Several lead<strong>in</strong>g tyre m<strong>an</strong>ufacturers are look<strong>in</strong>g to identify alternative, non-fossil based synthetic<br />
rubber for vehicle tyres. Bio-isoprene has been successfully produced by the D<strong>an</strong>ish comp<strong>an</strong>y<br />
Genencor, one of the leaders <strong>in</strong> the production of enzymes for second generation biofuels. The<br />
comp<strong>an</strong>y is prepar<strong>in</strong>g to build a pilot pl<strong>an</strong>t <strong>in</strong> 2011 to brew more bio-isoprene, which it pl<strong>an</strong>s to<br />
sell to Goodyear <strong>an</strong>d other tyre m<strong>an</strong>ufacturers. Goodyear says it expects to have tyres suitable<br />
for road test<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> mid-2011.<br />
Other major m<strong>an</strong>ufacturers are look<strong>in</strong>g to substitute black carbon filler with silica, fossil process<br />
oil with vegetable oil, <strong>an</strong>d poly-isoprene with chemically modified natural rubber. Through such<br />
substitutions, the Sumitomo Rubber Industries for Dunlop have m<strong>an</strong>aged to reduce the fossil<br />
content <strong>in</strong> the Enasave tyre to only 3%. The Yokohama dB Super E-spec tyre uses chemically<br />
modified natural rubber <strong>an</strong>d process<strong>in</strong>g oil derived from or<strong>an</strong>ge peels shipped from or<strong>an</strong>ge juice<br />
factories, reduc<strong>in</strong>g fossil content of the tyre to 20%. Michel<strong>in</strong> uses sunflower oil <strong>in</strong> its Primacy<br />
MXM4 all-weather tyre.<br />
All these tyres, by reduc<strong>in</strong>g their fossil fuel content, reduce the dem<strong>an</strong>d for oil <strong>in</strong> the<br />
petrochemical sector. They also save further CO2 emissions from the large share of the billion<br />
tyres discarded every year that end up be<strong>in</strong>g burned <strong>in</strong> cement kilns.<br />
