WAMC Northeast Public Radio Celebrated the first anniversary of the launching of The Academic Minute, the daily segment that has become a higher education staple by bringing the latest research from campuses around the world to listeners across the United States, Canada, and online at www. academicminute.org. Upgrades to Digital HD Radio with grant support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting Digital Radio Conversion Fund. Starting on Sunday, November 13th, CDTA will introduce a series of significant improvements to Albany County service. The new routes, shaped largely by public input, will feature more cross town service and better job connections. CDTA’s awareness campaign entitled, “What’s Your Number Learn, Ride and Connect”, will help riders understand the service changes and discover where new connections are made. On The Scene 47 1. The Women’s Business Council celebrated 25 years of partnerships and progress on September 21. The event was presented by the Women’s Business Council which was sponsored by KeyBank, CDPHP, Times Union and BBL Hospitality. GenNext Tech Valley Young Professionals hosted representatives from local non-profits on September 27 for a panel discussion. The group heard from a dynamic panel on how volunteerism benefited their professional careers and about “the state of” non-profits in Tech Valley. The event was sponsored by Albany Medical Center, Verizon, Berkshire Bank and National Grid. Members got a behind the scenes look at the Regional Food Bank facilities on October 4. The tour, led by executive director Mark Quandt, gave attendees a taste of the Food Bank’s 62,000 square-foot warehouse/office facility. This non-profit provides more than 20 million pounds of food a year to 1,000 agencies. The tour was hosted by Colonie Business Council and sponsored by First New York Federal Credit Union. Pictured: Mark Quandt. 4. The Chamber hosted Mayor Jerry Jennings for his annual address to the membership. On October 4, the Mayor discussed Albany’s role in economic revitalization of the region and the impact recent economic initiatives will have on the capital city. His remarks also included an overview of the state of the city and his plans to spur business investment and neighborhood revitalization. Corporate sponsor was KeyBank. On October 12, the Chamber heard from Thomas Mattox, Commissioner of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance on tax issues as well as legislative and administrative priorities for 2012-2013 that impact the business community.
