FIGuRE 2: Grower perceptions of the top environmental issues today “Interestingly, cotton industry and external stakeholders largely agree on environmental management issues, with most stakeholder survey respondents (78 per cent) identifying water related factors as core environmental issues; 76 per cent identified soil related issues; 42 per cent related issues associated with chemical application; 40 per cent with climate impact and energy use; and 36 per cent with issues relating to protection of the surrounding environment. “When asked about important environmental priorities for cotton growing over the next three to five years, industry and external stakeholders ranked water use efficiency, greenhouse emissions and soil health as the top three priorities (Figure 3).” Grower survey participants were asked to nominate their top three environmental management issues for today. Water use efficiency out-ranked pesticide use and management, soil health, and fertiliser use and management (Figure 2). Implementing recommendations from its two previous environmental studies in 1991 and 2003 has significantly improved the industry and the 2012 assessment will contribute to the shape of the industry’s strategic direction for the next five to 10 years. The report arrived at a critical time for the industry. With both Cotton Australia’s and the CRDC’s strategic planning for 2013–18 underway, the industry is well placed to address one of the report’s key recommendations which is to develop a five-year RD&E strategy for continuous improvement in environmental management and performance in cotton growing. Improving environmental performance on cotton farms is integrated into CRDC’s current Strategic Plan within the goals of Farming Systems R&D. There is an opportunity to now consider the merits of an explicit commitment to continuous improvement in environmental performance in cotton growing that enhances communication, collaboration and improves the measurement of success. This will enable the Australian industry to communicate to growers, government and the market how it has improved environmental performance over time The industry has agreed that by 2029 the Australian Cotton Industry will be a ‘Responsible – producer and supplier of the most environmentally and socially responsible cotton on the globe’ (Vision2029). “Implementing the report’s recommendations will better position the industry to respond to market-driven changes related to environmental performance,” Bruce Pyke said. Calling climate champions CRDC is looking for two climate-savvy cotton growers to join the National Climate Champion Program which involves 37 farmers from different regions and enterprises across Australia who work with scientists to bring climate research to the paddock and tell climate researchers what farmers need for the future.
