Strategy 1: Encourage the development <strong>of</strong> senior housing in or<br />

near the <strong>Village</strong> Center to improve mobility and access to<br />

facilities and services.<br />

Strategy 2: Update the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance to<br />

allow elderly housing at appropriate densities, and encourage it<br />

to be developed in a clustered fashion that preserves open<br />

space and provides an appropriate range <strong>of</strong> unit sizes for senior<br />

residents.<br />

Strategy 3: Assist senior homeowners with finding resources<br />

and capacity to secure adequate and appropriate home repair,<br />

maintenance, renovation and modifications.<br />

Strategy 3: Provide code compliance assistance for housing<br />

rehabilitation programs through partnerships with local nonpr<strong>of</strong>it<br />

and volunteer organizations.<br />

Strategy 4: Support the construction <strong>of</strong> new or renovated<br />

structures to allow for senior apartments, or “granny flats,” on<br />

single-family lots as long as one <strong>of</strong> the structures is owneroccupied.<br />

Strategy 5: Partner with the Council on Aging St. Tammany<br />

(COAST) to provide housing and transportation assistance to<br />

<strong>Village</strong> residents.<br />

Strategy 2: Provide assistance with compliance <strong>of</strong> <strong>Village</strong> codes<br />

through the use <strong>of</strong> housing rehabilitation programs, where<br />

applicable, to help upgrade housing for senior citizens, disabled<br />

persons, and other eligible residents.<br />

Strategy 3: The <strong>Village</strong> will encourage the buffering <strong>of</strong><br />

incompatible uses through the development <strong>of</strong> buffer<br />

standards as part <strong>of</strong> a new Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance.<br />

Strategy 4: The <strong>Village</strong> will enforce safe construction through<br />

strict adherence to the building code, zoning, subdivision<br />

regulations and flood prevention provisions.<br />

5) Encourage green or LEED (Leadership in Energy and<br />

Environmental Design) buildings and sustainable<br />

architectural practices.<br />

Strategy 1: Encourage residential development that meets<br />

green building standards such as LEED and Model Green Home<br />

Building guidelines.<br />

Strategy 2: Encourage energy efficiency conversion for low- to<br />

moderate-income households through the use <strong>of</strong> energy<br />

efficiency rehabilitation programs.<br />

4) Utilize and Enhance Existing Housing Stock - Conserve<br />

the <strong>Village</strong>’s housing stock and preserve community<br />

character through enforcement <strong>of</strong> all codes.<br />

Strategy 1: The <strong>Village</strong> shall make enforcement <strong>of</strong> existing<br />

codes, including housing code violations and general code<br />

violations (e.g. abandoned vehicles, public nuisance) a priority.<br />
