buildings were
SATURDAY, JULY 7
Great Strides Walk
To show support for 6 year old great-granddaughter, Ellie, who
has Cystic Fibrosis, Jerry and Joanne Kartak of Camano Island,
are sponsoring “Ellie’s Team” at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s
annual Great Strides Walk Saturday at the Tulalip Amphitheater.
Cystic Fibrosis is a fatal children’s disease: In the 1950s, few of its
victims lived to attend elementary school. There is still no cure,
but advances in research and treatment have enhanced the quality
of life and brought the median survival rate up to 37 years for
the 30,000 children and young adults in the USA with this genetic
disease. Exciting break-through progress made in recent research
has brought about a new problem: For the first time in CF history,
research opportunities are coming at a pace that is exceeding the
ability to fund them. Because of the relatively small number of CF
victims, it is considered an “orphan disease” and all funds must be
raised privately. For more information on how you can show your
support by walking with us or donating, contact Jerry & Joanne at
Wisdom & Wit
INDEPENDENCE DAYS
By Jack Archibald
“Some of us layabouts at the Poker Parlor were trying to think
up something special for an upcoming 4th of July celebration.
We figured we got so many Vets down this way the Diner might
as well declare itself a VFW South End Auxilliary. And since most
of them are vintage car guyz too, they could hold their own annual
Independence Day Parade from Camano Head to the Elger
Bay Store. I, of course, wanted to just use these militiamen as an
excuse to secede from the Island, but cooler heads prevailed. As
usual.
Two Toke Tom served in Viet Nam and now is pretty much antievery
war. Jimmy Z, who’s old enough to be Tom’s old man,
fought the Japanese in WW2. Tom thinks Jimmy’s still fighting
em and maybe so, but I notice Jimmy driving a Toyota pickup
now even though he swore for 60 years he’d never buy a ‘Jap Car’.
Baghdad Bill fought in the second Iraq War and Big Larry just got
back two years ago from Afghanistan. Jerry spent a year in Korea
and frostbit a couple of fingers he wishes he had back, but he
still can play a mean guitar. We even got Crazy Eddie who ‘liberated’
Grenada. We’re missing Somalia and Panama and Bosnia,
but with all the newcomers rolling in, we may cover those too
eventually.
Sometimes the boyz argue among themselves about those wars
and sacrifice and what patriotism really means at the Friday night
poker game we’ve been running since 1986 down at the Marina
and Bait Shop. Two dollar limit on bets, no limit on alcohol. The
pots don’t do much damage, but single nettle Daddle Distillery
moonshine sometimes does. I sit in with these war-hardened patriots
most Fridays and serve as their patsy and their sometime
referee, the one who never served even in peacetime. Or what
Two Toke calls a draft dodging, student deferred, flag burning,
Summer of Love hippie protester. He takes great joy in telling
me I would’ve loved the smell of napalm in the morning over
there on the Delta. Jimmy Z chimes in how his platoon could’ve
won Viet Nam single-handed although Jimmy never once has
told us one iota the hell that must have been Iwo Jima. But he’s
the one who puts a liver spotted hand on Bill’s arm whenever Bill
gets overwhelmed by memories of buddies lost in the HumVee
he was driving when it was blown off the road to the airport in
Baghdad.
We’ve fought too many wars, I think, before realizing I’ve said it
out loud. I see by their pinched lips and averted eyes I won’t get
an argument tonight. Patriotism comes in all uniforms, even no
uniform at all. Big Larry finally breaks the swelling silence, pushes
a handful of quarters into the pot and says, real quiet, “I’m willing
to spend a couple bucks, Skeeter, to see if you got more than
bluff in this hand.” Grateful to change the subject, I say, “Name of
the game, Big. Read em and weep.”
LOCAL POEMS
& STORIES
Proud to Be an American By Leif Hanson
“As a Christian, I find at times the struggle between nation and
faith to be quite hard. How do I follow Jesus while those around
me who say they’re doing the same thing pledge allegiance to
their country How do I stay on the straight and narrow while
so many others have taken up the sword against an enemy of
flesh—many who are Americans, if not all. I do it by the Holy
Spirit, and not, for sure, by my own understanding. My allegiance,
as a Christian, is first and foremost to the Lord, my Savior, Jesus
Christ, the highest of authority, the epitome of authority, the
righteous One. Am I then wrong when my allegiance is pledged
to someone other than my nation Respect and honor are due to
my nation to the extent even of emotion—what some call good
pride. Whatever that feeling is—when the flag is lowered, or the
bell tolls, or the hats come off in salute to our flag—compares in
no way to what I feel for my Lord; and how could it It is a difficult
struggle and second to my faith, I am proud to be an American.”
