CALENDAR
OF EVENTS
Did you
know
The Easter
bunny is based
on an actual
person in history.
Saint Coniglio of
Italy is credited
to be the “Saint
of Rabbits.” Every
Spring during
his lifetime he
treated rabbits
and gave them
to children in
hospitals and
orphanages
to take care of
so that they
wouldn’t die in
the wild. After
Coniglio’s death,
every year in
early Spring kids
would receive
baby rabbits and
other treats as
tribute.
Stanwood/Camano Island is about to get
Sprinkled with Happiness!
At 5pm., at HWY 532 at the Mark Clark Bridge, a group of smiling
people wearing bright yellow shirts will be Sprinkling Happiness.
Created by Laura Lavigne, founder of the Anacortes Center for
Happiness, The Happiness Sprinkling Project is a group of people
gathering at a busy spot in town holding up signs. Happiness signs.
Signs that say things like, “It’s Going to be All Right” and “You are
Loved.” They do this for an hour and as they do, magic happens.
People being ‘sprinkled’ on their way home from work are surprised,
puzzled – and moved. They smile, they wave, they honk. Many join
in & start Sprinkling themselves. The Sprinklings started last May &
have been spreading like well... happiness and have been received
with a mix of surprise, delight and occasionally tears of emotion.
Anyone is invited join in and participate in this powerful and FUN
event! The Stanwood/Camano Island Happiness Sprinkling Ambassador
is Dawn Jex and she can be reached at 360-631-0587.
What if Jesus is Inviting us to Love
the World instead of Escape to Heaven
Many Christians think that Jesus was trying to get us to heaven
when we die. This reduces Jesus to a personalized savior & the earth
into a waiting room. The earth and the humans who are a part of it
are facing huge challenges. How do we embrace life as it is How do
we live together with people who are different from us How will
we live together while respecting the earth and our children We
need all hands on deck to address these issues together. The Catacomb
Churches invite you to join us in thinking and feeling about
this way of understanding Jesus at an event at the Camano Center
from 6pm-8pm. The Catacomb Churches is a part of the Lutheran
and Episcopal churches. We are a network of interconnected house
churches each with a distinct focus of nonviolent public leadership
in the larger world. www.catacombchurches.org
How to Make a Farmer
Fresh from
the farm
“It doesn’t take much to make a young fellow a farmer. Some persistent
asking for seeds. Excitement at planting a tray of lettuce
and jalepenos and cucumbers and water melons under the guiding
eye of an old man who lives down the block. And taking all the
seeds he can home to think about. Then another night, stopping
by the old man’s house to borrow his watering can to give them all
a drink. And get more seeds. And then returning the watering can
and to ask for more seeds. And giving reports on the status of his
tray of hope. Nope. Nothing has shown leaves yet.
And then tonight to tell the grey beard that the lettuce is up! It
is actually growing, just like the old guy said it would! This is so
exciting! Whole new horizons and possibilities open up. No longer
does the young man’s world stop at the end of the street. Even at
the age of 10, a garden begins to form in his mind and his heart.
He is so excited he forgot to ask for more seeds.
“We’re happily
hoeing in
Mexico for a
season to teach
children how to
raise food & help
them put in large
gardens to provide
vegetables they
don’t get now.
Neighbors are
helping. It’s all
coming together
in wonderful way.”
And once more the watering can goes down the street to give new
leaves a bath of hope. And once more, it gets returned. But this
time the old man tells the lad to wait a moment. Drying off the
can, he takes a marker and carefully writes, “Por Mateo. Con gracias.
Granjero Jon” and handing it back tells the young man it is
his now. The old guy is leaving and he wants him to have this tool
of caretaking, a can to give the water of life to a dry and thirsty
world.
And as the young fellow holds it up proudly as he heads home,
reading the words to little brother who has watched it all with awe
filled eyes, the old man and his wife look out to see a 10 year old
boy become a farmer. They smile to each other, gently close the
door and know the world will be in good hands. A new farmer will
be out there in the days to come, watering everything he thinks
might grow. Just as a good farmer does.
It didn’t take much to make a farmer. A few seeds. A few pots. A
little dirt. A watering can. And a little love. Anybody could have
done it. Even our 10 year old friend, Mateo, can show you how.”
