BULLETIN OF THE
EUROPEAN
PENTECOSTAL
THEOLOGICAL
ASSOCIATION
VOL, I NO, 1
1981

PRESENTATION
It is .the goal of the EPTA BULLETIN
to be an organ %o.r the furthering of the
goals of the European Pen tecos.ta1 Tlzeological
Association (see "EPTA, " p. 6 ) , .to
be an instrument of interchange, cooperation
and informa.tion. It desires .to heighten
the general awareness of .the ac,tivities
sponsored by members aiid member ins titutions
as well as ,the awareness of ,kheoloyical
and historical work (both terms broadly
understood) which comes f rorn .the Pentecostal
movement or which deals with that movement.
Thus, as in .this number, an attempt
will be made to provide news items, reviews
'of current publications, historical or theological
essays, and notices of recent publications.
Natzurally, the scope and effectiveness
of such an undertaking depends largely
upon the coopera~kion and good will of the
members !
It is expected t11a.t the EPTA BULLETIN
will be a regular quar.terly publication. Any
material con.tribu.ted after a number has gone
"to press, " w i l l be reserved for the fol.lowing
issue.
Any suggest ions made regarding c0n.ten.t s
and format w i l l be seriously considered.
One general rule: the EPTA BULLETIN will
be "multi-lingual. " Con.tributions will be
accepted in any European language--although
English, French, German and Spanish are perhaps
the most widely read.

Die deutschen Gemeinscha.Eten -- in ausgeheuden
1979): 310 pps. ~eviewed by David RUNDY,
Institute of Universi.ty Minis try, Leuven
Belgi.um.
This volume, based on a disse.rta.tion
written under the direc.tion of Prof. Dr.
Pa1.t-z of the FrJ.edrick-Scliiller-Ilr1iversi.t~.t
Jena, DDR, entails a scholar1.y presentation
of the Gemeinsch aftsbewegung , its tlieological
and social background as well as its early
history to about 1920. The cen.tra1. issue for
this period of the movement is the emergence
of the Pen.tecosta1 movement. Thus ,the history
of this pe,riod is irnportan't for understanding
(and the self-unders.ta.ndinq) both the Gemeinschaf
tsbewecjung and the Pen.tecos tal movement.
It was the Gerneinschaf tsbewegung which provided
the context in which the specific theological
emphasis of ,t.he Pen~tecostal. movement
could be formula~ted, find expression and
adherents. It was this same Gemeinschaftsbcwegung
which would strive to mairtain a
separa,te identity as an adversary of the
movement which was born from it.
Lange accepts the analysis of L. Thimme
that the Gemei~ischaf~tsbeweg~~ng is to be
understood, lals die Resultante zweier Seitqn-
--- Gemeinschaftsbewegunc~ ----- vom Standpunkt einer
christlichen Sozioaie aus (Schwerin, 1925)
D. 188, cited in Lange, pp. 15-16] These two
L -
foci (krancke, ~ichern and Moody, Robert
Pearsall Smith, Brighton, Oxford) are discussed
briefly in chapter two.
The third chapter is devoted to the
ili.troduction of the "higher I.ife concerns"
.to Germany (nota -- bene .the American perfectionistic
expec,takions) through th.e work of
Th. Jellinghaus , C. H. Rappard, 0. Stocltnmyer ,
J. Lepsius, S. Keller, - et. - al.
Chapter four deals with the ins.titutionaliza-tion
of that perspective in the Gnadau.
Pentecost Conferences (from 1888) and the
other conferences which sprang up with
similar spiritual concerns. The relations
with the state church are mentioned as are
the internal discussions about biblical
inspiration and sanctif ica.tion.
The revivals i.n Wales, the U . S .A. (Topeka
and Los Angeles) and Norway (T. 13. Barrat.t)
immediately attracted .the atten.tion of the
leaders of the Gemeinschaftshewegung provoking
according to Lange, a "crisis. I' A meeting
from 22-26 April 1907 at Brieg (Brieger
Bibelwoche) discussed the revivals wLth 9.
Paul reporting about his ,visit to observe
the Pentecostal revival in Norway. In June
B. Dallmeyer began to teach and lead others
in.to the experience of "Spealcing in Tongues .I1
This Rasseler Bewegung at:trac.ted .the hostile
attention of both church and state. The
meetings were forcibly stopped and Dallmeyer
renounced the experience and the doctrine and
became an active opponent (along with J.
Rubanowiksch, 0. Schopf and T. I-Iaarbeclc) of
the emerging Pentecostal movement which began
its own consolidation under the leadership
of J. Paul through the MGl.heim Pentecost
Conference (from 1909) and the periodical
~finqstgr6sse (I. 1 May 1909) .
Septembelr 1909 saw ,the vituperative
Berlin Declara.tion by ind:ividual-s of ,the
Gemeinschaftsbewegung against .the Pen.kecos t-
alists . Lange briefly clzronicles -the responses
of .tlie Pen-tecostals , -the oppositi.on and the
"neutral" groups, noting the decisively
divisive nature of the document.
The final cliap, ker of Lange's work deals
with the decade after ,the declaration. Here
the scope is limited s-tric-tly .to .the Gemeinschaf.tsbewegung
. There are three impor.tan.t
appendixes: (1) A chronicle of the Gnadauer
Pf ingstkonferenzen giving dates, places,
speakers, and the titles of the addresses and
sermons ; (2) Pif-teen documen-ts produced by
the Gemeinschaftsbewegung are reprinted; and
(3) a lengthy (though unclassified) bibliography
is given.
Overall, the volume is an adequate
chronicle of the everts a.t.tending ,the bir,tli
of .the Pentecostal. movement in Germany. Apart
from the ideological orientation, indicated
already by -the .tl..tle, .the work is admirable

for its scope, organization and documentation.
The presentation, however, c0nten.t~ itself
with the "what" but makes no serious effort
to articulate the "why. " It is precisely at
this point that the volume falls short of
what might be hoped for. Lange discusses,
for example, the influence of R.P. Smi-th,
W.E. Boardman, and others associated with the
American I-loliness movemen.t but fails to
understand that .the "perfectionism" in the
Gemeinschaf tsbewegung , or wha-t he calls the
"Gbcrspannte Heiligungslehren" of J. Paul,
was inherent in the Anglo-Saxon theological
synthesis adopted. Indeed a comparison with
Paul's contemporaries such as H. A. Baldwin,
P. Palmer, A. Mahan, E.E. Shellhammer and
J. A. Dowie would have indicated ,to the author
that J.Paul had much tempered the message
as well as what was expected of the believer
in response to that message. It is no
accident that this same theological synthesis
provided the intellectual and spiritual.
context for the Pen-tecostal revivals in the
U.S.A., France, Norway, Sweden, Chile ....
