In a game that was slowed by 43 foul calls, Muscala and WIllman both had to work around some foul trouble throughout the day. Muscala rebounded his own miss and stuck it back in with eight-tenths of a second remaining to give Bucknell a remarkable 56-55 victory over American. The Bison scored the game’s final eight points after trailing 55-48 inside two minutes to play, and they overcame some rare poor free-throw shooting to improve to 18-4. Muscala, playing with a bandaged chin after taking two separate elbows to the face, finished with 16 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Cameron Ayers added 14 points for the Bison, who managed an important road victory despite shooting 11-for-24 from the free-throw line and 1-for-10 from 3-point range. But they got key stops down the stretch and American kept them alive with two missed front ends of 1-and-1s in the final 33 seconds. Both teams came in unbeaten in Patriot League play, but Lehigh moved to 14-4 overall and 4-0 in the league, while the Bison fell to 16-4, 3-1, despite 16 points, eight rebounds and six blocked shots from Mike Muscala. Joe Willman added 15 points and nine rebounds and freshman forward Dom Hoffman had the best game of his young career with 10 points off the bench. B.J. Bailey made all four of his 3-point attempts and scored a game-high 18 points, while Mackey McKnight had 17 points for the Mountain Hawks. The biggest difference on the stat sheet came at the 3-point arc, where Lehigh went 10-for-18 and Bucknell 2-for-14. The Bison held the Mountain Hawks to 11-for-41 shooting inside the arc and 35.6-percent shooting overall. But Lehigh, which came into the game ranked second in the nation in team 3-point percentage (.428), hit some critical long-range shots down the stretch. The Bison evened the season series against the Mountain Hawks and took over sole possession of first place in the Patriot League at 9-2. Mike Muscala sat out most of the first half after picking up two quick fouls, but he still managed 12 points and nine rebounds. Bucknell never skipped a beat when fellow senior Brian Fitzpatrick replaced Muscala in the lineup. Fitzpatrick scored six points and grabbed nine rebounds in the first half alone, and he finished the night with a careerhigh 10 boards. Fitzpatrick wasn’t the only reserve to play a critical role in the victory. Ben Brackney hit two of the team’s five second-half 3-pointers and finished with six points and three rebounds. Steven Kaspar piloted the offense with seven assists, while Ryan Frazier was big at the other end of the floor defending all-star point guard Mackey McKnight. Cameron Ayers had 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Bryson Johnson tacked on 12 points and three assists for Bison, who won their fifth straight. The 100th all-time meeting between Bucknell and Colgate was all Bison early on. Ryan Hill burst out of the gates with a slashing layup and a 3-pointer to send Bucknell on its way to a quick 9-0 lead. Colgate finally got on the board 4:22 into the contest on a jumper by Murphy Burnatowski, who would go on to score 23 points. The Bison would take a 34-23 lead into the locker room at halftime. Mike Muscala tallied 29 points and 15 rebounds, and Cameron Ayers added 20 for the Bison, who saw their five-game winning streak end. Bucknell had won eight straight games against Lafayette, but the Leopards ended that streak with a strong second-half performance. The Bison led 32-25 at intermission and by as many as 11 early in the second half before the Leopards rallied. Bucknell held one of the top-shooting teams in the league to 25.0-percent accuracy in the first half, but Lafayette shot 50.0 percent in the second and scored the game’s final four points. Seth Hinrichs led Lafayette with 20 points, while Johnson added 17 and Joey Ptasinski 14.
