Annapolis, Md. • March 2, 2013
Bucknell overcame the burden of both sky-high expectations and a red-hot
Lafayette team, finishing off another championship run with a 64-56 victory.
Behind a combined 34 points and 19 rebounds from the senior frontcourt
tandem of Mike Muscala and Joe Willman, the Bison earned an NCAA Tournament
berth for the second time in three years and the sixth time overall.
Muscala recorded his national-best 22nd double-double with 20 points
and 11 rebounds, Willman logged 14 points and eight boards, and junior
Ben Brackney keyed a critical effort from the Bison bench with eight points.
Muscala earned Patriot League Tournament MVP honors for the second
time, and he joined Willman and Cameron Ayers (nine points, six rebounds)
on the All-Tournament Team. Lafayette came in averaging 69.5 points and
8.2 made 3-pointers per game, but the Bison held them to 56 points and
5-for-15 shooting from the arc.
Bucknell used a 19-2 second-half run to turn an 11-point deficit into a sixpoint
lead midway through the second half, but sixth-seeded Butler went
back on top with an 8-0 run of its own and held off the 11th-seeded Bison for
a 68-56 victory in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Joe Willman
scored a career-high 20 points on 10 of 16 shooting and Mike Muscala added
nine points and 10 rebounds as Bucknell finished its 2012-13 campaign with
a 28-6 record, setting the Bucknell and PL marks for wins in a season. Four
Bulldogs scored in double figures with Rotnei Clarke leading the way with
17 points. Andrew Smith posted 14 points and 16 rebounds while also often
playing solid defense on Muscala, who entered the game as the only player in
the nation averaging at 18 points and 11 rebounds. Bucknell trailed 21-14 at
the half as tough defense by both teams led to combined 16-for-55 shooting
in the first 20 minutes. Butler extended its lead to 29-18 with 16:35 left, but
a three-point play by Muscala ignited the Bison comeback.