CASA’S PET OF THE WEEK:
Hey, I’m Nate, an energetic tiger. I was freed from a
traveling circus that went out of business last month.
I have a little bit of attitude, but I purr whenever
a fresh lamb or newly killed rabbit is thrown into
my cage. But don’t let that scare you, I’d be a perfect
companion, but make sure there are no other
pets or small children in your home, beause I would
probably eat them.
he was uncapable of mating with the female rhinos
Wisdom & Wit
Let’s Give the Gullible a Break This Year
by Jack Archibald
The Crab Cracker asked if I could maybe whip up an April Fool’s
sketch again this year. You know, something in the line of Tyee
Store’s Grand Opening for South End Greenworks, the new recreational
marijuana outlet for our own hybridized blend: Camano
Cannabis.
Course, we already did something on this order. The editors got
calls that some of their readers had driven clear down to our remote
regions here only to find … well, an empty storefront half
lost to encroaching blackberry vines. Half of em ran out of gas before
they could find their way back to the Colton Harris-Moore Memorial
Bridge. I seriously doubt they’ll be back to this sunny end
of the island, I don’t care how many of those glass balls we hide
Folks apparently believe what they read. When the Cracker ran
the issue on the new Alpaca Hunting season regulations, holy
moly, you might suppose it would be fairly obvious only a Fiend
of the Worst Sort (or the figment of a very sick writer’s imagination)
would purchase a license down at Elger Bay Store, dress up
in llama camouflage and crawl on his beer belly across blackberry
razor wire to sneak up on these poor cute defenseless little critters,
I don’t care HOW good they taste on the grill.
The Cracker could photoshop Big Foot behind the plaza, Colton
in a Cessna over Mabana, Bin Laden quaffing a pint of Industrial
IPA at Diamond Knot, the South End String Band playing Benaroya
--- and folks would just naturally believe their eyes. Not simply because
the Cracker is a bastion of journalistic professionalism with
all their sources checked and double checked, but we’ve just become
folks who either believe everything or believe nothing.
On the internet April Fool is everyday. The political e-mails and
pundits’ blogs that spread faster than bird flu pandemic rumors
are more and more outrageous, most of them outright lies if anyone
bothered to fact-check. You either buy it hook line and stinker
or you walk away shaking your fist vowing never to believe ANY
of this stuff.
So in all honesty I just can’t be a party anymore to the Crab Cracker’s
misguided (even if humorously intended) attempt at public
deception this last issue before their sale to the Stanwood/Camano
News. And when the new owners vow complete journalistic
integrity, I hope you know Skeeter’s going to be 100% honest
in his reporting. And it won’t have one iota to do with my new
raise from these really great new editors. You have my word. As
any who know me can attest, my word is my bond. And I’m not
talking bail.
Bridge Wing Photography
The image of the eagle on the cover of this edition was photographed
by Adam Christopherson. The bald eagle was perched
atop the cross on the historic Lutheran Church in Conway. “That
photo is called Dora the original explorer... A woman named Dora
Tronsdal’s family donated that Cross and Crown as a Memorial to
her. When her daughter Amy Carl saw the photo, she contacted
me right away to order copies for her and her children. Dora has
a nest next to the river right behind the Church.” – Adam Christopherson,
Bridge Wing Photography. Bridge Wing Photography
was started by Adam & Jenny Christopherson on Camano Island
after Adam spent 20 years of service in the U.S. Navy. Adam has
been an avid photographer since his first picture of Deception
Pass when he was 8 years old. His passion for photography was renewed
in the Navy aboard the USS Ingraham on two Middle East
deployments. He spent time teaching sailors how to take photos
while at sea and posting the photos for the crew to send home to
their families. Wildlife photography, especially birds, is a favorite
subject for Adam and his sons Kody and Jacob. Landscapes and
old structures are other items he searches for on his journeys, as
well as people and outdoor activities. Jennifer is the backbone
of the company. She uses her artistic skills in photo editing and
IT to keep everything going, while maintaining a house, being a
teacher, and staying active in the community.
