Power Past Coal Concert
The Muse in Conway will host a special “Power Past Coal” concert
and workshop featuring guitarist singer/songwriter Dana Lyons at
7 pm. Well-known for lyrics on environmental topics, Dana Lyons
is touring and speaking out in communities from Billings to Bellingham
along the route of the coal export trains that will serve the
proposed Cherry Point Bellingham coal export terminal. At each
event, attendees learn how they can raise questions or concerns
to the EPA before the January 21 comment deadline. Communities
large and small are becoming alarmed about the impact on local
traffic of 18 mile-long coal trains per day, as well as the impact of
the terminal in Bellingham on sensitive marine species in Bellingham
Bay and our Salish Sea. The event is sponsored by Power Past
STANWOOD SONS OF NORWAY DINNER &
CULTURAL NIGHT
6pm Social / Get Acquainted Time. Baked Potato Bar and Salad
served at 6:30pm. Followed by Installation of Officers for 2013 &
2014. Followed by the Cultural Program: the Falun-Roros Expedition.
For over a thousand years they trudged through the winter
landscape. Fur-clad men urged their horses on as they pulled the
heavily laden sleds along the winter trail. There were no roads, no
railways, just the one-horse drawn sleds that glided through the
snowy heavy loads of iron and iron goods to Trondheim, and from
there out into the world. In February of 2003, 30 men and women
with 17 horses and sleds relived 18 days of this historic trade route
experience from Falun to Røros – the original half-way point in the
trail drive to Trondheim. We will view a beautifully filmed 28 minute
documentary of that trip and have some time to discuss it. For
FISHING TIPS
Fish Smart
This article is designed to help all anglers increase the survival rate of
fish they catch & release and thereby increase populations and our
ability to fish recreationally for generations to come.
Strange
fact:
The Beatles
song “Dear
Prudence” was
written about
Mia Farrow’s
sister, Prudence,
when
she wouldn’t
come out and
play with Mia
and the Beatles
at a religious
retreat in India.
General guidelines for releasing marine recreational fish:
* Plan ahead: pack the gear needed to release fish before you go
on your trip.
* Avoid encountering fish that you are required to release or don’t
want to keep; Change location or tactics.
* Use tackle suited to the size of fish you hope to catch.
* Don’t play fish to exhaustion; use higher # test line to minimize
playing time.
* Land fish as quickly as possible and leave them in the water if
you intend to release them. Knotless/rubberized landing nets and
gloves help protect a fish’s slime layer. Support their body when
lifting.
* Carry release tools when fishing.
* Release fish as quickly as possible; the less time out of water,
the better.
* Do your homework. More information on increasing survival
rates can be found at www.fishsmart.org
FISHING
REPORT
“Fishing has been pretty slow for the past month, even when
people have dared to brave the weather. Very few fish have been
weighed into our derby and they have been pretty small. Hopefully
it will pick up in January.
Crabbing is closed as of press time and will not be open again until
Summer; don’t forget to turn in those Winter catch record cards so
we don’t have to charge you $10 when you renew your license!”
Fresh from
the farm
Strange
fact:
A donkey
will sink in
quicksand but
a mule won’t.
Puttering
“We all know what it is. We all know how to do it. But we don’t. Or
at least not enough. It is Grandpa in the garden; it is Grandma in
the kitchen. It’s Dad in the garage and Mom in the sewing room.
It is working on those things which are not mission critical but
make life so much nicer. Maybe it’s a latch to hold open the gate
or a patch on a pair of pants. Maybe it’s a new plum tree along the
road or a plate of warm cookies when we come in from the cold.
Whatever the result, it is when we rediscover our personal pace
in the great scheme of things. It is when we let go of the urgent
and do the pleasant. It is those isolated moments when the waves
of the “I ought” subside and we get to what’s really important, to
the things which improve the quality of life. Have you ever noticed
that the really important things in life we do at a different speed
than those that are required of us If it is really, really important, we
slow down and do it carefully, thoughtfully, and with great pleasure.
