Updating the handbook is part of the revisions
to the TYBE workshop kit — creating
additional opportunities to explore ways of
yarning, thinking and working around the
safety of our children.
In developing a new edition of the kit, SNAICC
responded to encouraging feedback and helpful
hints received from organisations working
with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
children and young people.
SNAICC is also incorporating recent changes
in legislation and policy, along with the use
of current research, resources and programs
regarding child abuse, neglect and family
violence to improve the TYBE kit.
SNAICC developed a cultural needs booklet
which aims to ‘unpack’ what Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander people mean when
they refer to culture, and cultural needs.
The resource was developed following some
concerns from those who work with Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander children of ‘doing
the wrong thing’ or uncertainty about ‘where
to start’ when attempting cultural work with
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
The booklet portrays different aspects of
cultural needs and connections that enhance
a young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
person’s sense of identity and wellbeing. It offers
reflective practices to assist those involved
in mainstream child care across Australia to
understand some of the specific — but by no
means all — cultural needs of Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander children.
The cultural needs resource is in line with
Belonging, Being and Becoming: The Early
Years Learning Framework for Australia (EYLF)
practice of cultural competence.
Training
SNAICC was funded by the Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander Healing Foundation to
offer 10 free train-the-trainer workshops on
the best use of the Through Young Black Eyes
Workshop Kit. Workshop sites were chosen after
an expression of interest process — workshops
on SNAICC’s highly-regarded resource will
commence in November 2012.
SNAICC partnered with Save the Children
Australia to offer a free Course in Responding
to Domestic and Family Violence for up to 10
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family
violence workers in October-November 2012.
