C A P I T A L O P P O R T U N I T I E S F O R SMA L L B U S I N E S S E S Rural Business Enterprise Grants The Rural Business-Cooperative Service makes grants under the Rural Business Enterprise Grants (RBEG) Program to public bodies, nonprofit corporations, and federally recognized Native American tribal groups to finance and facilitate development of small and emerging private business enterprises located in rural areas. To assist with business development, RBEGs may fund a broad array of activities. There is no maximum level of grant funding. However, smaller projects are given higher priority. Generally grants range $10,000 up to $100,000. Average grants awarded up to $75,000. Grant funds do not go directly to businesses. The SBIR/SBTR programs are operated by federal agencies that have substantial R&D budgets, through a set-aside mechanism tailored for competitions among small businesses only. ARPA-E's mission is to fund projects that will develop transformational technologies that reduce America's dependence on foreign energy imports; reduce U.S. energy-related emissions (including greenhouse gasses); improve energy efficiency across all sectors of the U.S. economy and ensure that the United States maintains its leadership in developing and deploying advanced energy technologies.