It may be tidying up the workbench from the rush of finishing
gifts for Christmas. But when the place is cleaned up and the
screws and wood put in place, the pleasure is real and we’re ready.
Ready for the new year and with the emotional reserves reloaded
for all the turmoil and tumult that other people’s schedules dump
in our lives. So putter on, good friends. It’s an old tradition we can
carry into the new year with head held high and live longer for the
doing. – Happy Hoeing by Jon Stevens, Open Gate Farm
Moonshine
Wisdom & Wit
R.I.P
By Jack Archibald
“Right on the heels of Super Storm Sandy we get breaking news of
yet another disaster. We’ll recover from the hurricane, we’ll rebuild
in the end, we’ll be stronger. But … what can replace Twinkies Or
Snowballs The iconic aptly named Wonder Bread All gone. All
gone broke.
The news coverage was frightening enough. The reality will be
much harder to digest. Maybe not harder than a Twinkie itself,
but hard. Very hard. The never-say-die addicts were stocking up
on the remaining supplies. Stores reported runs on the Hostess
shelves. Shopping carts were piled to overflowing with their sugar
mainline. The wise ones will meter the snacks over months, even
years. No worry about spoilage. The expiration dates are well beyond
any living consumers’ puny lifespans. But there will come a
day when the preservative drenched snack treats are gone, yet another
extinction on our fragile planet.
I’ve been hearing rumors that corporate scientists are exploring
cloning options. The conspiracy theorists claim that those
consumers loading up their fallout shelters were actually federal
geneticists, stockpiling secret laboratories underneath the Rocky
Mountains, working furiously to duplicate the chemical composition
of the undead Twinkies. Obviously it’s a race against time and
the limited storehouse of high fructose-depleted Hoarders.
The cynics, as always, see a silver lining in the nutritional stormclouds.
The inevitable drop in diabetes will free up dialysis machines,
sure, but they forget the determination of an Elger Bay
Store consumer. Already sales in Pop Tarts and Captain Crunch
are buoying a despondent chemical industry. The savvy consumer
may stuff his shelter, but the savvy investor will stuff his stock portfolio
with Dow, Monsanto and ArcherDanielMidland. I’ll tell you
this: artificial food is here to stay. So here’s today’s insider trading
tip. Skip the Powerball ticket, kiddo, and call your broker. BET on
Ring in the New Year with a new twist on romantic comedy! Local
author Mary Ann Hayes releases her second novel, first in The
Mischief Chronicles series entitled, A Friend Like Frank. Everyone
needs a friend like Frank as Stephanie Sinclair discovers in this
mainstream women’s novel about two people who meet under
the most unlikely of circumstances. Frank has a past he’s changed
his name to forget and Stephanie has developed a bad habit that
could land her in trouble with the law as well as alienate her from
her long time circle of friends. Award winning author, Mary E.
Trimble, says …”A Friend Like Frank, is a fun, lively comedy that
keeps you guessing. A finely crafted novel with sparkling dialog
that makes you feel like you’re tagging along with the characters.”
Mary Ann Hayes lives on Camano Island with her husband of 35
years and their two dogs. “I have always been amazed by great
story telling, which is why I love fiction and why I love to write it. I
love the telling of a great story!”
Parental Liability
“So it’s time for you and your spouse to go out and have a lovely dinner
together. It’s been awhile since you have done that and the two of
you need a break from the kids. You’ve planned this for a few weeks
now but on the given night, with reservations made at a fine Italian
dining establishment, the baby sitter is diagnosed with a rare social
disease. You had never used her in the past so your concerns about
that issue are non-existent, but now what No other sitters are available
on such short notice except those recommend by the, now hospitalized,
sitter. You’ve looked forward to this for some time now and
junior has to learn some social skills, so you begrudgingly decide to
take him along. Just prior to leaving junior has been sitting in front of
the TV for hours watching a marathon of Three Stooges movies. So off
you go. Thirty minutes later you arrive at the restaurant. It’s elegant.
