Various subject matters at the Intermediate and Secondary Education: (Math, Science, Social Studies, English Language) *Currently frozen SUPPOTING FACILITIES Early Childhood Education Laboratory School (ECE LS) LAU’s ECE LS is a modern-day regular preschool that caters to children between 2.5/3-5 years of age. It adopts an integrated holistic childcentered approach to child’s learning and development. The preschool is fully equipped with a lab setting consisting of 2 observation booths overlooking the 2 classrooms, with onesided mirrors, video cameras, sound systems, dimmer lights, and computers, all connected to the classrooms to allow for uninterrupted observations for parents, students, visiting teachers, faculty, and staff. The role of the Lab School is twofold: 1. To provide quality care for the children, in a caring, nurturing and child-centered environment, both in its physical set-up and teachers and staff; and 2. From an academic perspective, the Lab School welcomes a multidisciplinary approach: while its primary purpose is to serve as a professional learning platform for students majoring in Early Childhood Education, students majoring in education, psychology, music, drama, nursing, among others can also benefit from its existence. Another important aspect of the Lab School is the rich environment it creates for early childhood research in both development and education. Through this, it encourages the community to be more involved as well as collaborative research between faculties within the academic milieu, locally, regionally and internationally. Department of Education BACHELOR OF ARTS (B.A.) IN EDUCATION MISSION Under the umbrella of LAU’s Vision, the Mission of the BA in Education (ECE & Elementary) is to prepare professional teachers who are academically well grounded in both their subject matter, and pedagogy, and to enable experienced educators to update their knowledge and skills. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES The BA in Education (ECE & Elementary) aims to prepare teachers who demonstrate: A. Relevant Knowledge – This includes: • Depth and breadth in subject, and in content. • General pedagogical knowledge. • Specific pedagogical content knowledge. • An awareness of the professional standards. • An awareness of the developmentally appropriate practice (in early childhood education). • An awareness of the national curriculum objectives and standards. B. Practical Skills • Diverse approaches to instruction, and assessment. • Effective classroom management strategies. • Motivational strategies. • Strategies to promote higher-level thinking. • Guidance and Discipline methods. C. Appropriate Attitude • Readiness to develop authentic relationships with students. • Readiness to establish a democratic, and socially just, learning environment. • Readiness to reflect on one’s practice, and continuous learning. LEARNING OUTCOMES Graduates in the BA in Education (ECE & Elementary) will be able to: 1. Develop clear and measurable instructional objectives. 2. Prepare yearly, term, and unit plans to adequately address curriculum content. 3. Prepare plans for effective instructional cycles, using a variety of instructional approaches appropriate to the content/ skill. 4. Employ effective instructional practices that optimize learning opportunities. 5. Use appropriate assessment methods, both formative and summative. 6. Plan and implement effective classroom management strategies. 7. Employ strategies to motivate students. 8. Implement strategies that minimize discipline problems. The Early Childhood Education Program prepares students to: • Plan and administer all the aspects of early childhood programs. • Teach young students basic motor and cognitive skills through art, music, creative dramatics, and other techniques • Use carefully planned teaching strategies based on children’s developmental stages. The Elementary Education Program prepares students to: • Teach children reading, language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, art, drama, music, and physical education. • Employ teaching strategies, which stimulate children’s thinking and challenge them to learn. • Use the latest instructional tools, and techniques, to make your teaching more effective.