The Camano Traffic Safety Coalition
was started in 2011 by Cam Aynoe and Stan Woode out of concern
for their families’ safety on Camano Island. In late 2010, they met
with a few friends, law enforcement personnel, EMT medics, and
local state senators and county representatives to devise a plan to
make Camano Island a safer place to live. Based on the successful
nationwide Traffic Signal Strategic Placement Plan (TSSPP), they
made plans to incorporate a grander model in their home town
of Camano Island. The group engineered a map (pictured above)
with local electricians and state representatives that shows the
current approved locations of traffic lights to be installed on Camano
Island. It is due to start implementation in August 2013. “We
feel that the addition of these traffic lights will dramatically slow
the speed of traffic on the Island and will greatly reduce injuries
and deaths to our citizens,” said Cam at a recent public hearing.
Stan added that the slowing of traffic would also increase tourism
as people would be better able to view the beauty of Camano
Island at slower traffic speeds. More info on the new plan can be
found at www.saferoncamaner.org.
Hot Cross Buns
Tradition on Good Friday...One a’ penny, two a’ penny, Hot cross buns!
INGREDIENTS: 2 (1/4 oz. ea.) pkg. active dry yeast, 1/4 c. warm water
(110° to 115°), 1 c. warm evaporated milk (110° to 115°), 1/2 c. sugar,
1/4 c. unsalted butter, room temperature, 2 eggs, 2 tsp. salt, 1 tsp.
ground cinnamon, 1/4 tsp. ground allspice, 4-1/2 to 5 c. all-purpose
flour, 1 c. dried currants or raisins, 1 egg white, lightly beaten; Icing:
1-3/4 cups confectioners’ sugar, 2 tsp. unsalted butter, room temperature,
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, 4 to 6 teaspoons milk
DIRECTIONS: In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let
stand 5 minutes. Add milk, sugar, butter, eggs, salt, cinnamon,
allspice and 4 cups flour. Beat until smooth. Stir in currants and
enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. Turn onto a floured
surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in
a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a
warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. Punch dough down. Cover
and let rest for 10 minutes. On a lightly floured surface, roll out to
1/2-inch thickness. Cut with a floured 2-1/2-inch biscuit cutter.
Place 2-inches apart on lightly greased baking sheets. Cover and
let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes. Brush with egg white. Bake
at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove
from pans to wire racks to cool completely. For icing: Combine confectioners’
sugar, butter, vanilla and enough milk to achieve piping
consistency. Pipe a cross on top of each bun. Yield: 2 dozen rolls.
Apricot Glazed Spiral Ham
“Sweet on the outside, savory on the inside, truly something special
for your next family gathering!”
INGREDIENTS: 1 (7-12 lb.) precooked bone-in ham, Glaze: 1 c. apricot
preserves, 1/4 c. orange marmalade, 2 T. orange juice, 1/2 tsp.
ground cinnamon, 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Place ham in a roasting
pan. Ham should be flat-side down. Cover tightly with aluminum
foil to help retain moisture. Bake 12-15 minutes per pound or until
heated through (approx. 2 hours). Do not overcook. Meanwhile, in
a saucepan, stir together glaze ingredients. Bring to a boil, lower
heat and simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. When ham has
baked two hours, remove foil and brush or spoon prepared glaze
over ham and between slices, continue doing so every 10 minutes
while baking for an additional 30 minutes. Remove ham from
oven, cover and let stand 10 minutes before serving.
Keep the kids happy & hoppy this Easter with this easy craft.
Jello Eggs with Cream Cheese Filling
Jiggly jello Easter eggs, what could be more fun Recipe by: Stirring Up
Memories, Dusty Hutchins- McNutt.
Eggs: (Makes 3 whole jello eggs, or 6 halves), 3 oz. pkg. of jello, any
flavor, 1 1/4 c. boiling water. Lightly spray egg mold (available at
hobby stores) with non-stick cooking spray. Snap mold together
and set it on a small tray to catch any spills. Combine jello and boiling
water together; stir for 3 minutes until the jello is completely
dissolved. Slowly pour mixture into 3 whole eggs (or 6 halves).