The maître ‘d eyes your son with skepticism and politely requests that
he leave his electronic toy machine gun at the front desk. You gracefully
oblige. You are escorted to the table and seated. A few moments
later an elderly couple are about to be seated next to you. Your son,
in an unbelievable show of gentlemanliness and courtesy stands and
commences to seat the elderly woman. All are impressed. Unfortunately,
instead of pushing her seat under her he, with flashes of Moe
Howard fresh in his memory, he pulls the chair out from under her.
She falls and breaks her tail bone. As you are escorted out of the restaurant
by two men with no necks, your son asks for his gun back. The
two men smile. The woman’s medical bills, pain and suffering, and lost
wages exceed half a mill. Are you liable Let’s try it again. Across the
street your new neighbor built a gigantic mansion that totally obligated
your view of the Stilli Valley and the river beyond. Your daughter, a
promising young baseball star, puts one through the window of your
neighbor’s gigantic plate glass window and breaks a priceless vase
that once graced Napoleon’s living room. It will cost $2,500 to replace
the window and the vase was, well, obliterated. Are you liable for the
damages The first story represents a classic law school case. At one
time the rule was that parent/s were not responsible for the negligent
acts of their children, unless, the child had a propensity for bad behavior
in the past and the parent/s knew it and did nothing to control
the child. This rule has been changed somewhat in Washington State.
Under present Washington law if (1) the child is under 18 and (2) living
with the parent/s, and (3) the act is willful or malicious, the parent/s
are liable up to $5,000. In the first scenario the parent/s should call
their insurance company and see if they have coverage. Most likely
they will not because the act on the part of junior was intentional and
insurance companies generally will not cover intentional acts. But call
them anyway and report it. As an aside junior will more than likely be
offered employment with the restaurant’s owner within a few years.
He’ll need to keep his options open. In the second case, much to your
delight, you are not liable because the act was not intentional. Unless
you directed her to put it through the window (which would be both
willful and malicious, and perhaps add you to the list of defendants)
it would be considered an accident and the parent/s would not be
liable. Your insurance company would most likely pay the damages
in this instance much to your chagrin. Keep one final thing in mind. If
junior had pulled a chair out from under others in the past, and you
did not keep an eye on him in the restaurant when another was sitting
down, you may be on the hook for improper supervision. Personally,
I’d call the baby sitter back.”
Strange fact:
The term “the whole 9 yards” came from WWII fighter pilots in the South Pacific.
When arming their airplanes on the ground, the .50 caliber machine gun ammo belts
measured exactly 27 feet, before being loaded into the fuselage. If the pilots fired all
their ammo at a target, it got “the whole 9 yards.”
Twice-a-Month Basis
Safe Harbor Free Clinic, a state-of-the-art walk-in clinic providing
professional health care and referral services to uninsured and under-insured
month as of Saturday, Dec. 1 and accepts patients by appointment
Camano Road Shop Supervisor Retires
after 36 Years
Dale Tepley has been with Island County Public Works for 36 years
– all of that time has been serving the Camano community. What is
particularly impressive is Dale’s continued commitment to the job.
Throughout his career, Dale has taken his position very seriously and
it shows in the condition of the road system. The Camano Road Shop
hired Dale as a Truck Driver back in 1976. By the next year he was
promoted to an Equipment Operator. He continued to work his way
up and became a Foreman in 1983. Dale was promoted to Supervisor
in 1991 and has held that position for the last 22 years. As Supervisor,
Dale oversees a staff that varies seasonally between 10 – 14 people.
The Supervisor has numerous responsibilities ranging from assigning
and coordinating tasks, evaluating roads for projects and resurfacing,
and responding to citizen concerns. People may not realize that the
position of Road Shop Supervisor is a 24 hour a day job, every day
of the week. Many times Dale has received calls in the middle of the
night to respond to emergencies, and every time Dale has responded
promptly and appropriately. Throughout the years, there has always
had to be some sharing of personnel and of equipment among the
four County Road Shops. As the budgets have gotten tighter, this
sharing has dramatically increased and become even more critical.
