W F R S weitzman family religious school Freda and Nathan Schepps Youth Program Congregation Shearith Israel is very pleased to recognize Dina Eliezer for being selected to participate in an innovative training program to equip Jewish educators with knowledge and skills to help integrate technology into their educational settings. Dina is among a group chosen from hundreds of applicants to participate in this program through USCJ. We are very proud of Dina and recognize her for her continued efforts and enthusiasm to make our religious school relevant and exciting. Save the Dates! HOW IS THIS YEAR DIFFERENT FROM ALL OTHER YEARS The word year in Hebrew - shanah and the word change in Hebrew - shinooy share the same root. A new year in essence suggests that a change is taking place. Inspired by the holiday of Pesach that we just left (and I am about to start preparing for, as I write this article) I share with you a Weitzman Family Religious School version of the four questions: IN ALL THE YEARS… We learn Hebrew. We learn about Jewish history, Holidays and tradition. THIS YEAR… We solidified our understanding of the prayers and our fluency in reading them. We are following a program that will allow us to be familiar with all the services that are led in the synagogue and all the holidays that we celebrate. Students progressed in their Hebrew reading according to their levels and were able to get a sense of pride in their accomplishments. We had family programs for all grade levels where parents and students came together for learning. Our 3rd graders received their own Siddur in a meaningful ceremony where they led the Friday night service. Our 4th graders led the Mincha service and havdalah and some students for the first time read from the Torah. Our 5th graders lead a Passover seder following a Haggadah that they all created. Our 10th graders will be confirmed in a beautiful ceremony that will conclude in a dinner and a special presentation titled “I am a Jew…” IN ALL THE YEARS… We have opened our doors and included children with special needs in our program. THIS YEAR… We expanded our services for our students with learning differences by providing them advocates in the classes to help them during the instructional time. Teachers received an in-service with instructions about the specific students that are in their classrooms. We also reached out to the community and invited families with children with special needs to join our Purim prep session and we trained our 6th graders to facilitate the children activities. IN ALL THE YEARS… We perform many acts of Mitzvah. We raise tzedakah money to assist various organizations and causes. THIS YEAR… We sent educational material, decorated kipot and greetings for the New Year to a small Jewish community in Uganda. Students were bringing tzedakah money to every session and we are able to collect enough money to send to various organizations that the students will select. Our High School students volunteered at the Vickery Meadow area, met with the Heart House staff, and led some activities for the children who live in the neighborhood. IN ALL THE YEARS… We connect with Israel through studies. THIS YEAR… Two of our confirmation class students joined the Israel trip. Our High School students also deepened their studies and understanding of Israel’s history and the situation in the country today through discussions and lectures. We teamed up with a school in Akko, Israel. Our 5th and 6th graders corresponded with them and exchanged projects. Students in the elementary school wrote me letters to take to Israel with questions about Israel. They received the letters back with answers and comments about Israel. “Got Shabbat!”, our once a month youth service, is a great addition to our program. We added an art teacher to our staff to boost hands-on activities and to offer another way of learning. Our confirmation class will present the synagogue with a gift for the Sukkah that they are creating. They will leave our school with a mark of their participation in Jewish education growing up at Shearith. There are many more things that we did this past school year, and there are many more things that we did not and will make sure they are not missed as we plan the coming year. May the Elijah’s cup, symbolizing the future messianic redemption, Miriam’s cup of water, symbolizing hope and renewal in present time, be also symbols for the “changes” and “repeats” in our lives.
