Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce, a member c>t the State Board <strong>of</strong> Charit\". President <strong>of</strong><br />

the Trustees <strong>of</strong> the Western Uni\ersit\'. a Trustee <strong>of</strong> the I'ieal hastate Bank,<br />

aiul an inthiential citi.'.en <strong>of</strong> Pittsburgh. Mr. Scott was amon^ the iirst to devise<br />

means for tlie relief nf Jcshn.^town and to \isit the attlicted people. As<br />

Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Pittsbur'^h Relief Committee, he sx'stematized the distribution<br />

<strong>of</strong> supplies and entrenched himself in the hearts <strong>of</strong> the sutferers. Returning<br />

to <strong>Johnstown</strong> from ^b:lrrellville on Tuesda\' afternoon, June 4. to attend<br />

a mass-meeting c^f citizens, he arri\'ed just in time to liear liis name voted<br />

upon unanimouslv for Dictator <strong>of</strong> Cambria Coimt\ . discarding this<br />

title lor that <strong>of</strong> Director, he brought order out <strong>of</strong> chaos, restored contidence<br />

and left evervthing in e.xcellent shape for Geneial Hastings to take charge on<br />

June I2th. Hisvahiable services were recognized b\' placing him on the Fdood<br />

Relief Commission.<br />

S. S. Mar\ in. wlio worked unliringl}' for <strong>Johnstown</strong>, is an enterprising resident<br />

<strong>of</strong> Pittsburi;h. wh.ither he mo\ed frcun New York State in i>-63. Embarking<br />

in the cracker trade, he founded the establishment <strong>of</strong> S. S. Mar\in A:<br />

Co.. one <strong>of</strong> the largest concerns <strong>of</strong> the kind in the United States. He was a<br />

good soldier, and he has tilled man\' positions nf honor and trust. (^lovernor<br />

Beaver appointed Mr. Mar\in a member ot the State Commission, with the<br />

title <strong>of</strong> purchasim: agent for tlie Western District <strong>of</strong> Pt;nns\-l\ania. In this<br />

position, as in all others, he acquitted himself \\\\\\ credit. His experience in<br />

f)urcliasing food and supplies on a large scale proved iinalnablc. and he entered<br />

with his v.liole soul into his mission <strong>of</strong> charity. He summed up the condition<br />

<strong>of</strong> tlie stricken rei^ion in a single phrase- •Johnsto\\n is a funeral!"<br />