Battle of the beaches By James M. Shipley
“Every year on the 4th of July my family packs the car and the family
dog and we travel the many miles from Elger Bay on Camano Island
to Juniper Beach...also on Camano Island. As we empty the car,
the dog swiftly makes his escape inside the house, under the bed...
where he remains until about midnight when we return home. It’s a
family tradition to go to Juniper Beach where my wife’s parents live
and join in the “Battle of the Beaches!” I call it that name because as
soon as dusk approaches, the beaches of Camano Island are ablaze
with bonfires and fireworks. As the fireworks boom above us, as
the artillery shells explode in the air, and while kids are running
across the sand waving sparklers, the fellows across Port Susan
Bay at Beach Number 1 and 2 (the country club beaches) are doing
the same thing. It appears as though both our beaches are fighting
in a campaign to conquer the opposing beach. We look across
the water and can see the hundreds of thousands of dollars worth
of fireworks burn up in the air and simultaneously Juniper Beach
does the same thing. There is an unspoken contest to see which
beach can produce the bigger spectacle (and I have to confess that
I think the country club beaches had us beat the past couple of
years). There is such a non-stop barrage of flying firework debris,
sparks, and thunderous booms, that I can easily imagine myself in
an epic battle from a long-time feud. Though I’ve never been in a
battle or war myself, I can understand why the symbolism of “the
bombs bursting in air” have continued the tradition of fireworks
on Independence Day. In that frame of mind, sometimes when
a large “bomb” explodes just a few yards away, my instinct, like a
fine trained soldier, is to jump onto my son to shield him from the
shrapnel. The spirit of the 4th of July is alive all throughout Camano
Island and Stanwood as neighborhoods and beaches fly their flags
and send their “rockets red glare” up into the sky. So the tradition
continues this year and I plan to invest in some fireworks of my
own that will help ensure Juniper Beach of a victory this year. We
may win the battle this year, but the war will forever continue so
long as fireworks and the spirit of the 4th of July continue as well.
FISHING
REPORT
“Sockeye opened on the Skagit River on June 16th from Highway
536 (Memorial Highway Bridge) at Mount Vernon to the mouth of
Gilligan Creek. Anglers have a daily limit of three sockeye, with a
minimum size of 12 inches. There’s alot of debate about the best
way to fish for Sockeye, but the most common theme seems to be
a simple red hook with lots of shrimp oil on it. In Baker Lake(which
opens on July 1st), you would troll that hook behind a size 0
chrome dodger. Some very important season updates: Lingcod
is now closed in areas 8-1 & 8-2. Sturgeon can be retained until
June 30th. Daily limit 1 per person, 38” min. to 54” max length from
fork. Release Green Sturgeon. After that it is catch and release only
until September. Salmon is open in the Tulalip Hatchery(Bubble)
area from June 10-Sept. 3rd Fridays through noon on Mondays.
22” minimum, release Wild Chinook. CRABBING is open July 1st &
2nd in areas 8-1, 8-2 & 9, then again Thursdays through Mondays
through Labor Day with a daily limit of 5 dungeness and 6 red rock
crab. Dungeness must be at least 6 1/4” diameter, males only and
in hardshell condition. San Juan CRABBING opens on July 15th,
same rules as above. Salmon is open in area 9 from July 1-15, release
wild Chinook & Chum. Many Puget Sound Rivers(including
the Skagit) are now open for Sockeye and Kings, check the regs for
rules on the different sections of river; the lower Skagit opened on
Saturday, June 16th for Sockeye.”
Nature Aware by Rick Wood
The fragile relationship between nature and Man echoes through
the words and images in Nature Aware. Being aware of nature
starts when you look at an animal in the wild and you recognize
its beauty. The progression into being truly Nature Aware is
when you watch an animal in the wild and realize that it sees your
beauty, too. After a tragedy involving a nuisance animal shooting
author Rick Wood begins to open his eyes to truly see the natural
world around him. Collected from six years’ worth of experiences
photographing wildlife in Washington State, mostly on and
around Camano Island, Nature Aware is a personal narrative of
growth and discovery. The author takes readers along as he gets
close to wild foxes, seals, orca and many more incredible animals
through anecdotes and photographs. From rafting down a river
lined with more than 150 American bald eagles to hiking in the
mountains to find one of Washington’s most endangered rodents,
Wood’s storytelling puts you right there — in the action. More
than 45 full-color photos help readers understand the majesty of
the natural world. Nature Aware is the author’s debut non-fiction
book. Wood is a former Stanwood/Camano NEWS reporter and
his writing and photography have appeared in more than a dozen
newspapers, several magazines and major news media outlets
online. He currently resides in Florida and has dedicated his life to
animal conservation and environmental education.
