Fresh fromthe farmArticle written byJon Stevens, TheOpen Gate Farm269 Russell Road,Camano Island.www.growinggardensforlife.orgFood For Thought“In the middle of Mexico is an art museum. A good friend fromStanwood was looking at the art when a dapper, well dressed olderlocal gentleman quietly approached and asked if he saw the differencebetween Mexican art and art from the U. S. After puzzlinga bit, our friend confessed he did not. “The difference,” the olderfellow observed, “can be seen when you consider that you werecolonized and we were conquered.” When we consider why othercountries don’t understand us, it may be that actually we don’t understandthem. We have never felt the boots of an oppressor. Theycan’t paint pictures of happy cornfields in Iowa because their culturewas shaped and formed by the commands of others who didnot care to understand. We were colonized, they were conquered. That creates very different cultural world views. This little story isbrother to one we were told in Tecate. As we dined on burritos witha buddy down there, he said you can see the history of a country intheir food. Look at a taco. The grain in the tortilla holding it togetherlike the land eternal. The beef on the bottom shredded or groundlike the hearts of the people. Lettuce showing the green of growthand hope but with the blood of the people in the red of the tomatoesmixed through it. Then a bit of shredded cheese…peace inlittle threads trying to cover and heal all that is below to be coveredonce again with the hot red sauce of people of compassion whoare dying daily for the right to live lives of hope. So what is the foodof our country telling us? How is our story seen in the hamburgers, the apple pies, the cupcakes waving American flags we will beenjoying this coming summer holiday season? We can use our foodfor a history lesson around the table, if we open our eyes and lookclosely. And does our art today say we are conquerors or a countryof compassion? Now there’s something to chew on!”CENTERCAFÉCenter Café offers 3 meals a day Mon-Fri for theWHOLE COMMUNITY to enjoy. Check menu at ourwebsite. Breakfast is served 8:00am. MORGAN’STALES“A reader stopped in to Morgan’s Tales this week asking for abook that her book club is reading. During our conversation wementioned how helpful it is to your reading to be part of a bookclub. Your own reading is informed by the responses of others. How often we read a book that is recommended by a friend sothat we can discuss the book afterwards. (I am currently readingSnow Flower and the Secret Fan at the recommendation of afriend with the expectation that she has seen different things init than I will. ) How are you planning for your summer reading?Maybe you have discovered a favorite author and want to readmore. Or maybe you have picked a new genre. Or maybe youare a member of a book club that meets regularly to discuss acommon book. One way to introduce yourself to some intriguingreading is to try to read through a book club’s reading list. Irecently found Oprah’s Book Club list on the internet and startedsearching Morgan’s Tales data base to see how many we have.Would you believe, we have (or have had – books move very fastin our inventory) most of the titles on the list. We’re missing 11of the 70 on the list I found. And in many cases we have othertitles by the author she selected. If you have another book clublist that you want to read through, or if you and a friend wouldlike to read the same book and discuss it, bring your request inand we can search our data base to help in your selection.”The Marketplace is full of new gift itemsfor all ages.• Crabbing season starts July 1st and we have what youneed for those crab feast get togethers.• Bread Farm is still delivered every Friday. MoonshineWisdom & WitStory by JackArchibald. For furthermoonshinewisdom and wetpowder wit, check out theSKEETER DADDLEDIARIES atwww.skeeterdaddle.netHEAT ADVISORYby Jack Archibald“I came in from weeding nettles that were stealing light andmoisture from my vegetables in their cold little garden plot and Inoticed I had broken a sweat. It’s a couple days from August so Iassumed summer might have arrived when I had my flannel-cladback turned. Hot! Man, it felt real hot. The rest of the country’ssizzling, maybe it’s our turn to fry. And yessir, when I struggledup my hill to the house, tearing off layers, one for winter, anotherfor spring, and reached the only working thermometer, itwas practically at the Red Zone, mercury ready to blow right outthrough the glass tube top. 67 degrees, it read. I cleaned my sweatsmeared glasses on my red bandana and peered once more. Coupledegrees shy of 70. But the way the temperature was boilingup, I would’ve bet dollars to icecubes we were going to bust rightthrough the big Seven O. I opened up a couple of windows eventhough the house was a little chilly, but I like to live dangerously.Plus it would be good to introduce some fresh atmosphere intothe hermetically sealed rooms that held mostly 2011 gases andodors. The meteorologists on the evening news would be writingtheir copy already. Heat alerts and advisories. Don’t lock your dogin the SUV with the windows rolled up --- Woofsy will look like abrat in a microwave when you get back. Drink lots of fluids. Tie awet towel around your neck, but not too tight! Stay indoors if youdon’t have a pool. Run the air conditioner at maximum coldness, full fan. Don’t wear your winter coats. And whatever you do, slatheron sunscreen every half hour with SPC 500 or more. Use lard ifyou have it. Thank God for the TV weatherfolks is all I can say. Saveus a body count nobody wants. I just pity the poor yahoos whodon’t watch TV, the ones crawling in their longjohns across a lawnrapidly going to desert, desperately trying to reach a faucet. Andthe sun, the implacable searing sun, cranking toward 70, beatingdown on their uncovered heads, another victim caught unawaresand definitely unprepared by a stealth Sound End summer. It may look pretty, but the negative impact it can haveon the landscape is far from