Preparation for assembly Drying T he parts should be completely dry, imme- diately after the cleaning, which must be performed using soft, clean cotton cloths. Note : Compressed air can also be used for drying the parts, except for the roller bearings. B - Wear (with visible lowering ) on the race of the cover or cone and/or deep indentations (figure 35). C - Cracks or breakages in the seats of the cover and/or cone, or in the surface of the conic rolls. CAUTION: The recess chambers must be very clean and dry to avoid later contamination. Inspection It is of paramount importance to inspect all the unit components fully and CAUTIONly, before they are reassembled. This inspection will reveal the parts with excessive wear or cracks, which should be replaced. Figure 35 D - Signs of friction in the conic roll cage (figure 36). Inspection of the Roller Bearings Inspect the roller bearings of cylindrical rollers and/or conic rollers (covers and cones) including those which were not removed from the seats upon which they were mounted, and replace them if they have any of the following defects: A - Excessive wear on the wide surface of the conic rolls, with almost total elimination of the central lowering, and/or a worn radius, with a sharp edge, on the wide surface of the rolls: (figure 34). Preparation for assembly Inspection of the Crown and Pinion Pair Inspect these gears, noting if there is any wear or damage, as cracks, depressions, splits or splinters. Also check the seats of the roller bearing cones and the notch of the pinion. Note : The CROWN and PINION are machined gears coupled in pairs, to ensure the ideal contact position between their teeth. So, if it is necessary to Exchange a damaged crown or pinion, both the gears of the pair should be replaced. IMPORTANT: If it is necessary to replace a damaged satellite or planetary gear, Exchange all the gears, including the thrust washers. The combination of new and old parts can lead to premature failure of the unit. Inspection of the Unit Satellite Box Inspect the components of the differential system and replace the parts which have depressions, cracks, excessive ovalization in holes and semi-holes or excessive wear tin the work surfaces. Also check the work areas specified below (figure 39). Inspection of the Half Shaft Check if there are cracks and excessive wear in the notches or teeth and also if there is ovalization in the flange holes. Inspection of the Differential Box Observe if there are fractures in any surface or burrs in the machined regions. SATELLITE BOX INSIDE SATELLITES AND WASHERS Inspection of the Universal Joint Fork Replace the universal joint fork, if it has excessive wear in the working area of the sealer lips.
