GETTING STARTED
Many English words have their roots in Latin, the language spoken in ancient Rome.
When you can recognize and understand the Latin roots in words, you have a good
chance of understanding what the words mean. Unlike base words, roots are word
parts that cannot stand alone. Roots must be combined with prefixes and suffixes to
form words. The graphic below shows several English words that are related to the
Latin root var, which means “different.”
I. Practice the Words
EXERCISE 1: Understand Latin Roots
Below are three Latin roots. Look up the roots in a dictionary to find two related words,
other than the target words. Write the words that you find on the lines.
Words will vary. Sample answers :
dict word 1: dictation
word 2:
sens word 1: insensitive word 2:
vis word 1: visible
word 2:
Wordsmart: Etymology
The English and French word revision comes from the Late Latin word revisionem,
from the Latin revisus, the past participle of revidere, which means to “to see
again.” When you look at something again, you often see things that you want to
change. When people use the word revision today, they usually use it to refer to a
corrected or changed version of something.
