WHERE HAS IT GONE
A Reflection by Deb Bell
Warm are the nights and warmer the days
as the last of this season fades slowly away.
School sales blossom in stores across town
as the flowers and lawns quickly shade into brown.
Sports teams at practice and cheerleaders shout
to sharpen their skills to ward off a rout.
Home canners whistle while foods are preserved
for the bounty of summer in winter to serve.
Why is the Summer the season we long for
It seems longer to get here, has the longest of days,
yet the shortest of time we get to go play.
Spring has its place with new growth and wonder
and Fall is the time for which most hunters hunger.
Winter has beauty in new fallen snow
but Summer’s the one we don’t want to let go.
Is it picnics we crave Getting cool by the water
Or a sense of more leisure in weather that’s hotter
Could it be the vacations after long months of planning
Or seeing Aunt Sophie or Gramp’s new Harley
Might camping in forests or hiking long trails
be the fix that one seeks to cure all their ills
Maybe jetting in boats across glistening seas,
or crabbing and clamming makes you weak in the knees.
If there’s still things of Summer you’re waiting to do,
best hop to it quick ‘cause it’s almost all through!
SCHOOL BUS
ROCK
Summer is passing quickly and before we know it, kids will be going back
to school. I respectfully submit these charming photos of a rock painted
like a school bus to be considered for the cover of The Crab Cracker in late
August, or early September. This rock was given to me as a gift from my
sister and it sits on the desk in my office.
“What’s it like to be an artist on Camano Island
I’ll tell you in just one word: Magical
I think there are more artists per square mile here on Camano Island than
anywhere in the known universe. I understand that during our recent census,
the good folks who do the counting, found it necessary to make a
whole ‘nother form just for Camano Island... what’s your medium Acrylic
... watercolour ... oil ... pastel ... syrup What is it that draws artists to
Camano Island There’s something magical about this place, and I’m hot
on the tracks to find out just what it is. While many folks think it is the air,
or the water, I’m here to let you in on a secret... it’s the scent of blueberry
pancakes AND the gauss strength of the magnetic field that was inherent
in the formation of the island. Let me tell you... it’s magical, and it’s...
well... “magical”... all in one swoop...you know, sort of like the swoop you
get when picking up a good dollop of Titanium white to mix with your
Payne’s grey. You know... magical. What’s it like Well, as you waddle out
of the Elger Bay Cafe, after woofing down a short stack of blueberry pancakes,
you’ve got to be careful when you pull out of that precious parking
space... you could get whooped up along the side by another artist in dire
need of some blueberry pancakes or camaraderie with a fellow artist in
search of a good cup of coffee... you can forget all notions of gourmet coffee
Americano, or half-caf, non-fat, low foam latte... it’s coffee. If you want
gourmet, it’s the blueberries that are gourmet. After all of the fuss over
farm raised salmon versus wild salmon, it was only natural that blueberries
were next to be debated. I’m here to tell you that up here folks wouldn’t
put up with second rate berries, so, not to worry, go ahead an order that
stack. I’ve got a theory that sounds pretty good... to me. You see, Camano
Island was formed by glacier till about a Brazilian years ago. There is no
bedrock on Camano Island... yes, there are a couple of Bed & Breakfast’s,
but, no bedrock. I understand that radio communication is “different” here
on the island. The magnetic field or something like that, is ... well, just
“different”... this affects human beings... it makes one cry out for a brush.
What can I say... it’s magical. When one crosses over the Mark Clark bridge,
something magical happens... one gets a craving to paint... and eat blueberry
pancakes. It’s magical, I tell ya.”
Susan Cohen Thompson
This is Thompson’s seventh year living on Camano Island since moving
from the East Coast. “I feel fully Northwest now. Camano Island is more
open than the Massachusetts landscape was. In response, my paintings
are becoming less dense. I have shifted from working primarily in watercolor
to painting in oil on canvas. I am enjoying re-inventing my personal
style with oil paint. The silvery light off the water has connected with my
core. Living next to the State Park has etched the forest deep into my
heart and mind. My statement of interconnectedness with nature remains
a consistent theme.” Susan’s art will be featured as part of “CAMANO
HONORS EARTH”, a collaborative event and art exhibition taking place at
Matzke Fine Art Gallery and Sculpture Park on Camano Island. This exhibition
brings art, environment and community together to celebrate nature.
