Patent Not Pending
Pascagoula engineer awarded first patent for
Huntington Ingalls Industries
Ingalls Shipbuilding
Electrical engineer Louis Dusang Jr., second from right, accepts his final patent check on behalf of Ingalls Shipbuilding. Dusang earned a patent for developing a
method and computer program for double fault protection of an ungrounded system with potential applications for future Ingalls-built ships. Presenting the check
are, from left, Blair Ritchey, design integration manager; Rick Lane, director of Engineering Technical, and Nick Richards, electrical engineering supervisor.
Achieving a patent for a new idea can be a long and winding
road that often takes years.
Pascagoula electrical engineer Louis Dusang Jr. took a trip
down that road and arrived three years later with the first
patent for Huntington Ingalls Industries.
“I cannot express how happy I am,” Dusang said. “It was
a long time coming from concept to putting it on paper to
having the U.S. Patent Office affirm our work. I’m excited that
the idea we patented has implications that could improve the
ships we build.”
Ships work on ungrounded electrical systems. When more
than one fault or power surge occurs on a shipboard electrical
system, they can cause power outages throughout the ship.
Dusang developed a system to protect the ship in the event
that two different ground faults occur at the same time.
Dusang’s idea first came about while working with Jeffrey
Roberts, an indepent contractor who lives in Idaho.
“Jeff and I were working on a multi-function relay protection
device for LHD 8,” said Dusang. “It is a combination of earlier
systems. That’s when the idea occurred to me. He became
a springboard for ideas and helped me implement our test
model.”
According to Dusang, for an idea to become patented it has
to be more than an idea. It must be an original plan that can be
proven.
“Coming up with the idea is the easy part. Implementing it
was the hard part,” Dusang said. “We modeled the system to
test it using computer programs.”
Ingalls Shipbuilding paid for the process at the U.S. Patent
Office and Dusang did the research and modeling. Both he
and Roberts are named on the patent.
“Going through the patent process, like much of what we do
in Engineering, requires a lot of patience,” said Rick Lane Jr.,
director of Engineering Technical. “Thanks to Louis’ efforts,
we have a patented idea that will make our ships better.”
The team that will implement Dusang’s idea is led by
Blair Ritchey, design integration manager.
“Louis is unique in that he is always thinking two or three
steps ahead,” Ritchey said. “Ingalls is lucky to have employees
like Louis, who develop solutions before problems occur.”
Ritchey said the patent Dusang received has potential
to increase business opportunities, profits and customer
satisfaction for future ships.
Keeping clean
New addition to improve pipe cleanliness
Pipe bender specialist Joseph Hallman cleans a pipe detail in the Pipe Shop’s new cleaning facility.
For the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard, the only good pipe is a
clean pipe.
Ingalls Pipe department recently teamed up with Facilities
and Environmental Health and Safety to create a new, worldclass
pipe cleaning facility.
“We’re excited about the construction that will take our
facility in a new direction,” said Mike Brandt, craft director
for Pipe. “It enhances our ability to build clean from initial
fabrication to ship delivery, and to produce the quality our
customers deserve.”
"Clean pipe is crucial to shipbuilding," said Operations
director Ron Wilson, "because a small amount of debris can
have a devastating effect on shipboard equipment."
Wilson said a Build Clean strategy was developed to address
those concerns and plans were implemented to ensure pipes
were built clean and sealed, but that slowed productivity.
“Our Pipe washing facility was unable to keep up with the
quantity we needed to meet the demand,” said Greg Reus,
Pipe manufacturing engineer. “We also had environmental
concerns because of our outdated storage tank.”
Working together with Pipe and Environmental Health
and Safety departments, Facilities devised a plan and in six
months built a new building with everything needed to clean
pipe quickly.
Pipe bender specialist Joseph Hallman, one of several
craftsmen cleaning the pipe, said he loves the new facility.
“I’ve got more room to move around and can wash the pipe
details better,” said Hallman. “Now we can stack more in
and trade them out as soon as we get them washed.”
The new facility includes bay doors wide enough to
accommodate front-loading forklifts, hoists for craftsmen to
move pipe details around, more covered storage space and
better drainage and wastewater storage.
“From an environmental standpoint, the drainage trench
and larger tank with remote monitoring sensors prevent
spillover of soapy wash water and other compliance issues,”
said Mark Ross, manager of Environmental Engineering and
Resource Recovery. “The better lighting and elimination of
tripping hazards also help prevent injuries.”