Bald Eagle Fourth of July Wreath
MATERIALS: Ring of cardboard (empty cereal boxes work wonderfully)
• construction paper (red, white and blue) • scissors • glue
INSTRUCTIONS: Trace a small plate and a large plate onto a piece
of old cardboard. Empty cereal boxes or frozen dinner boxes work
well. It doesn’t matter if you go over the folds of the cardboard
trace plate. Cut a small strip of cardboard and glue it onto the
back of the ring over any folds in the cardboard. This will reinforce
the ring. Cut strips of construction paper (about 1 1/2 inches by
4 inches). Glue the strips into rolls (like making a paper chain) reinforce.
Glue the rolls of construction paper onto the wreath. We
made a red, white and blue pattern. Glue the head onto the front
of the wreath. Glue the star onto the head so it looks like it is being
held by the beak. Glue the body on the back of the wreath.
Glue the claws and tail onto the bottom of the body. Glue the
wings onto the back of the body. – www.dltk-kids.com
- 8pm. For the second year, Slow Food Port Susan, with the support
of Hay Bale Productions and the Stanwood/Camano community,
is very excited to create a bit of magic at the Fairgrounds
up on Pioneer Highway. It’s a festival all about local, organic and
wholesome food, enhanced by Americana roots music featuring
both national and regional artists. Just as last year, we hope to
create a very special moment in time for all those who attend.
Yahoo! Yippee! And Yahoo, again! This year’s music Headliners
include New Orleans Legends, The Iguanas and Californian
Rocker, Chuck Prophet. Local/regional performers include Knut
Bell, Nick Vigarino, Side Saddle, Alice Stewart, Duffy Bishop and
more. We will also present speakers, authors, chefs, and local
vendors offering such things as local honey, organic olive oil,
artisan cheeses, breads and more. And don’t forget the food!
You’ll never see soggy curly fries or lame hot dogs on a stick at
this event. We offer a wide variety of local and organic food artfully
prepared from local and regional vendors. Think cool food
trucks, homemade pastries and more. Slow Food Port Susan is a
non-profit organization, passionately committed to the promotion
of the area’s farming heritage and its future sustainability.
We are currently working on a vibrant summertime Stanwood
gardens into our schools and development of a local food hub
- Port Susan Food & Farming Center. Our Annual Harvest Jubilee,
now in its sixth year, and the Spring Nursery Tour are all endeavors
we support. As we add the Slow Food Roots Music Festival
eagle-naming contest
Judy Chapman suggested to us to have a contest to name the bald
eagle that regularly hunts/rests/shows off by sitting on the top of a
telephone pole just west of the Mark Clark Bridge bridge (pictured
above). Since we do not know if it’s a male or female, the name
should be one that would fit either (for example: Chris, or Cameron...).
Wild Wings at The Open Gate Farm
Three bald eagles circled above the farm this morning. They were
magnificent in their wild majesty as they sliced through the misty
air. Or would have been if they had not been calling to our chickens
and ducks to come out and play. We have learned over the
years that these symbols of American might and sovereignty do
not always play nicely. Especially with our ducks and chickens. So
we stood on the ground with heads tilted back like a bunch of
tourists while our poultry waited quietly for the all clear signal
from us, not the eagles. In the air, these are incredible birds. You
can see their power and sense their confidence. On the ground
they are not to be ignored either. Hopping about after vermin in
a hay field, we’ve seen traffic stopped to stare many times. Isn’t
it interesting though that awesome can turn to awful when the
reality of our relationships enters the picture When what we love
flies away in the talons of an insensitive bird The “natural order”
is not so natural when love is not taken into account. Yet love is
what really matters to us people, isn’t it. And at the end of the day,
when we tuck the ducks and chickens in and hear their bedtime
prayers, love will always trump wild grandeur.
4th Of July and your pets
There are things we can all do to put our pets at ease this holiday
weekend. Here are some common sense tips to keep in mind:
1. Create a safe haven: Even if your friend’s Fourth of July party is
dog-friendly, it’s always safer and less stressful (for you and your
pet) to leave them behind. Keep cats and dogs safe from the noise
in a quiet, sheltered and escape-proof part of your house with
plenty of fresh water. Consider leaving a TV or radio on to mask
the sound of the fireworks and to provide familiar noises while
you’re out.
