GUIDELINES ON
PROMULGATION
OF NAVAREA WARNINGS
Introduction
1. The world
has been
divided into twenty
one (21) definite geographical sea
areas named as NAVAREAs by the International Maritime
Organisation (IMO)
for the
purpose of promulgating
radio navigational
warnings
under the World
Wide
Navigational Warning Service (WWNWS). The delimitation of NAVAREAs as
depicted in Para 2.2.2 of Joint IHO/IMO/WMO
document
Special Publication no. 53
is placed at Appendix ‘A’. The Chief
Hydrographer to the Govt. of India has been
nominated as the
coordinator of NAVAREA VIII region which generally encompasses
the Indian Ocean
Region (IOR) including the Bay of Bengal (Fig. 1) and is authorized
to provide search
and rescue information for broadcast by
the IMO.

2. NAVAREAA warnings
contain critical information on
Navigational safety, which
cannot
await their inclusion in the routine Notices to Mariners (N to M). These
include
information on failure of important aids to navigation, occurrences
of new
wrecks/shoals and such other dangers to navigation as well as information, which
may necessitate
change to
planned routes of ships at sea. It is therefore necessary
that the
Navigational information is promulgated
well in advance to facilitate safe and
economical maritime operations and maritime traffic is fully aware of the navigational
dangers likely to be encountered during their intended voyage.
3. A NAVAREA warning means a navigational warning or in-force bulletin
promulgated as part of a numbered series by a NAVAREAA Coordinator. By definition,