Dale is a ‘Team Player’ in that he is always willing to work with the
other Road Shops to get things done. Dale has long time ties to the
Camano area. He moved to western Washington as a young boy and
graduated from Stanwood High School. Before coming to work at
Island County, he served in Viet Nam. When he returned he worked
nights at Weyerhauser and attended the Everett Community College.
Dale met his wife, Marcie, on Camano Island. They have two daughters
and a son that all graduated from Stanwood High School. The public is
invited to celebrate Dale Tepley’s retirement on Tuesday, January 15th
at 1 pm at the Camano Road Shop.
Together We Read
The Stanwood-Camano Together We Read Committee announces
that they have selected author Garth Stein’s book The Art of Racing
in the Rain as the book for the 2013 Stanwood Camano Together We
Read project. The objective of Together We Read is to engage the
community by sharing one book. The committee felt The Art of Racing
in the Rain, published in 2008 by HarperCollins would appeal to
people of all ages and all walks of life. Booklist selected The Art of
Racing in the Rain as the 2008 Editors’ Choice - Adult Fiction for Young
Adults, and Kirkus Reviews described the novel as “pointedly inspirational.”
The Art of Racing in the Rain is a touching story told through
the voice of an old soul of a dog called Enzo who reflects on his life
with Denny Swift and his family and their hardships. Stein is a dynamic,
engaging speaker who was raised in Seattle and then returned to
Seattle after living in New York for 18 years. He also has written four
other novels. The Art of Racing in the Rain is in the Sno-Isle Libraries
collection and available at local bookstores. As part of the Together
We Read project, Stein will appear at 6 p.m. Feb. 1 at an event for the
community at the Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center, 27130 - 102nd Ave.
NW, Stanwood, WA, and at the Stanwood High School at an event for
area teens. This is the fifth year of Together We Read, a community
reading program that offers author events focused around one book
to inspire discussion and celebration of reading and literature on a
community level. The majority of the funding comes from local organizations,
including the Stanwood/Camano Friends of the Library,
Camano Island Friends of the Library, Kohl’s, Humanities Washington,
and the Sno-Isle Libraries Foundation. Last year’s author events drew
77 people and more than 94 high school students. The committee
expects this year’s selection will interest even more people. For more
Puget Sound sport crabbing closed
Winter catch reports due by Feb. 1. Puget Sound marine areas for
recreational winter crabbing closed on Dec. 31. All sport crabbers
licensed to fish for crab in the Sound will have until Feb. 1 to report
their winter catch. State fishing rules require that all sport crabbers
with winter catch record cards submit catch reports for the winter
season to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW)
by Feb. 1 - even if they did not catch any crab. All Puget Sound marine
areas will be closed to recreational crabbing until summer 2013. Sport
crabbers should be aware that if they fail to submit a winter catch report,
they will receive a $10 fine when they purchase their 2013 crab
endorsement, said Rich Childers, WDFW shellfish policy lead. “By submitting
their catch data, crabbers play an important role in managing
the Puget Sound crab fishery,” Childers said. “We need to hear from
everyone who was issued a winter catch card - including from those
who didn’t catch any crab.” To submit catch reports, crabbers may
send their catch record card to WDFW by mail or file their report on a
special webpage on the department’s licensing website. The mailing
address is WDFW CRC Unit, 600 Capitol Way N., Olympia, WA 98501-
New Book Groups at Camano Island
Library
“If you’re passionate about a book, there’s nothing better than having
a lively group discussion about it! says Camano Island library’s
Mary Jennings. Based on patron input, the library is starting two
new book groups in early 2013. The adult group is being formed
due to many requests from library users for a forum to discuss titles
that have piqued their interest, Jennings said. The first title will be
the Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol. All are invited to join in on
January 7, from 5-6 pm at the Camano Island Library. This group will
meet the first Monday each month. A parent-child book group will
gather group on the second Tuesday each month at 5 pm, beginning
February 12. The first title will be Betty Smith’s A Tree Grows
in Brooklyn. This discussion group is being created in response to
parents of children, usually between the ages of 10-14, who’ve
voiced a need for finding material that meets the reading level of
their child but contains age-appropriate material. Jennings, with
20 years of book group experience, will facilitate both gatherings.
