CONSTRUCTION
Of the highest quality, precision made from nonwarping
white and clear acrylic, with main dials 3
mm thick and subsidiary dials 1.5 mm thick. All
scales and lettering are clearly and sharply
engraved, not printed, and are filled in
multicolour’s to facilitate use. In addition each
calculator purchased comes in a PVC wallet which
includes a comprehensive instruction booklet

branded wallets with clients’ names and logos on the
front for advertising purposes.

Standard instruments are calibrated in S. I.
Metric units, but most of them are also available
in similar designs calibrated in Imperial units

THE HISTORY OF M. H. MEAR
M H Mear & Co. was founded by Norman Mear in 1947, when he first produced a Gas Flow Calculator which
made calculations relating to the flow of gases in cast iron and steel pipes. The original calculator was produced in
Ivorine, which was a thin plastic. Unfortunately, the Ivorine had a tendency to warp and so a different material was
later used for all calculators, this being cast acrylic. Originally all the calculator parts were engraved by another
company until an engraving press was installed in-house in 1963. The calculators were sold by mail order mainly
in the UK but agents were soon appointed jointly to distribute Mear calculators in Canada, USA, Australia and
New Zealand.
Other calculators followed the Gas Flow Calculator, including
calculators specifically designed for customers. The Gas Flow
Calculator and the Pipe Flow Calculator for Liquids and Gases
(Turbulent Flow) were translated into French and German for
Audco, Newport. The Electric Lighting Calculator and Glare
Index Calculator were translated into Swedish for a Swedish
company. Calculators were produced also for the National
House Builders, Angus Fire Hose, A 0 Smith Corporation in
the USA, Hepworth Building Products and the Methane
Drainage Calculator for the National Coal Board.
In 1994 the company was sold to its present owners. David
Mosley, Director, comments,
“I guess many people would believe that circular slide rules
were a thing of the past. It is simply not the case. Business is
good. In 2005 the company moved into bigger and more
modern premises and extended the range of calculators even
further. Our customer base is spread across the entire globe
they all hold Mears as a brand name in very high regard.
Today the tradition of consistently producing high quality and reliable calculators for a range of home
and industrial applications remains the central focus of the company. Jana Mosley, Manager, added,

consuming but as a team it is our focus. Mr Mear would feel right at home and hopefully proud that
his methods of production remain almost unchanged since 1947.”
AVALIABLE NOW - Mears Calculators for PDA’s
The Mear’s Domestic Central Heating Calculator (based on First Principles) is now
available on PDA (personal digital assistant) thanks to a collaborative agreement between Mears
and leading software developer AMTECH Power Software.
Harnessing AMTECH’s expertise in producing innovative mobile software solutions for building
services trades, the co-development programme will focus initially on Mear’s most popular
product, the First Principles Domestic Central Heating Calculator.
M. H. Mear’s director David Mosley commented, “We have been listening to some our customers
who have been asking for Mears to develop a software version of the heating calculator to work
alongside the traditional hand held circular slide rule. We spent a long time looking for a software
partner that would complement our own strengths and add value to the physical calculator.
AMTECH’s expertise and impressive track record provide very strong synergies to the M H Mear
offering. The software, which is available now, enables more detailed calculation of
radiator, boiler and pump sizes; the software version will allow all calculations to be saved in the
software or printed as a report. Consequently, it will provide a complete audit trail to demonstrate
compliance with relevant regulations and best practice procedures. Such information may also
become part of future ‘home information packs’.”
