In 2012, SNAICC was a member of the
Department of Health and Ageing Adaptation
Reference Group, actively contributing to
development of the department’s Get up &
Grow Indigenous resources, which promote
healthy eating and physical activity in early
childhood. SNAICC provided feedback on the
cultural appropriateness of resources and
contributed to the distribution strategy via
SNAICC members.
The resources include a director/coordinator
book, a staff and carer book, a cooking for
children book, a family book, six posters,
14 brochures and four stickers.
Training
SNAICC expanded its training function this
year with the creation of both a dedicated
team within SNAICC and a National Executive
sub-committee to deal with training issues.
The Training and Workforce Development Team
commenced work in late 2011, building on the
strong history of SNAICC’s policy, advocacy and
resource development work.
SNAICC provides training to support strong and
vibrant services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander children and families. Our training
helps to strengthen families, promote their
stability and enhance the lives of children.
The two-member team started by rolling out
training based on a selection of our popular
(and externally evaluated) resources and
engaged several highly-skilled Aboriginal
training facilitators to support us in this work
— creating a pool of consultants that will be
called upon to assist SNAICC in future.
We also formed partnerships with other
NGOs in the field of children’s services and
considered ways to expand our work in coming
years, including the potential to generate
some income to support SNAICC’s work.
Extensive preliminary work was undertaken
during the year in preparation for SNAICC’s
Fifth National Conference, to be held
in Cairns in June 2013. The program was
finalised, with registrations for the conference
to open early in 2013. See panel article on this
page for more information.
Fifth National Conference
SNAICC’s Fifth National Conference will be held
at the Cairns Convention Centre from
3 to 6 June 2013.
Titled For Our Children: Living and Learning
Together, the conference’s key objectives are:
Share and Celebrate Stories
To celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander cultures, strengths and successes in
child and family services. To share our stories
and ideas about what works and how we
address our challenges.
Inspire Action
To inspire and enable leaders, services and
others to act in a way that strengthens
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander agency,
self-determination, and connection to culture.
To ensure the rights of our children and
families are respected and fulfilled.
Listen, Learn and Grow
To listen, learn and grow our knowledge
of Elders, families and communities, to
strengthen our connection to culture. To
inspire, foster and develop leadership and
collective responses.
SNAICC’s is the only national conference
focusing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander children.
The conference is supported by an Expert
Advisory Group, comprising experts and
leaders on issues relating to the wellbeing of
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children
and families. Members include Geraldine
Atkinson, Shaun Coade, Lisa Coulson, April
Long, Krista McMeeken, Shane Merritt, Desley
Thompson and Kerry Tim.