“It’s such a wonderful way to hear what others think; it’s also is the
best way to meet folks who love books,” stated Jennings. All titles
selected by the new Camano Island book groups will be available
through the Sno-Isle catalog, including in eBook format. Patrons
are especially encouraged to attend the initial meetings. Ms. Jennings
stated, “During the first meeting of each group we will select
titles for the next 4 or 5 months. Contact the Camano Island Library
Pilot Project at 360-387-3150 or stop in.”
Pogo-Nip
“One of my favorite words to describe a winter weather condition
is pogonip, which is a freezing fog. Many dictionaries credit it as
being specific to the Pacific Northwest States, but most agree it is
certainly a phenomenon of only the Western part of the United
States. You don’t hear it used very often, which is a shame. Not only
is it a lot of fun to say, but once you have experienced it, you will
be quite sure your pogo has been nipped, giving it an eloquence
most words lack. Here is the story of the word and its Shoshone
origins, from Houghton Mifflin’s International Word Origins: from
Shoshone This word originated in United States. It’s a clear, cool
evening in a mountain valley of western Nevada. Heat absorbed
from the day’s sunshine is radiating up into space, unhindered by
clouds. As the temperature drops, the amount of water that the
air can hold drops too. If the temperature is above freezing, the
result will be a dense ground fog. If the temperature is below freezing,
there will be tiny droplets of ice, a pogonip or “ice fog.” Why
pogonip Because this unusual weather condition was unfamiliar
to the first English speakers who came upon it. They learned
about it from Shoshone Indians, who had long had a name for it.
It is reported as early as 1865 in a glossary of Indian words from
Montana. An 1879 book published in San Francisco described it
like this: “He observed what he at first supposed to be a huge bank
of dark clouds de” Shoshone is a Uto-Aztecan language still spoken
today by about 2,000 members of the tribe in Nevada, Idaho,
and Wyoming. Although pogonip seems to be the only Shoshone
word in current English, the language played an important role in
an early exploration of the American West by speakers of English. It
was a Shoshone, Sacajawea, wife of interpreter Toussaint Charbonneau,
who turned out to be the most important guide and interpreter
for Lewis and Clark’s expedition of 1803-1806.”
now is the time to start thinking about what you would like to do
about those things. Perhaps you have added a little more weight
Befriend and Tend
(or why women need women friends) by Susanna Mantis
“What is it about women and their girlfriends Why do we need to
talk things out, get different opinions, just have someone listen
Why do we feel so much better when we go for a walk with a friend
Just a few minutes seems to make a world of difference. Keep reading
and you may be surprised by some of my discoveries. An article
from the Mayo Clinic stated that friendships: • Increase your sense
of belonging and purpose • Boost your happiness • Reduce stress •
Improve your self-worth • Decrease your risk of serious mental illness
• Help you weather traumas, such as divorce, serious illness,
job loss or the death of a loved one • Encourage you to change
unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as excessive drinking or lack of exercise.
It is now believed that being with friends can counteract
that intense ache in the stomach many people deal with on a daily
basis. I have seen this stress response often over the 34 years of
listening to people in my business. A 2002 article by Gail Berkowitz
stated that a UCLA study suggested that women actually respond
to stress differently than men, and that women’s brain chemicals
cause us to maintain friendships with other women. Before these
findings, all the research pointed to the “fight or flee” stress response,
because men only were used as their test subjects. Only in
2002, after testing hundreds of female subjects, the study suggests
that women have a larger range than just fight or flee and that they
exhibit behaviors that “tend and befriend”. When the hormone
oxytocin, that’s the feel good chemical in the blood stream, made
by the pituitary gland, is released as part of the stress responses
in a woman, it buffers the fight or flight response and encourages
a woman to tend children and gather with other women instead.
