2. PRIMERGY SX30 basic functions 



The external storage subsystem SX30 is designed as a capacity extension for the PRIMERGY server family. It is completely adapted 

to the PRIMERGY family concerning design, HD technology, HD cage and integration into the PRIMERGY management concept. 

Current technology like SCSI Ultra320 and high disc capacity up to 2TByte (with up to 14 new 146GB HDs) in confined space 

(3 HU as Rack-version) are the outstanding properties of the subsystem. Two different versions for capacity extension (Single Node) 

and cluster solutions (Dual Node) are available. 

- Both versions of the PRIMERGY SX30 subsystem are available in a 19'' rack version and a floorstand version. 

The PRIMERGY SX30 takes only three height units (3 HU) in the rack. 

- The cabinet has two bays for redundant power supplies with hot-plug abilities. The hot-plug capability of the PS 

modules can only be used in a redundant arrangement. 

- A UPS is recommended for the use of the PRIMERGY SX30. 

- On default the subsystem is equipped with two redundant fans. They can be exchanged online without switching off the system. 

2.1. General configuration notes on storage subsystem PRIMERGY SX30: 

- Every power supply needs an external power cord. For the Rackversion 2 power cords are included in the rack 

installation kit. For the Floorstand version one country specific power cord must be ordered per installed power supply. 

- The 14 HD slide-in units are divided into two independent segments with 7 places each. A cascading of the two SCSI segments 

from one or several SX30 is not possible. 

- The SCSI IDs of the hard discs are allocated automatically by the location. 

- The "Hot-Replace" function for HDs can only be used in conjunction with a corresponding RAID configuration (e.g. RAID Level 1/3/5). 

- PRIMERGY SX30 operates internally and on the external lines exclusively with LVD signaling at a speed of Ultra320, Ultra160 or U2W SCSI. 

- Integration of the PRIMERGY SX30 in ServerView and the use of RemoteView requires no additional components. 

The whole communication for server management is done over the SCSI buses to the SAF-TE section at the I/O-modules. 

- The subsystem PRIMERGY SX30 does not supports a CAN bus! 

2.2. Configuration notes for PRIMERGY SX30 capacity extension (Single Node) 

- One PS module is installed as standard. For redundancy a second PS module is needed (power cords see above). 

- Two SCSI Input modules are included in the PRIMERGY SX30 basic version.

2.3. Configuration notes for PRIMERGY SX30 Cluster (Dual Node Ultra320) 

- The SX30 Cluster-version (PRIMERGY SX30 BU RH U320 Cluster) is only released and certified for Windows2000 Advanced Server 

and Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition with following systems: PRIMERGY RX/TX200, RX/TX300 and RX/TX600

In a cluster both servers must have an identical configuration. Independent of the used servers, a maximum of one SX30 

subsystem is permissible. 

- To operate the PRIMERGY SX30 Cluster, the following RAID-controllers are released exclusively: 

LSI 2Channel 320-2 2 channel Ultra320 Order-No. : S26361-F3006-E128/L128 

1) The controller requires the SW-Kit V6.00-06 (FW: 1F30, driver: W2K mraid2k.sys 5.44, W2K3 mraid35x.sys 6.38.2.32) 

In the server TX200, TX300 and RX300 (S1 generation) is at least the BIOS version 1.08 necessary. 

- RAID-controllers for internal HDs (e.g. operating system HDs) are restricted to 1-channel (S26361-F3005-xxx) and 2-channel 

(S26361-F3006-xxx) from LSI and the Host-RAID-funktionality of the respective server released. Zero-channel RAID-controller 

from Adaptec in cluster-configurations are not released. 

- The basic versions for clustering includes already two PS modules for redundancy as standard (power cord, see above). 

- Also two Dual-SCSI Input modules are mounted as standard in the basic version of the SX30 U320 Cluster. 

- PRIMERGY SX30 Cluster operates internally and on the external lines exclusively with LVD signaling at a speed of Ultra320. 








2.4. Configuration notes for PRIMERGY SX30 Cluster (Dual Node Ultra320) under PRIMECLUSTER for Linux 

- The SX30 Cluster-version (PRIMERGY SX30 BU RH U320 Cluster) is applicable under Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 2.1 and 3, 

as well as SuSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 8 with all PRIMERGY Servers released for these Linux versions.

In a cluster both servers must have an identical configuration. Independent of the used servers, a maximum of one SX30

- To operate the PRIMERGY SX30 Cluster, the following RAID-controllers are released exclusively:

1) The controller requires the megaraid driver versions aat least 1.19.6 (for SLES) and 1.18 (for RHEL). 

In the server TX200, TX300 and RX300 is at least the BIOS version 1.08 necessary. 

- RAID-controllers for internal HDs (e.g. operating system HDs) are restricted to 1-channel (S26361-F3005-xxx) and 2-channel 

(S26361-F3006-xxx) from LSI and the Host-RAID-funktionality of the respective server released. Zero-channel RAID-controller

Part 4: Upgrading the PRIMERGY SX30 

The modular concept of PRIMERGY SX30 enables various upgrades (later also the upgrade from single node to dual-node). 

The upgrade is done by adding different components. This can partly be done online by the user. 

Adding a second redundant power supply 

The Upgrade kit SNP:PS-F598E1-P, a second redundant power supply, can be added. 

The upgrade does not include any power cords. 

Passive-cluster basic variations of SX30 are already containing 2 power supplies. An upgrade is not possible. 

Every power supply needs an external power connection. 

To upgrade a SX30 to a SX30 U320 passive cluster variation 

By exchanging both SCSI-Input modules by two U320 Dual-SCSI-Input modules (S2361-F2360-L2 , 

this part number contains only 1 dual SCSI input modules, therefore it must be ordered 2 times.) 

the subsystem SX30 can be upgraded later for a U320 passive-cluster use. In this case you have to consider 

that the SX30 cluster variation is only released with 2 power supplies. If only one power supply exists, 

you have to order a second one: SNP:PS-F598L1-P. 

Also with upgrades, you've got to be aware the notes under "1. PRIMERGY SX30 General Notes".