More info about the event will be posted on the website: www.camanohonorsearth.org.
Thompson opens her studio to the public each year for
the Camano Island Studio Tour in May. You can also visit her studio by
appointment year-round and see some of her works at Matzke Gallery every
weekend. The studio tour is a great event that makes Camano Island a
place where creative visions and the beauty of Earth are brought together
for us to share. It is a delight to have so many of you visit my studio during
the tour. “Thank you!” Visit Susan’s website - www.art-connects-nature.
GLASS TECH
Glass Tech Stanwood, Inc. has been serving Stanwood and Camano since
March 1997. They are coming upon their 15th Anniversary this year!
Owners Aaron and Sue James moved to Stanwood in 1995 from North
Seattle. Sue was working for SeaFirst Bank-Columbia Center Building at
that time. Aaron was a Naval Fire Fighter and after several unsuccessful
knee surgeries was discharged as a Disabled Veteran. He came accross
a “Retail Glass Business for Sale” and thought he might be interested in
a career change. Purchased the name “Glass Tech” and at the same time
the little ol’ building on the corner of 271st and 102nd was available
for lease so thus started the new job change for Aaron! Shortly after
that Sue was laid off her job from Seafirst Bank and was given a generous
severance package and the two have been in their little old building
since that time. The building was at one time a Signal Gas Station
owned by Manser Wangsness. (If the walls could talk!!) Aaron and Sue
enjoy living on Camano Island with their 2 dogs Boomer and Zina. They
recently became grand parents to Ryder Michael Estabrook. Aaron and
Sue have been very fortunate to have such wonderful loyal clients over
their past 15 years. The Stanwood-Camano Community really keeps
their business in town and they are so greatful for that!!
Spartina in Island County
Spartina anglica is a cordgrass that has spread aggressively throughout
Puget Sound since it was innocently introduced by a farmer in 1961. According
to a Washington Department of Agriculture report in 2004, three
counties accounted for 99 percent of the north Puget Sound and Hood
Canal infestations: Island County (35 solid acres), Skagit County (350 solid
acres), and Snohomish County (370 solid acres). Though concentrated in
the north and central Sound, state and county agencies are working with
local organizations and volunteers to help remove the problem before it
spreads to other areas of Puget Sound. Without a natural grazer or predator,
the plant accumulates sediments around it’s roots, and transforms marshes
or mudflats into spartina meadows. Migratory waterfowl, who depend
on a large diversity of native plants, lose important habitats. Commercial
shellfish growers lose valuable shellfish acreage and harms our state’s
economy. Juvenile salmon foraging areas are also disrupted as spartina
colonizes eelgrass meadows affecting commercial and recreational fishing.
Spartina can change the ecosystem of the areas it invades, so that native
plants and animals no longer find it suitable. Besides producing seeds
that float on the water, spartina stores nutrients in large underground root
masses which can withstand efforts at eradication by hand-pulling and
mechanical removal. “Clones” that grow in different parts of an invaded
area can grow to a size where they meet, creating a spartina meadow.
Eradication of spartina is a multi-agency and multiple method process.
One method of removing spartina is hand-pulling, which is particularly
successful with younger plants that are not as established as larger ones.
Various volunteer groups have contributed to this labor-intensive effort.
On a larger scale, spartina is removed by herbicide spraying (air and land),
mowing, and crushing. These methods, usually done by governmental
agencies, often need to be repeated over a three or four year period to be
effective. State, county and tribal groups are all working together to help
eliminate this problem. With a continued multi-part attack on spartina, we
can be hopeful that the problem may be controlled in Island County and
Puget Sound. – Source: Island County Shore Stewards.
The changes
made due to
Labor Day and
the American
labor force in
the 1880s proves
there is much to
be appreciated.
Without this day
and those who
created it, 8 hour
work days and a
minimum wage
would not be possible.
