New Faculty and Staff ADAM BECK, JD, joined The American College in August 2013 as Assistant Professor of Health Insurance. He is the instructor for HS 345 Essentials of Healthcare Reform, HS 346 The Healthcare Consultant, FP 77 Introduction to Healthcare Reform and HS 351 Health and Long-Term Care for Seniors. Adam is an attorney who most recently practiced law in Philadelphia and has worked for Sellers Dorsey, a national healthcare consulting firm, two Presidential campaigns and the U.S. Department of Justice. C.W. COPELAND, Ph.D., joined The American College in July 2013 as Assistant Professor of Insurance. In this capacity, he conducts scholarly research in behavioral economics and teaches graduate-level business courses. He is the instructor for FA257 Essentials of Life Insurance Products and HS 323 Individual Life Insurance. He is also a regular guest on radio and television shows, addressing audiences on financial planning strategies. Prior to joining The College, Dr. Copeland served for 13 years as an adjunct professor in the School of Business at Clark-Atlanta University and 15 years as an instructor with RS Thomas Training Associates, providing pre-licensing training, continuing education and business development advice for financial services professionals. FACULTY IN THE NEWS 10 A DECADE OF PROGRESS MELISANDE McCREA, Ph.D., joined The American College in July 2013 as Associate Dean of Academics and Executive Director of the New York Life Doctoral Program. In this capacity, she assists with administration of The College’s academic programs and professional designations. Dr. McCrea most recently served on the faculty at Eastern University’s School of Management Studies where she taught research methods at the graduate and undergraduate level. Earlier in her career, she led the video communication efforts of Penn State University. Dr. McCrae’s areas of expertise include outcomes-based curriculum design, assessment of student learning, Human Performance Technology and research design. THOMAS ARMINGTON joined The American College as Associate Vice President, Assessment, Institutional Research and Examinations. He is spearheading The College’s assessment efforts focused on developing a repository of data on student and institutional outcomes, and developing the process for using that data for continuous improvement. The purpose of assessment is to demonstrate the degree to which The College is fulfilling its mission of raising the level of professionalism of its students and, by extension, the financial services industry, with the larger goal of strengthening the financial security of the individuals, families, businesses and societies they serve. Tom has experience in large-scale data collections in the education, employment, and workforce training areas, with his most recent position being Senior Program Analyst with Mathematica Policy Research in Princeton, N.J. Dr. Craig W. Lemoine, CFP ® , recently completed his Ph.D. in Personal Financial Planning from Texas Tech University. He is also finishing his term as Chair for the CFP Board’s Council on Education. Dr. Wade Pfau published, “Analyzing an Income Guarantee Rider in a Retirement Portfolio,” in the Journal of Retirement, Vol. 1, No. 1(Summer 2013), and co-authored with Dr. Michael Finke, CFP ® , and David Blanchett, CFP ® , “The 4 Percent Rule Is Not Safe in a Low-Yield World,” in the Journal of Financial Planning, Vol. 26, No. 6 (June 2013). He also appeared on the San Diego radio show, Your Money Your Wealth, in August 2013; and, in July 2013, on the nationally syndicated show, Retirement Radio Network. Dr. David Nanigian recently presented “Capitalizing on the Greatest Anomaly in Finance with Mutual Funds” at the World Finance Conference. He also received media coverage for “5 Things You Should Know about Targetdate Funds” (Interest.com, July 15, 2013) and “Why Hyperactively Managed Funds” (Research Magazine, July 2013). Gerald J. Herbison, DBA, MSM, CASL ® , ChFC ® , CFP ® , CLF ® , completed all the requirements for his DBA in August 2013. He received his degree from Wilmington University in Delaware. 36

Ph.D. Program Lifted by Generous Gifts The new Ph.D. in Financial and Retirement Planning received major support from New York Life luminaries in 2013. Sy Sternberg, CLU ® and Frederick J. Sievert, MSM, together gave $1 million to The American College to fund a doctoral fellowship. The Sy Sternberg and Fred Sievert Doctoral Fellowship will attract doctoral fellows who will conduct state-of-the-art research on financial issues related to retirement. Robert A. Miller, a longtime New York Life agent and past president of NAIFA, has also made a significant gift to the Ph.D. in Financial and Retirement Planning program at The American College. The $125,000 gift, made in honor of his father, Sidney M. Miller, CLU ® , is funding scholarships for Ph.D. students who are New York Life employees. Sidney M. Miller was a top agent at New York Life for over 60 years. He passed away on December 5, 2013 at the age of 86. He started the family business, now known as Miller-Pomerantz Insurance & Financial Services, in 1951. His son, Robert, joined the business in 1982, and his son, Jonathan, followed in 1992. Honoring Sidney’s many years of service to the insurance industry, Robert’s gift will support the education of the most promising Ph.D. students. The research and teaching efforts of these Ph.D. fellows and students will expand the body of knowledge on financial issues related to retirement, further establish The College as a thought leader in the field, and help shape the future of the industry.