2. Tire ‘em out: If you have a dog that you know fears fireworks
and loud noises, Wag’N Enterprises founder, Ines de Pablo recommends
exercising and feeding your pooch a few hours before the
festivities begin so she’s dog-tired and can more easily relax.
3. Keep pets out of hot cars: Never leave your pet unattended in a
parked car during the day. Partially opened windows on hot days
do not provide sufficient airflow and animals can quickly overheat,
and potentially suffer from heat stroke. Leaving them in the
car also puts them in jeopardy of being stolen. Also never leave
animals tethered or chained outside. Pets can injure or even hang
themselves if they try to jump or flee from unfamiliar noises.
4. Read labels: Don’t apply sunscreens or insect repellents to animals
that are not labeled specifically for their use.
5. Decorate with care: If you are hosting a party, your pet may easily
mistake your red, white and blue glow sticks as chew toys, while
cats can become tangled in streamers and ribbon. Pet-proof your
home and keep your Fourth decorations out of paw’s reach.
6. Beware of matches and lighter fluid: The ASPCA warns that certain
types of matches contain chlorates, which could potentially
damage blood cells and result in difficulty breathing if ingested by
your pet. Lighter fluid can be irritating to a pet’s skin, and, if swallowed,
can cause gastrointestinal irritation and central nervous
system depression.
7. Store fireworks in a pet-free zone: Exposure to lit fireworks can
result in severe burns or trauma trauma to the face and paws of
curious pets, but even unused fireworks can pose a danger. Many
types contain potentially toxic substances, including potassium
nitrate, arsenic and other heavy metals.
8. Don’t feed the animals: Never give pets BBQ scraps and ask other
revelers to refrain from feeding your animal(s) as well. Some human
foods — including alcohol, cooked bones, onions, avocado,
grapes and raisins — can be toxic to pets, or at the very least can
cause severe stomach upset.
9. Label your pet: Every 4th of July, animal control takes in lost animals
frightened by the bright lights and loud noises of fireworks.
Make sure your pets wear identification at all times and are microchipped
with your updated contact information.
10. Be prepared: Have a basic pet first aid kit on hand and know
the location and hours of the nearest emergency pet hospital just
in case. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
Have a safe and happy 4th of July everyone. –www.blog.sfgate.com.
Old Glory Cake “An ideal dessert for 4th of July!”
INGREDIENTS:
Cake: Zest and juice of 2 lemons • 2 (18-1/4 oz.) boxes white cake
mix • 6 egg whites • 1 tsp. lemon extract
Frosting: 1/2 c. unsalted butter, at room temperature • 1/2 c. solid
vegetable shortening, at room temperature • 2 (1 lb.) boxes confectioners’
sugar • 4 T. milk • 2 T. lemon juice
Decoration: 3/4 c. fresh blueberries, washed and dried • 3 c. fresh
large raspberries, washed and dried
DIRECTIONS: Cake: Heat oven to 350 degrees . Coat two 15 x 10-
inch jelly-roll pans with nonstick cooking spray. Pour lemon juice
into 4-cup measuring cup; add enough water to equal 2-2/3 cups.
In large bowl, beat cake mixes, egg whites, lemon zest, juice-water
mixture and lemon extract to blend, about 3 minutes. Divide
evenly between two prepared pans; smooth tops. Bake until cake
springs back when lightly touched, about 20 minutes. Let cool on
wire racks 10 minutes. Place rack over each cake. Carefully invert
cakes and racks and remove pans from cakes. Let cool to room
temperature. Frosting: Beat butter and shortening in large bowl
1 to 2 minutes, until fluffy. Slowly add confectioners’ sugar, milk
and lemon juice. Continue beating on low until well blended and
good spreading consistency, adding more milk a teaspoon at a
time. Decoration: Place one layer on serving tray. Reserve 1 cup
frosting for piping. Frost layer with 1 cup frosting; top with second
layer; frost top and sides. Place reserved frosting in pastry
bag with a star tip. Mark off a field for stars with toothpicks 6 inches
across and 5 inches down. Fill in with blueberries. Place seven
red stripes of raspberries on cake as shown, leaving equal spacing
for 6 white stripes between them. Carefully pipe white frosting
stripes between the rows of raspberries. Refrigerate uncovered
to set frosting, then loosely cover with nonstick aluminum foil.
Refrigerate until ready to serve. Let stand at room temperature
for about 20 minutes before serving.