Weekends
also came to be
because of these
Drivers get new gateway to Camano Island
The new SR 532 Camano Island bridge opened to traffic about 6:30 a.m.
Friday, August 13. Before that happened though, crews put in one long,
last night cutting and removing pavement, shifting the road, then paving
and striping to link the new bridge to SR 532. Just as the sun was rising
over the new bridge, the last cars drove over the old bridge and it
was permanently closed to traffic. The bridge is part of a 10-mile SR 532
corridor that carries 20,000 vehicles a day, spans two counties and runs
through the heart of Stanwood. Building the bridge was the largest piece
of the SR 532 corridor project that will help improve safety, reduce choke
points and preserve important transportation infrastructure along SR 532.
This new bridge has wider lanes and shoulders, is built to current earthquake
standards, has a lower profile to provide better sight distance, and
has improved stormwater treatment to make it more environmentally
friendly. Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen led the group to officially cut the
ribbon on the new bridge on Wednesday, Aug. 11. She took time to recognize
Lenore Moa who cut the ribbon on the old bridge 50 years ago.
Many nodded heads as she recounted driving over the really old bridge
with all its bumps. Remarks by local elected officials at the ceremony were
followed by the unveiling of four steel sculptures depicting wildlife that
will be mounted at each corner of the new bridge. Contractor Parsons-
Kuney, Joint Venture funded the sculptures in coordination with a donation
from two local non-profits: the Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation
and the Camano Arts Association. Even though the new bridge is open
to traffic, work near the bridge is far from over. Crews will spend the next
several weeks stripping overhang brackets and wood frames from the
bottom of the new bridge deck and piers, and continue demolishing the
old bridge. One more layer of asphalt will be added to the new bridge
approaches in September, after we are further along with the demolition
work. Demolition will take about two months, and then crews will reshape
the old bridge approaches to match up with the new bridge approaches
and restore vegetation near the old bridge site. Most of the work building
the new bridge was not visible from the road because of its lower profile,
but the demolition work is very visible – please use caution when driving
over the bridge, especially when demolition work is taking place or when
crews are working on the shoulders of the new bridge. To see pictures
of the bridge construction from start to finish and vintage photos of the
original bridge (built in 1909), visit our Flickr page at: www.flickr.com/photos/wsdot/sets/72157622044469081/with/4426752921.
The $84 million
safety-improvement project on SR 532 is funded primarily by the 2005
Transportation Partnership Program (TPA) gas tax. Crews broke ground on
the project in June 2009 and expect to finish this December.
Paving work and your morning commute
Crews work as quickly as possible to complete paving and striping work
by 5:30 a.m. and reopen the highway after nighttime lane closures. We
do everything we can to be off the road by that time, but occasionally
crews are delayed - like they were the night we switched traffic to the new
bridge and on Wednesday, August 18, when the lane closure at Pioneer
Highway reopened about 15 minutes late. We apologize for the delays
and appreciate your patience. We understand the importance of having
the road open on time for you each morning. We try to plan for everything,
but once crews start paving a section of roadway, they can’t stop.
It’s important for safety and quality that the section being paved is completed,
cooled and striped before opening to traffic. When planning for
your morning commute, please take into consideration any lane closures
that may be in effect and build in a little extra time for unexpected delays.
The good news is that we are almost done with the paving on this project.
GARDENING
PAGE
“Well its been awhile since I have been able to write alittle ditty to all those
happy gardners out there. Being busy in the fields myself. As the heat is
back on,so are the aphids and the havesting of garlic. These two are actually
a great combo. Garlic contains a couple of compounds that kill or repel
insects. It’s most effective against whiteflies, aphids and beetles. If you
don’t mind the smell. Blend one garlic bulb into 2 cups of water, strain and
spray on leaves and stems. Thouroghly cover both upper and lower parts
of the leaves and stems to keep insects away.*** The smell can last up to a
week in the garden and repels deer at the same time. It is best if you can
do your spraying early in the day or when it’s cloudy.Hopefully you are
seeing some great results from spring planting now. Onward hoe!!”
Safety became an added feature of children’s programs this summer at
through the parking lot. Lois Sharpe donated funds for four more turtles.