Kurt Oberhofer, director of Facilities, said that EH&S
played an important role in designing the new pipe cleaning
facility.
“We share a family relationship with EH&S,” said
Oberhofer. “When we build, we look at ways to be good
environmental stewards. We aggressively seek areas with
potential for waste discharge. We saw that potential and
prevented it with the new storage and drainage options.”
“Facilities engineer Mickey Walley worked closely with
all parties to ensure the design requirements were clearly
defined,” said Tim Hardy, Facilities Engineering manager.
“Project manager Anita Allen, planned the construction and
ensured clear communications with the contractor, EH&S
and Pipe.”
Allen said weekly meetings with her customers during the
six-month construction period produced a successful outcome.
“Our goal is customer satisfaction and it feels great to have
accomplished that mission for all groups involved,” said
Allen.

Making History
Avondale, Pascagoula
ships complete MELOs
one day apart
Melanie Burdwell, left, test electrician and U.S. Navy Lt. Chris
Schindler, LPD superintendent, look on as test engineer Allen Albert,
Test & Trials department, activates the main diesel engine aboard
Anchorage (LPD 23) at Avondale last week.
Outside machinist Chrysta Jackson removes panels from an LPD 24
engine so it can be monitored during the lightoff.
Jeff Stewart, propulsion workleaderman; Mickey Wood, senior test
engineer; and U.S. Navy Lt. Andrew Bond, main propulsion assistant
initiate the lightoff aboard LPD 24.
Preparing engines and spaces for a main engine lightoff
is a process requiring many months of quality work by
multiple crafts. And completing two in a week is unheard of.
Despite the challenges, two LPD ships completed MELO
within a day of one another last week.
“Two MELOs on two different ships at two different sites
is unprecedented at Ingalls,” said Doug Lounsberry, vice
president of the LPD Program.“This required extraordinary
coordination of the Test department, Navy Supship, Navy
Test Team personnel and our vendor, Fairbanks Morse
Engines.”
Thursday, Jan. 19, shipbuilders on Anchorage (LPD 23)
lit off their first main diesel engines, 1A and 1B, in Main
Machinery Room 1 at Avondale. And in Pascagoula on
Friday, Jan. 20, main diesel engines 2A and 2B in MMR 2
were activated on Arlington (LPD 24).
Eventually the four engines on each ship will provide more
than 41,000 shaft horsepower to drive the LPDs through the
water at speeds greater than 22 knots.
“Main engine light-off is always an important milestone
in delivering any ship to the Navy,” Lt. Chris Schindler,
U.S. Navy LPD ship superintendent, said at the LPD 23
MELO. “We’re well on the way toward getting this ship to
sea. It’s a major achievement for the Ingalls LPD team and
Navy personnel who have worked tirelessly to get us to this
point.”
“These lightoffs are a test run of the engines to prove they
function along with all the systems connected to them,” said
Jeff Stewart, propulsion workleaderman for LPD 24. “We
completed the initial testing of the systems at earlier stages.
Now we’re testing them all together, and it takes everybody
to get these engines to come to life.”
“Achieving this MELO milestone allows our team to move
ahead with mission systems testing,” Tommy Bell, LPD 23
general ship superintendent, said.
LPD 23 ship program manager Bruce Knowles said
now that MELO is complete, Avondale shipbuilders can
concentrate on the ship’s next major milestone -- builders
trials.
“We are working to ensure that everything is functioning
as it should be leading up to trials. I’m proud of the LPD 23
team for achieving MELO, but we still have a lot of work
ahead of us,” Knowles said.
“We are grateful to the Navy, Ship’s Management, our
craft men and women, and our vendor, Fairbanks Morse,”
said Kari Wilkinson, LPD 24 ship program manager.
“Coordinating both events in such a short timeframe was an
outstanding accomplishment.”

Employee Engagement Survey continues
Ingalls shipbuilders are reminded to participate in the third annual
Employee Engagement Survey being conducted through Feb. 1. Engaged
employees take ownership of their work and are personally accountable.
The 2012 survey will measure the next stages of employee engagement.
The voluntary, confidential survey only takes a few minutes to complete
and will be conducted on the clock. The results will be shared with
every shipbuilder to generate genuine dialogue between employees and
their leaders. This year’s goal is to improve on that dialogue and create
successful teams that will help ensure the company meets its safety,
quality, cost and schedule priorities.
Earn your GED while at work
CARES of Mississippi and Workforce Training and Development are
