For the second year in a row Bucknell got all it could handle from Bill Courtney
‘92 and the Cornell Big Red, but the Bison outscored Cornell 15-4 over the
last 5:36 and prevailed 72-56 to get to 13-2 on the season. Cameron Ayers
scored a game-high 16 points to help Bucknell equal its best 15-game start
in program history, and the Bison became the first team in Patriot League
history to get to 13 regular-season non-conference wins. Bryson Johnson
had a terrific all-around game with 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists
with only one turnover in 35 minutes. Mike Muscala recorded his ninth
double-double of the season and 33rd of his career with 13 points and 11
rebounds to go with four blocks and four assists. Joe Willman also scored in
double-figures with 10 points in only 17 minutes. Willman was in foul trouble,
but Bucknell got some big minutes from Brian Fitzpatrick off the bench.
Ian Hummer and Denton Koon scored 17 points each to lead hot-shooting
Princeton to a 79-67 victory over Bucknell. Mike Muscala logged 17 points
and 11 rebounds and Joe Willman added 15 points for the Bison, who headed
into to the Christmas Break with an 11-2 record after seeing their six-game
overall winning streak and eight-game winning streak against the Ivy League
come to an end. Bucknell had held 10 straight opponents under 40-percent
shooting from the field, but Princeton shot 51 percent and hit 11 3-pointers in
25 attempts. The Tigers were the biggest team the Bison had faced all season,
starting five players 6-5 or taller, and all five scored in double figures. Koon,
a 6-8 two-guard, had success posting up inside and hit 6 of 9 shots from
the field. Meanwhile, posts Mack Darrow and Hans Brase each hit a pair of
3-pointers. Brase scored 14 points and Darrow had 10.
Bucknell went into Mizzou Arena and went blow-for-blow with 12th-ranked
Missouri for all of 40 minutes, but the Bison came up a fraction short and fell
66-64 to drop to 13-3 on the season. Mike Muscala had a huge game with 25
points, 14 rebounds, four assists and two blocks, but Phil Pressey scored 19 of
his 26 points in the second half to help the Tigers get to 11-2. Cameron Ayers
added 13 points and Bryson Johnson had 11 for the Bison. Bucknell came
close to beating a ranked opponent for the first time since 2005, and they
nearly ended Mizzou’s 72-game home winning streak against non-league
foes, but the Tigers hit some big jump shots down the stretch and got two
clinching free throws from Earnest Ross with 3.0 seconds left. Bucknell led
28-24 at the break, but on Missouri’s opening possession of the second half
Stefan Jankovic hit the Tigers’ first 3-pointer of the night. Jankovich followed
that with a one-handed jam to give the Tigers the lead back.
Mike Muscala recorded 29 points and eight rebounds, and Bucknell locked
in on defense after a slow start to run away from Loyola (Md.) 66-46 before
a sellout crowd at Reitz Arena. The Bison bounced back nicely from just its
second loss of the season at Princeton, and they improved to 12-2 to match
the best 14-game start in program history. Bryson Johnson had a terrific
all-around game, producing 11 points, five assists and two steals while
also holding Loyola scoring leader Dylon Cormier to 5-for-15 shooting. Joe
Willman added 10 points and eight rebounds while helping limit standout
forward Erik Etherly to one field goal and three points. Cameron Ayers had
10 points, and his mark, Loyola 3-point sharpshooter Robert Olson, did not
make a trey and scored six points on 3-for-11 shooting.