“When she actually engages in this tending or befriending, studies
suggest that more oxytocin is released, which further counters
stress and produces a calming effect. This calming response does
not occur in men” says Dr. Klein, “because testosterone---which men
produce in high levels when they’re under stress---seems to reduce
the effects of oxytocin. Estrogen, she adds, seems to enhance it.”
No wonder women need to talk and connect with other women.
Many studies verify over and over that our human connection; our
ties with others help lower blood pressure, heart rates and even
cholesterol. The last few weeks I have been helping a young friend
of mine with her 6 month old. The mom has re-entered the work
force and her steady support of family was gone for a few weeks,
so I offered. I can’t begin to tell you the joy I felt at caring and being
responsible for this young being. My oxytocin must be humming.
Can you imagine the benefits I feel, let alone my husband Call a
friend today, someone you trust and feel good around, go for a
walk or have a tea together, you will be happy you did.”
Lose Weight Feel Great! Get to the Gym!
It’s the New Year and resolutions abound! Many of us have been
to parties, feasted on bounties of yummy food and our mid-drifts
are showing the joy of every extra morsel! We realize again, knowing
the importance of health and well-being that we need to get
back into our fitness regimens. Why join a gym and what are the
benefits More and more, my clients first come to me and basically
ask, “How can I get in better shape and maintain it” Their definition
of “better shape” could mean weight loss or a higher energy
level to reducing blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure. In
very serious cases, it means recovering from a stroke or heart attack.
The list is endless, but my answer, while surprising is always
the same: Join a gym; get a Personal Trainer and Strength Train!
Skeletal Muscle is your friend!!! Having an effective, safe and properly
designed strength training program can be the solution to improving
your life. Muscle loss with age is called sarcopenia, it is a
term derived from two Latin words “sarco” for muscle and “penia”
for wasting. If we do not use our muscles (use it or lose it principle)
we lose strength and power. Everyday activities such as climbing
stairs or getting up and down out of a chair require muscle
power. Picking up a bag of groceries or kitty litter requires muscle
strength. As you lose muscle and bone with age you increase your
chances for injury and your daily activities in life become more difficult.
The other great benefit of strength training is the ability to
aid in weight loss! It has been reported that even in our 20’s and
more so after the age of 50 we start to lose muscle which has an
effect on our metabolism. Since muscle tissue burns more calories
than fat tissue, having more muscle is your friend if you are trying
to lose weight! At rest someone with a higher muscle to fat ratio
will be burning more calories. According to Exercise Physiologist
William McArdle “one pound of muscle burns 6.5 calories an hour.
Muscles burn 5.5 times more calories than fat, which burns about
1.2 calories per pound an hour.” Wow! That is why so many women
who have struggled with weight loss and body image issues have
conquered them through strength training and a healthy nutritional
plan. Strength training has been compared to yoga with its
abilities to improve mental well-being. Some of the benefits listed
in a recent IDEA Fitness Journal article were improved memory,
self-esteem, cognition, quality of sleep and decreased anxiety, potential
reduction in depression and less chronic fatigue. Strength
training along with cardiovascular (aerobic) exercise i.e. walking,
biking, swimming or running and watching what we eat (yes, nutrition
is important too!) will keep our hearts healthy. Adding other
programs like yoga, martial arts, Pilates, etc. can give us all much
happier, healthier bodies and minds! Many people have not been
in a gym because the thought of it was intimidating. Why Is it the
lack of familiarity with the equipment or is it the mistaken belief
that everyone in the gym is in great shape The truth is, everyone
in the gym is there for the same reason and that is to improve their
health and fitness. Choose a gym where you feel comfortable. Hire
a certified personal trainer to ease your anxiety and design the perfect
program for you. It will speed up your success rate in achieving
your goals! If you need to have accountability…Grab a Friend!
So get to the gym and strength train! Here’s to your success!
oaks, shite is snow for miles around, quiet sounds on the frozen
ground.
Trees draped in the soft glow of winter sparkle like diamonds as a
snowman dressed in a top hat stands guard.”
