COM255 Current Affairs in the <strong>Lebanese</strong><br />

Media [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is offered in Arabic, and taught<br />

by a visiting instructor who is a practicing<br />

journalist, or a political TV talk-show host. It<br />

surveys current, national, and/or international<br />

issues, making the headlines in Lebanon’s<br />

media. The course looks at the variety of ways<br />

different media treat these issues, and creates<br />

forums such as talk shows, news broadcasts,<br />

or short documentaries, where students<br />

report, analyze, and present, their contribution<br />

to the debate on these issues.<br />

COM324 History and Theory of Film<br />

[3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is a study of the development of<br />

film from its beginnings.<br />

Prerequisite: COM225 The Art of Film.<br />

COM325 Feature and Magazine Writing<br />

[3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is designed to give the student<br />

extensive practice in writing different types of<br />

feature articles and interviews for newspapers<br />

and magazines. Students will develop ideas<br />

and assess their market viability; produce<br />

query letters attempting to sell those articles,<br />

carry out the necessary research and, finally,<br />

write the articles.<br />

Prerequisite: COM214 News Writing and Reporting<br />

COM326 Script Writing [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course covers the principles and techniques<br />

of writing radio, television, and film scripts.<br />

Prerequisites: COM222 Introduction to Radio/<br />

TV/Film, and ENG202 Sophomore Rhetoric.<br />

COM327 Journalism Workshop I [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is an intensive, computer-assisted,<br />

writing-oriented, course in a laboratory setting.<br />

It covers re-writing wire service copy into straight<br />

news, as well as magazine articles, editorials,<br />

and features. It involves the production of three<br />

issues of a student newspaper.<br />

Prerequisite: COM214 News Writing and Reporting.<br />

COM328 Performance for TV & Film [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course involves the application of the<br />

principles of acting in performing for TV and<br />

film. It involves exercises in announcing,<br />

interviewing, and hosting TV programs, as well<br />

as performing in commercials, and acting in<br />

dramatic TV programs and films.<br />

COM329 Media Law & Ethics [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course explores legal and ethical<br />

principles, case studies, and the historical<br />

development, of the mass media regulation<br />

in Lebanon. The course includes comparative<br />

regional, and international, perspectives,<br />

whereby the development of media law<br />

and ethics in Lebanon is compared to<br />

developments in the Arab world, the United<br />

States, and Europe.<br />

Prerequisite: COM210 Communication Media<br />

and Society. Senior Standing, or the consent<br />

of the Instructor.<br />

COM332 Editing [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course covers the use of computer<br />

technology to edit video footage in creating<br />

documentary and dramatic TV programs.<br />

Prerequisite: COM222 Introduction to Radio/<br />

TV/Film.<br />

COM335 Advanced TV Production [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course covers the advanced aesthetical<br />

aspects of TV production in the studio, and on<br />

location. The course emphasizes the planning,<br />

and directing, of documentaries and TV drama.<br />

Prerequisite: COM235 Studio TV Production,<br />

and COM326 Script Writing.<br />

COM337 Creative Dramatics [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is a study of the principles and<br />

methods of developing original dramatizations<br />

with children. Observation of children’s classes<br />

in creative dramatics is included.<br />

Prerequisite: ENG102 English II.<br />

COM338 Oral Interpretation [3-0, 3cr.]<br />

This course covers the recreation of prose,<br />

poetry, and drama, through oral readings. The<br />

course emphasizes the principles and vocal<br />

techniques of reading aloud for an audience.<br />

Prerequisite: Junior Standing.<br />

COM342 Play Production I [3-0, 3cr.]<br />

This course covers the script and play analysis<br />

of various theatrical genres, and the principles<br />

and techniques of producing a theatrical<br />

performance. It involves exercises in staging<br />

selected scenes, and studying the structure<br />

and presentation of a one-act play.<br />

Prerequisite: COM242 Introduction to the Art<br />

of Theater.<br />