Repeat as many times as you like, with as many jello flavors you
like, until all your eggs are filled. Chill for at least 4 hours. When
you’re ready to unmold the eggs, slowly pry the mold halves apart
(I use a butter knife to gently coax the halves apart). Using a sharp
chef’s knife, cut the eggs in half lengthwise using one continuous
motion. Next use a melon ball tool to make a well in the large end
of each egg half. Vanilla Filling: (Makes enough to fill about 24 egg
halves): 8 oz. cream cheese, room temperature, 1/2 c. sugar, 1 tsp.
vanilla, 1/8 tsp. salt, 1/2 c. heavy cream. In a mixing bowl, cream together
the cream cheese, sugar, vanilla, and salt until smooth. Add
the heavy cream and whip until stiff peaks form. Put the cream
cheese filling into a pastry bag that has been fitted with a star tip
and pipe the filling into the egg halves. Chill until ready to serve.
BACKYARD HABITAT STEWARD TRAINING
OFFERS GREAT OPPORTUNITIES
Snohomish Conservation District and the National Wildlife Federation
are offering a Habitat Steward Training in Stanwood in Spring
2013. The program provides a host of great speakers, interesting
field trips and the opportunity to complete a community project
with the support of local experts. The program’s goal is to train volunteers
to mentor children; work with schools and local groups;
and restore, maintain and create wildlife habitat. Class participants
will learn the basics of providing food, water, cover and habitat for
wildlife to raise their young. Local experts will teach about native
plants, streams and wetlands, adding perch poles and more. The
Habitat Stewards program is a great opportunity to give back to
your community, meet new people, and learn more about wildlife
and their needs. The classes will be held on April 10, 17, 24, & May
1 from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM at the Stanwood PUD, 9124 271st NW.
The Oyster Egg Hunt of 1888
Back in 1888, food was scarce and money scarcer, so it was hard
for parents to justify coloring and hiding eggs, which could make
meal or sold for household income. So when Easter fell on April
1 in 1888, local resourceful parents decided to join forces and alter
the holiday traditions a bit. Gathering once-plentiful oysters
from Port Susan, the parents painted them different colors, and
hid them around the homestead. They would tell their kids that
the Great Blue Heron had come in the night and hidden the eggs,
which the children were urged to gather and place in the pot for a
hearty oyster stew at dinner. However, so many “oyster eggs” were
forgotten in locations like in back of the wood stove, cabins were
often abandoned until the stink wore off, which could take weeks.
Prepare now for emergencies
High tides, high winds, and waterfront living can spell trouble. This
past year’s storm caused severe damage to waterfront homes on
Camano Island. If these are accompanied by high winds, it could
spell trouble for waterfront land owners. Be prepared. In the mid-
December storm of 2012, high winds caused a “storm surge, ” blew
the tidal waters over bulkheads and damaged property. Unfortunately,
in that scenario, predictions for the direction of the wind
changed, and homeowners who bore the brunt of this event
had little warning. Those with emergency plans already in place
were better prepared despite the lack of warning. Waterfront homeowners
in particular need to be ready for storms. Sandbags,
sand, and plastic sheeting can be purchased in advance at local
stores, and rental pumps, pumping service providers, and water
clean-up contractors are listed in the yellow pages of the phone
book. Additional flood and other hazard preparedness information
can be found at the Island County Department of Emergency
Management website: http://tinyurl.com/ayxmqae. Having a plan
and being prepared is usually much less costly than recovery and
clean-up. Additional preparedness information can be found at
the county’s website: http://tinyurl.com/ayxmqae.
Rare sea creature in crab pot
Randy Heagle hauled in a heavy crabpot off Utsalady, expecting to
find it full of crabs, but was immediately surprised to find a strange
creature inside that he had never seen before. He took the strange
fish to a zoologist friend who lives in Stanwood and it was later
proven to be a Ghiorgolourex, commonly called a “Siphon Shark.”
According to scientists, only 3 have been seen since its first discovery
off the coast of Chile in 1865. None had ever been seen in the
United States until Randy’s capture.
Generations ago, when the Lions Club members first began decorating
the Hamilton Smokestack, Stanwood had not yet become
electrified, so volunteers created elaborate holiday-themed candleabra
out of wrought iron and hoisted them to the top of the
smokestacks for the enjoyment of folks who lived in the area. This
was particularly difficult for the volunteers, though, as the smokestack
was functioning at the time, and they had to send someone
up the smokestack each evening to light the candles.
