1941. With
this increased student population came a commensurate increase in faculty and course offerings, and a surge of building activity
from 1953 to 1977 that transformed the campus. The year 1964 brought three important developments: Teachers' College (the old
Provincial Normal School) was relocated on the campus, to become incorporated into an enlarged Faculty of Education in 1973; St.
Thomas University also relocated on campus, moving from Chatham and affiliating with UNB; and a second UNB campus was
established in Saint John.
UNB reached the end of its second century as a major provincial and national institution, offering a wide range of graduate and
undergraduate programs in administration, arts, computer science, education, engineering, forestry, law, nursing, physical education
and science: the University enters its third century proudly treasuring its past and eagerly facing the challenges of the future.