MOM & SON ART EXHIBIT
Seagrass Gallery is proud to present an exhibit of acrylic paintings by Jed
Dorsey and his mom, Ann Cory, now on display at the newest Islander’s Restaurant
located at the Stanwood Cinemas. The exhibit continues through
September. Jed Dorsey is an emerging artist born into a very artistic family.
Much of his training has come from his father, Jack Dorsey, a noted watercolorist,
and teacher. Jed is carving out his own style in acrylics. Ann Cory
Dodgson Dorsey paints under the name “Ann Cory.” Ann had the privilege
of watching her grandmother paint and illustrate on a daily basis while
she was growing up. Also during these years, Ann was an active member
of a family painting “club” (known as the “Grunt and Groan Club”) - which
included her famous grandmother and other talented family members.
Ann married Jack Dorsey and has learned informally from him through the
years. Ann and Jed are represented on Camano Island by Seagrass Gallery,
where you can always see more of their work and that of many other talented
regional artisans. You can always enjoy great food and outstanding
artwork at Islanders Restaurant at the Stanwood Cinemas, 6996 - 265th St
NW, Stanwood 98292; and at their Camano Island location at Terry’s Corner,
848 N Sunrise Blvd (where you can also enjoy the watercolors of Melanie
Serroels through September).
fabulous children and family resources available in our local area. For the
fun part we have bouncy houses, slides and obstacle courses scheduled.
We’re also looking for as many interesting vehicles we can find for the kids
to look at and climb on or through. For the education we would like area
businesses and groups to come and share information about the services
they provide for children and families. Would you be interested in participating
FISHING, HUNTING,
SHELLFISH INFO.
Time is running out… Summer Dungeness Crabbing is almost over! It will
be open Wednesday through Saturday next week, and then Wednesday
through Monday on Labor Day weekend. Still 2 pots per person, 5 crab per
person per day, 6 1/4 inches min., hard-shell males only.
Coho are just starting to round the bend of Whidbey Island; anglers are
reporting scattered sightings/landings of Silvers at Possession Bar. So it
will be another couple of weeks before we start to see a good showing
of them around Camano Island as they make their way to the Skagit &
Stilly rivers. That being said, there is always a chance you can land the stray
Silver Salmon at many of the popular Camano Spots(Elger Bay, Onamac Pt,
Greenbank, Camano Head or Rocky Pt to name a few).
Anglers are still having success catching Kings at both the Tulalip Bubble
and Possession Bar. Several 8lb – 15lb keepers have been brought in these
past 2 weeks from both of these spots. Most success seems to come from
White Lightning or Cookies & Cream spoons and green or purple spatterback
squids & flys. Whatever you use, make sure it is UV/Glow and put lots
of Herring scent on it to maximize your chances! Troll at 65-80 ft deep behind
a Purple Haze, UV Green, Green Glow or Army Truck 11” flasher.
THANKS COACH
JOHNSON!
Paul Johnson is hired at University of great falls
The University of Great Falls in Montana has hired Paul Johnson as the new
Director of Track and Field. Those of us in Stanwood & Camano Island know
Paul as the head track and field coach at Stanwood High School (from 1977
to 2009) and as the head cross-country coach. Johnson retired a year ago
after 36 years of education. “Our family and sons enjoyed your track camps
each summer. I’m sure all the other boys and girls and parents and friends
appreciated your service to our communities through track camps and the
high school track program. Your dedication and experience to teaching
them all about the sport, teamwork, fundamentals, and positive attitude
is a value to them all and is now a value to Great Falls, Montana. They are
lucky to have you there and we are more lucky to have known you and to
have been taught by you.” – The Shipleys
Pets Get the Back-to-School Blues, Too!