Trial Ferry Run across Saratoga Passage
Susanna Mantis, owner of Z’s in Stanwood, is photographed here
traveled between Clinton on Whidbey Island, and Maple Grove
ferry fleet, is making trial runs across Whidbey Island and Camano
Maple Grove has been in the planning stages of providing
Quicksand at Camano Island State Park
A new sign has recently been planted at a northern portion of Camano
Island State Park. Millions of years of ocean tides hitting the
beach has caused slight shifts on the earth’s crust plates. Now a
more liquid layer composed of ocean water and tiny sand particles
have caused a natural “sinkhole” to develop under the beach sand.
Many people have complained about getting stuck and one dog
had disappeared completely. The new sign has been placed indefinitely
to warn people from walking into the unsafe zone.
Low Tide Exposes Cold War Secret
Did you know that Stanwood made military precautions against
Russia and Communist allies during the 1980s This photo above
may look like old pilings to the naked eye, but after closer inspection
you can see that they are indeed not. At extremely low
tides, you can walk to the base of the posts and you can clearly
see marked metal tags with the inscription, “SNOHOMISH CTY_US
ARMY_85_ANTI-SUBMERSIBLE #6843.” According to city documents
found at the Stanwood Library, those labels mean that
in 1985, Snohomish County was granted from the U.S. Army an
anti-submarine “net”. A large metal mesh net spanned the bay
and other water channels around Stanwood and Camano Island
to prevent Russian submarines from traveling close to land. Few
remaining evidence of those nets can be found anywhere in Washington.
One is located here at 19730 Soundview Dr NW, Stanwood,
My Roof Leaks, Can I Stop Paying Rent
“So the pot used to collect the rain water from your leaky roof is full
again and you have had it. You’ve asked the landlord numerous
times to come fix the problem but your complaints fall on deaf ears.
Can you stop paying rent until the problem is fixed Nope. “Why
that’s unfair” you say. Perhaps but that’s the law. There are remedies
available to the tenant under such circumstances, however.
The question revolves around the severity of the problem within the
home or apartment. First, the law (RCW 59.19.080) states that the
tenant cannot avail him/herself of the remedies available if the rent
has not been paid. Therefore, payment of rent is a prerequisite to
the protections of the statute. Now if the tenant has paid his/her rent
in full, what can you do in a situation where your living conditions
are untenable and the landlord ignores you RCW 59.18.070 sets
forth the responsibilities of the landlord IF THE TENANT GIVES PROP-
ER NOTICE. You notice the caps I’m sure. Proper notice is written
notice that: (1) specifies the premises involved, (2) gives the name of
the owner if you know, and (3) spells out the nature of the defective
condition. There you go. Make a copy for yourself and deliver or
mail it to the property manager or owner. So how long does a tenant
have to wait after such a notice is given to have the problem fixed
It depends upon the severity of the problem. The statute sets forth
3 scenarios: (1) If there is no hot or cold water, heat, or electricity,
or the problem is imminently hazardous to life, the landlord has 24
hours to fix the problem; (2) the landlord has 72 hours to make the
repairs if the condition deprives the tenant of the use of a refrigerator,
range, and oven, or a major plumbing fixture; and (3) not more
than 10 days for all other reasons. Now if the landlord fails to rectify
the problem after written notice and after the above time periods
have elapsed the tenant may terminate the rental agreement or undertake
to have the work performed and deduct it from the rent so
long as the sum for repairs does not exceed 2 months rental. There
are certain additional conditions that must be met if the tenant is
taking it upon him/herself to have repairs made, such as providing
the landlord with a written estimate at the time of the notice. If a
tenant is going to go this route an attorney should be contacted to
insure that the notice procedures are done properly. There is no reason
to be saddled with a home that has a defective condition. Just
make sure you abide by the rules when seeking repairs..”
Rock Crab shell miracle cure
Over 1 million people have already tried the miraculous qualities
of the outer shell of the Rock Crab (commonly found in Northwest
waters including Camano and Stanwood). Boil the outer shell of
the crab with lemon juice, Frianco spice, Biotechrociycline (found
at Bartell Drugs and other drug stores), and dehydrated Honiciferous
herbs for 5 hours. Strain the liquid into a a stainless steel container
and cool for 24 hours. Drinking this new elixir causes specific
mind-altering chemical synapses that benefit the human body.
