needs analysis, applying learning models in designing and<br />

implementing programs, and evaluating the costs and benefits <strong>of</strong><br />

training and development. The course also considers career<br />

development issues and practices.<br />

individual performance. These systems can help managers improve<br />

workforce effectiveness and address performance problems.<br />

Management Skill Development<br />

This course concerns the development <strong>of</strong> managerial skills such as:<br />

involves self-assessment, analysis, practice, and application directed<br />

at improving students' personal effectiveness as managers.<br />

Organizational Analysis<br />

This course concerns the structures and processes <strong>of</strong> organizations<br />

technology and environment. Topics will include: organizational<br />

strategy and structure, organizational decision-making, conflict, life<br />

cycles, innovation, and emerging forms.<br />

Managing a Diverse Workforce<br />

This course concerns the increasing diversity <strong>of</strong> the work force and<br />

the major challenges and opportunities faced by organizations and<br />

their managers. Topics will include: maintaining fairness and justice,<br />

making effective decisions for performance improvement, allowing<br />

flexibility, and managing in the global environment. The course also<br />

examines the legal frameworks in place that value and protect<br />

employee and employer rights related to gender, race, age, religion,<br />

sexual orientation, ability, etc.<br />

Managing Information Systems<br />

An overview <strong>of</strong> management and organizational issues surrounding<br />

the Information Systems/Information Technology function (IS/IT) and<br />

in its interaction with business functions within and between<br />

organizations. Topics will include: the evolution <strong>of</strong> the IS/IT functions,<br />

functional area systems, current trends, strategy, managing and<br />

acquiring IS resources and ethical issues surrounding IS/IT.<br />

BUS 275 (or ADMN 275), BUS 288 (or ADMN 288), and BUS 290 (or<br />

Introduction to Taxation for Business Decisions<br />

This course provides an introduction to the business aspects <strong>of</strong><br />

taxation from the perspective <strong>of</strong> the business manager.<br />

* Note: Students are encouraged to have completed BUS 340 (or<br />

ADMN 340). Students may not receive credit for both BUS 384 and<br />

Intermediate Financial Accounting I<br />

This course continues and builds upon the study <strong>of</strong> financial<br />

accounting begun in BUS 285. It extends students' understanding <strong>of</strong><br />

generally accepted accounting principles through an in-depth<br />

examination <strong>of</strong> asset, liability and shareholders' equity valuation, and<br />

income measurement and financial statement analysis. It provides a<br />

greater awareness <strong>of</strong> the underlying rationale <strong>of</strong> existing practice and<br />

an appreciation <strong>of</strong> the characteristics and limitations <strong>of</strong> accounting.<br />

*** Prerequisite: BUS 285 (or ADMN 285) and BUS 290 (or ADMN<br />

290). Concurrent enrolment is allowed in BUS 290. ***<br />

Auditing Theory and Application<br />

This course emphasizes the philosophy <strong>of</strong> auditing and its importance<br />

in the acceptance <strong>of</strong> financial statements by society. Topics will<br />

include: audits, responsibilities <strong>of</strong> auditors, and the objectives <strong>of</strong><br />

independent audit.<br />

This course expands on the introductory cost accounting material<br />

examination <strong>of</strong> uses and limitations <strong>of</strong> quantitative techniques and the<br />

behavioural implications <strong>of</strong> internal financial systems.<br />

Finance: Theory and Application<br />

This course discusses theoretical models and their applications.<br />

Business Strategy<br />

This course focuses on the formulation and implementation <strong>of</strong> policy<br />

and strategy. It centers on the role and responsibilities <strong>of</strong> the general<br />

manager in formulating the goals and objectives <strong>of</strong> an organization; on<br />

integrating policies, plans, and programs; and, on using structures and<br />

systems <strong>of</strong> personal influence so that the organization can operate<br />

with a sense <strong>of</strong> direction and purpose.<br />
