The School of Arts and Sciences is home to the <strong>Lebanese</strong> <strong>American</strong> University’s oldest programs, which<br />
are the core of the University’s liberal arts tradition. It consists of the Dean’s office, six departments,<br />
and centers and institutes. The six departments are: Communication Arts; Computer Science and<br />
Mathematics; Education; Humanities; Natural Sciences; Social Sciences. These departments, their<br />
program offerings, and associated facilities are described in the respective sections. The centers and<br />
institutes and described below.<br />
MISSION<br />
In keeping with the Mission of the University, the School of Arts and Sciences strives to promote<br />
excellence in teaching and learning, and to encourage research and creative endeavors. The School<br />
encourages the fostering of diverse viewpoints, and honesty and integrity in <strong>academic</strong>, professional,<br />
and personal affairs of both the faculty and students.<br />
OBJECTIVES<br />
The objectives of the School of Arts and Sciences include:<br />
• Preparing well-informed and skilled individuals, who are competent, inquisitive, productive, and<br />
life-long learners.<br />
• Cultivating literacy in the Arts and Sciences.<br />
• Encouraging creative research.<br />
• Responding to the rapidly changing information technology, in and out of the classroom.<br />
• Providing for continuous Faculty development.<br />
• Developing student exchange programs to enrich the learning experience.<br />
• Preparing students who are motivated to pursue graduate studies.<br />
• Maintaining relations with schools, businesses, and industry, in order to help secure job<br />
placements for graduates of the School.<br />
• Responding to changing needs and trends, by modifying existing programs and developing new<br />
ones.<br />
LEARNING OUTCOMES<br />
As a result of their work in the School of Arts and Sciences, students will:<br />
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.<br />
• Demonstrate an understanding of scientific and quantitative principles.<br />
• Demonstrate an understanding of the major developments in the human experience.<br />
• Link theoretical knowledge to their practical applications.<br />
• Reason critically, and solve problems creatively.<br />
• Integrate and synthesize knowledge, and make connections across disciplines.<br />
• Show an understanding of, and respect for, diverse viewpoints.<br />
• Engage in independent inquiry, applying varied research methodologies.<br />
