THE MAIN OBJECTIVES
Vanamo (Linnea Borealis) -project is established
to support and improve the work
for sustainable development in Lahti Region.
The main objective is to increase the
implementation of sustainable development
by means of face-to-face customer
service, environmental education, citizens’
activities, ecopartnership, environmental
management and energy and material efficiency.
The purpose is to improve the
condition of the environment, and to
increase its importance in everyday
life.

VANAMO In a nutshell
The Vanamo-project is carried out
in three different sectors
• Ecopartnership and supporting
environmental know-how in
private businesses
• Environmental information, education
and activities, and activating
citizens to participate (customer
service, education and citizens’ activities)
• Development of environmental
management as well as material
and energy efficiency
Vanamo promotes sustainable development
in line with current themes.
The goal of the project is a
permanent information and activity
centre open for the audience.
The target groups of the project
are municipalities in Lahti Region,
kindergartens, schools and educational
establishments, organizations
and citizen groups (NGO´s), authorities,
citizens and private enterprises
as well as centres of enterprises.
Vanamo project is partly financed
by EU Regional Development Fund
through Häme Regional Environment
Centre and partly by the
project partners. The project partners
consist of six municipalities in
Lahti Region (Päijät-Häme Province)
and public companies partly owned
by Lahti City.

From environmental information service
the citizens get counselling face to face
and by phone. Diverse and up-to-date information
is available also in brochures.

CITIZENS’ ACTIVITIES
The residents in the region inform their
neighbourhood trustee of the environmental
matters in their surroundings.
The neighbourhood trustee delivers the
message to an official trustee.
The opinions of the residents are taken
into consideration in designing, decisionmaking
and implementation.
With the guidance of their neighbourhood
trustee, the residents work to make their
environment more healthy and comfortable,
or take part in the matters of their
neighbourhood in some other way.
ENVIRONMENTAL
EDUCATION
Environmental education is spreading environmental
attitudes, knowledge, skills and
capacity, thus strengthening environmental
awareness. Environmental school Ekoteko
organizes environmental education for
the young.
Awareness – Adds and clarifies conceptions of the
environment and our effect on it.
Attitudes – Help to clarify environment-related
feelings and values
Sensitivity – Helps to form a personal
relationship with the environment through
personal experience
Skills – Provide means and capacity to solve
environmental problems
Participation – Provides a possibility to actively
take part in developing one’s own habitat

ECOPARTNERSHIP
Ecopartnership means the network-like activity
of enterprises, officials and citizens,
which promotes sustainable development
in the way of life and business. The objective
of ecopartnership is to support and develop
the co-operation between enterprises,
municipalities, other groups and individual
citizens in Lahti Region.
Ecopartnership is organized in Lahti Region
by a special working group. The group
includes officials and representatives from
various companies. The purpose of ecopartnership
is to produce communication,
counselling, education and expert services
to promote sustainable development. The
main objectives are supporting environmental
know-how in private businesses in
the region, highlighting environmental responsibility
and strengthening the environmental
cluster.
Ecopartnership is carried out by for example
the following ways:
• Ecopartnership working group and infos
• Seminars
• EcoAction-competitions and
encouragement
• Events for the audience
• Communication and information

ENVIRONMENTAL
MANAGEMENT
The work for sustainable development in
municipalities is enhanced by developing
environmental management. Taking good
care of environmental matters results in
lesser use of natural resources and reduced
emissions as environmental knowledge
and administration improves. In practice,
the personnel in municipalities are
supported by guiding and counselling. Environmental
programs and reporting are
developed as well.
MATERIAL AND ENERGY
EFFICIENCY
Efficiency in the use of materials, energy
saving and renewable energy sources are
promoted in municipalities and companies.
Implementation of more environmentally
aware models are increased, and they
are announced both locally and nationally.
Municipalities, companies and citizens are
encouraged to make energy efficient choices.
The tools for this are energy information
and counselling, in addition to education
and technical solutions in improving
the ecological use of heat, electricity and
water. Eco-efficiency means creating more
services and well being from less raw material
and energy.