pretty. Although many people knowthat the plant is called Scotch or Scot’s Broom (Cytisus scoparius),not everyone knows that the plant is actually classified as a noxiousweed and it is not to be sold or planted by anyone and itshould be removed when found growing on your property. Leftalone Scotch broom can take over a landscape, displacing nativeand beneficial plants. One plant can produce over 10,000 seedsper year and the seeds can stay viable in the soil for up to 50 years.Although the task seems daunting it may be possible to at leastslow and eventually stop the spread of this prolific invader withthe help of, not the army reserves, but a couple of very small littlebeetles named Exapion fuscirostre and Bruchidius villosus. Thefemales lay their eggs inside the plant’s seed pod, where the larvaehatch and consume the seeds. Every seed damaged by a beetleis one less future scotch broom plant. Last summer seed podswere examined from 10 locations on Whidbey and Camano Islandand the bugs seem to be doing a pretty good job. At some sitesthe attack rate was greater than 70%. The use of insects for managingscotch broom is an example of biological control. Biologicalcontrols go through rigorous testing to ensure they won’t attacknative or crop species. The beetles will never totally eradicate thescotch broom and will take several years to make an impact. Everyoneneeds to help if we want to rid island County of scotchbroom and other noxious weeds. Many methods can be usedincluding pulling the shrubs out, roots and all, using a speciallydesigned tool called a weed wrench. The Island County NoxiousWeed Control Board will lend out weed wrenches to individualsthat want to get rid of scotch broom on their own properties andnoxious weeds can be disposed of for free at the Camano Islandtransfer station. Now is the time to go to work on broom, beforethe seeds start popping. Please contact me if you need additionalinformation on scotch broom or other noxious weeds (360-678-7992; janet.stein@wsu.edu). “35

BLOG OFTHE WEEKAwesome Pet Calming TipsSkagit Farmers Supply Country Store (www.skagitfarmers.com.)Travel, unfamiliar visitors, loud noises and separation anxiety canturn normally well-behaved pets into hyper and destructive animals. While this behavior is frustrating, it can often be remediedwithout resorting to desperate measures. Try these tricks to helpcalm anxiety and reduce unwanted behavior in pets. This is a newfeature pagewhere we at theCrab Crackerexplore theinternet forlocal blogsto publish.www.TheCrabCracker.com1) Treats and Toys: Separation anxiety is one of the most commonreasons that pets misbehave. To ease separation anxiety tryfilling your pet’s space with pleasing toys and treats when you areaway. A toy that dispenses treats when played with will help keephim busy. If you only give him the toy when you leave, he maybegin to associate being left alone with a positive experience.2) Pressure Vests: Some experts believe that gentle body pressurehas a calming effect on a pet’s nervous system. Pressure vestswrap around the animal’s torso and apply consistent gentle pressure.Pressure vests are made of light, breathable fabric and canusually be worn for extended periods of time. Thundershirts, apopular brand of pressure vest, report an 80% success rate at reducinganxious behavior in cats and dogs.3) Holistic herbs and aromatherapy: Celebrity dog trainer CaesarMilan advocates the use of holistic methods like aromatherapyfor calming dogs. Products like Canine Calm mist spray can besprayed near an animal or massaged onto the animal’s body for acalming effect. There are many other herbal supplements on themarket that claim to calm animals holistically. Always check with aveterinarian to get recommendations on which supplements andaromatherapy methods are safest for your pet. It’s important to remember that each animal is different, withunique emotions and anxieties. Some methods may work on oneanimal and not on another. Don’t give up or become aggressivewith your pet out of frustration with their behavior. If you are havingtrouble controlling your pet it is a good idea to contact a professionaltrainer or specialist to evaluate your particular pet andsituation. Keep in mind that bad behavior could be caused by anunderlying medical condition. Rule out medical problems by takingyour pet to the vet for regular check ups.37

Trevor Harrison with the city’s Streetsand Parks Department got the project started and shared theredesign with skate park enthusiasts in March at the Davis PlaceTeen Center. Christie Connors, Director of the Community ResourceCenter helped organize the meeting with local skaters. The Centerprovided the pizza and the skaters provided feedback on thecity’s proposed design. Connors was one of the original park organizersin the late 1990s. Connors expressed her thrill at seeingthe revamped park. “These improvements are long overdue. I’mglad the city stepped up to provide skaters and others with a safeand healthy place to play in town.” The revamp cost the city a littleover $60,000 for the ramps, installation and 20-year warranty notedpublic works director, Kevin Hushagen. Not surprising thenthat there are so many references in our common lexicon, or thatwe refer to many phenomenon with circle and cyclic imagery.Yet when it comes to personal, practical applications- especiallywalking, we typically focus too much on the linear, barely graspingthis subtle way of making our lives easier. Many of you haveheard me say, “my practice is very simple.” Essentially I look for,and apply every chance I get the power of the circle. Scientificallyit’s easy to understand the reason the circle has such power:It requires much more energy to change direction than it doesto continue to move in the same direction. That is, angles create“stress.” Even on a psycho-emotional level, spending too muchtime in a room filled with angles can have negative effects. In thatcase, go for a walking meditation, and make your movements ascircular as possible. Good luck and good practice.”8712 - 271st StreetP.O.
