In order to contribute to a better understanding of the youth work landscape and to<br />

take account of the value of youth work in all 27 Member States 42 , the study was to<br />

provide:<br />

National reports on youth work, presenting a comprehensive overview of the<br />

tradition, development, legal framework, governance structure, and policy<br />

framework in relation to youth work as well as information about youth<br />

workers, the role, value and outcomes of youth work within each country;<br />

27 in-depth case studies presenting the stories behind the success of their<br />

initiative working with young people;<br />

An overview of the critical success factors associated with the case studies;<br />

A set of conclusions on successful youth work practices, policies and<br />

programmes.<br />

The approach to completing this work consisted of a combination of desk-research,<br />

consultation with a variety of stakeholders from a wide range of involvement with youth<br />

work, onsite visits of youth initiatives and a one-day face-to-face interactive seminar<br />

targeted at youth work experts. Each phase and associated activity is described in the<br />

table below:<br />

The first task of the study was to take stock of youth work in Europe today. This<br />

involved a review of already existing information on the topic of youth work as well as<br />

identifying relevant information for inclusion in the country reports. Sources included in<br />