These chemical imbalances trigger responses from your brain into
making you believe whatever you want just before drinking the
juice. Essentially, you only have to think about what you want, immediately
drink the “Brain Juice,” (as it is commonly called) and
your mind will make you believe that what you want, to come true.
So if you wanted to lose weight and avoid eating, you could drink
a small amount of the liquid and your mind would “tell” you that
you were already full. If you suffered from insomnia, after drinking,
you could make your body believe that you were exhausted and
you could quickly fall asleep. This miracle cure causes no side effects
common to other hallucinatory chemicals and illegal drugs
and has been deemed safe by the International Health & Safety
Agency. However, April Narren, the personal consultant of the
agency, warns that improperly concocting the liquid can cause
physical discomfort including extreme itching under the armpits,
dry scalp, and tingling eyelids that can last for days. “It is best to
find local professionals who are skilled enough to create the proper
balance of ingredients,” said Mrs. Narren. “Being surrounded by
waters containing Rock Crab and educating myself on the process
of creating Brain Juice, has made me certified to produce a safe
product for your consumption,” says Jo Ker from Stanwood Homeopathy
& Wellness, 259-A Cedarhome Drive. Jo also says that this is
not an actual “cure” as your body is only “tricked”. This is only a temporary
state and is not intended for long durations. Go to www.
CrabCure2013.com for more information on “Brain Juice” and for
other health warnings and cures, including statements from other
local professionals.
Tripod Whale makes visit to Kayak Point
A Tripod Whale, commonly seen deep in the Pacific, but not usually
so close to shore or human proximity, was recently photographed
across from the picnic shelters of Kayak Point County Park. The
whale (closely related to the Gray Whale and Humpback Whale) is
named for its three fins. Two of them are used to propel the animal
forward and the third fin serves as a type of “rudder.” Tripod whales
are migrating from their winter calving grounds in northern Canada
to their summer feeding grounds in South America. They usually
travel hundreds of miles from shore to feed on cold-water fish,
but occasionally they can be spotted close to land along the west
coast of the United States. Washington typically serves as a rest
stop on their annual journey. Though, according to various websites,
a Tripod Whale traveling so deep into Puget Sound is most
likely ill, dying, or in some state of dementia. According to Benjamin
Theodoreson, chief oceanographer of the scientific vessel
“Clawdeagan”, only about 750 Tripod Whales (Tripodae Cetacea)
exist today. – Photo by Elizabeth Lobe.
Fishing
Report
“Blackmouth fishing the past 2 weeks has still been fairly good; especially
considering that the flurry of windstorms we’ve had have
has been cooperative, keepers and natives alike have been caught
in front of the State Park, as far north as Onamac and down at the
1) Beginning April 1, the annual limit of White Sturgeon has been
reduced from 5 to just 2! They say its because the Sturgeon are
being over harvested yet we recreational anglers account for less
than 5% of the Sturgeon deaths annually; 90% of them are killed by
the invasive sea lions that sit at the dams on the Columbia where
the Sturgeon are easy pickings yet the only solution Fish & Wildlife
can come up with is to limit our season again and again because
the sea lions are “hands off”. I personally find it very frustrating that
facts are being ignored in preference to emotions and we are working
so hard to save one species at the expense of other species
which actually provide us with food sources(Sturgeon & Salmon
being the biggest two), but that’s just my humble opinion.
The Crab
Cracker is
100%
LOCAL
(and is
printed in
Snohomish
County)
2) On a brighter note, the State has allocated more days to recreational
Shrimpers in the Puget Sound by moving the Commercial
Shrimpers up to the San Juans. We should get between 3 and 5
days this year instead of the 1 or 2 that we’ve been getting. This
year, don’t forget to make Elger Bay Grocery your local source for
Shrimp Gear, Bait and the new Scotty Pot Pullers that are in stock
now!
Lastly, don’t forget that your 2012 fishing license expires at the end
of March so you’ll need to buy a new license before you hit the
water in April. Support your local economy this year and get your
license from either us, Huntington’s or Camano Marine.