As the dog days of summer come to a close, teenagers will be heading
off to college and youngsters will be catching the bus each morning for
school. Pet owners themselves may also have to return to working 8 hours
a day, leaving a lonely dog or cat at home who is confused by the changing
household dynamics. Dr. Kandi Norrell is a clinical assistant professor and
head of the new primary care department at the University of Illinois Veterinary
Teaching Hospital in Urbana. She says, “it is important for pet owners
to realize that it is not unusual for cats and dogs to go through a funk
when everyone heads back to school.” The disruption in routine can be more
traumatic for some pets versus others. For example, if you own a dog that
is a herding breed, the change in pace may be particularly difficult. These
breeds tend to think of the children in the house as their “flock” to take care
of leaving them feeling lost or bored during their absence. Some of the signs
your dog may show if they are having a difficult time acclimating include
separation anxiety, destructive behavior, inactivity, depression, and even
stress-induced diarrhea. Though dogs are sometimes easier to read, cats
may display more subtle signs. “Some of the signs of emotional depression
in cats include lethargy (sleeping more than usual), changes in vocalization
(more or less dependent on the cat), and occasionally behavioral issues like
spraying or inappropriate elimination outside the litter box,” notes Dr. Norrell.
To try to prevent your dog or cat from experiencing a rough transition
period between the summer and fall, there are a few steps you can implement.
Most importantly, “start sooner rather than later,” stresses Dr. Norrell.
Don’t wait until the day your child goes off to college to start a new routine.
Here are a few tips to prevent “the back to school blues: 1: Maintain your
pet’s normal routine as much as possible. Try to avoid changing the times
that it is “let out” and meal times. 2: Increase physical activity--a laser light
for your cat to chase and a long walk for your dog may give them a natural
“feel good” endorphin release. 3: Leave a worn t-shirt or article of clothing
out for your pet to smell. 4: Explore options for doggy day care centers in
your area. 5: Reduce separation anxiety by providing positive association
with your absence (treats/toys offered when you leave), and avoid making a
big deal out of your arrival after returning home (it’s a “normal” thing). 6: Buy
a new toy your pet can play with while you are gone. Toys designed to challenge
your pet will occupy his/her time. You can find specifically designed
toys at major retailers such as those that require “working” for a treat.
Some owners consider getting another animal as a companion for the
one left at home. Adding a pet into a household may cause more stress than
benefit depending on the family and the current pet. If you do decide to
add another animal to your household, it is important to plan ahead and
make sure time permits for acclimation of the new pet to the household
and for the current pet to accept and bond with its new pal BEFORE they are
expected to make adjustments to being left alone.
LOCAL HISTORY
Camano Island & “The Great Slide”
Camano Island (pronounced ke-mei-no) is named for the Spanish explorer
Jacinto Caamaño. Charles Wilkes, during the Wilkes Expedition of 1838-
1842, named it MacDonough Island in honor of Thomas MacDonough for
his victory of the Battle of Lake Champlain during the War of 1812. Following
this theme, Wilkes named the body of Water between Camano and Whidbey
Island after MacDonough’s flagship the Saratoga. When Henry Kellett
reorganized the official British Admiralty charts in 1847, he removed Wilkes’
name MacDonough and bestowed the name Camano, which the Spanish
had originally given to Admiralty Inlet in 1790. Wilkes’ name Saratoga Passage
was retained. When the daylight low tides returned each spring, the
people would travel to the clam beds to gather the rich bounty uncovered
with each cycle. Camano Head, at the south end of Camano Island and in
sight of Tulalip Bay was a favorite, and very productive, clamming site. The
village at the site, located at Camano Head, was called WHESH-ud which
means “Splashing Water.”. Before 1840 this beach was overhung with a massive
outcrop of soil and rock. The area underneath had been undercut by
wind and waves. One unfortunate spring day in the 1830s this land gave
way and slid into Possession Sound as over 100 people, mostly women and
children, were gathering clams below. Not only were these people lost, but
many more perished in the tsunami wave that hit nearby Hat Island (aka
Gedney Island, located south of Camano, between Everett & Whidbey). This
tragic event is known as “The Great Slide.” In 1994 the Tulalip Tribes purchased
the Camano Head tidelands. Today this culturally important area is
the site of tribal ceremonial and subsistence digs. Tulalip children are able
to dig clams in the same place their ancestors did for thousands of years.
The Tulalip Tribes shellfish program manages healthy populations of littlenecks,
butter clams, horse clams, and cockles at this site. – Sources: www.
