Programme Standards - TV<br />
DOMESTIC PAY TELEVISION PROGRAMME SERVICES<br />
1. For domestic pay television programme services, bad language should not<br />
be used in programmes or on channels likely to be watched by a large number <strong>of</strong><br />
children and young viewers. In other programmes or on other channels, the use <strong>of</strong><br />
crude expressions with sexual connotations, more explicit adult jokes and other<br />
<strong>of</strong>fensive language must be appropriate to the story line or programme context. <strong>The</strong><br />
use <strong>of</strong> downright <strong>of</strong>fensive language may only be permitted in programmes or on<br />
channels restricted for adults provided it is appropriate to the story line or programme<br />
context and not overly frequent and impactful. (For standards on triad expressions,<br />
please see paragraph 13(b) <strong>of</strong> Chapter 3 General Programme Standards.)<br />
8. Obscene or pr<strong>of</strong>ane language that is likely to <strong>of</strong>fend a substantial portion <strong>of</strong><br />
the audience is prohibited.<br />

9. For non-domestic television programme services, the licensee should be<br />
sensitive to language which has religious, cultural and racial connotations for the<br />
audience <strong>of</strong> the intended recipient countries and places.<br />

10. <strong>The</strong> use <strong>of</strong> downright <strong>of</strong>fensive language may only be permitted in<br />
programmes or on channels restricted for adults provided it is appropriate to the story<br />
