INSERTION OF NASAL PACK<br />
A. FINGER-COT TYPE<br />
Materials:<br />
1. Finger,cot (middle finger cut off from a size 7 1/2 surgical gloves _ 1<br />
2. Antibiotic ointment (oxytetracycline/polymixin B) 5 g tube # 1<br />
3. Medium-strip gauze # 1 or 2<br />
4. Nasal speculum<br />
5. Nasal dressing forceps or bayonet forceps<br />
Procedure:<br />
1. Coat liberally the outer suface of the finger-cot with the antibiotic ointment.<br />
2. Place the cot over the speculum which is then introduced into the nose.<br />
3. Maintain pressure between your index finger, which is resting on the ala, and the blade of the speculum to<br />
avoid slipping of the finger-cot deep into the nasal chamber.<br />
4. Spread out the sides of the finger-cot by probing the nasal forceps within the finger-cot.<br />
5. Insert slowly the medium-strip gauze (dampened with sterile water) using the nasal dressing forcep until the<br />
whole chamber is fully packed.<br />
B. MEDIUM-STRIP GAUZE<br />
Materials:<br />
1. Medium-strip gauze # 1 or 2<br />
2. Antibiotic ointment (oxytetracycline/polymixin B) 5 g # 2 or 3<br />
3. Nasal speculum<br />
4. Nasal dressing forceps or bayonet forceps<br />
Procedure:<br />
1. Lubricate liberally the medium-strip gauze with the antibiotic ointment.<br />
2. With the speculum in place, insert the medicated strip using the nasal forceps in a pleated manner within the<br />
nasal chamber until fully packed.<br />
