SPECTRAL SCATTERING TECHNOLOGY
FOR FOOD QUALITY AND SAFETY EVALUATION
(FPE-701, IET-348) – INVITED PRESENTATIONS
Monday, June 21 – 2:30PM-5:00PM
Location: 316
Moderators: Yankun Peng and Renfu Lu
Spectral scattering technology has recently emerged as a new means for food
quality and safety evaluation. Compared to conventional near-infrared
spectroscopy, spectral scattering technology can provide better quantification
of the scattering and absorption properties of turbid media in the visible and
near-infrared region. This special technical session, co-sponsored by FPE-701
(Physical Properties of Agricultural Products) and IET-348 (Electromagnetics
and Spectroscopy), has invited researchers from the United States and abroad
to give talks about the latest progress in spectral scattering technology research
and to discuss issues and challenges and new applications of the technology in
food and quality and safety inspection.
• Estimating Optical Properties of Apples During Controlled Atmosphere
Cool Storage – Laszlo Baranyai
• Optical Characterization of Biological Material: A Multiscale Approach –
Wouter Saeys
• A Comparison of Optical Measurements in Turbid Media – Paul Martinsen
• Hyperspectral Imaging-Based Spatially-Resolved Technique for Measuring
the Optical Properties of Horticultural and Food Products – Renfu Lu
• Light Backscatter Applications in Milk and Dairy Foods Processing –
Fred A. Payne
• Photon Migration in Skeletal Muscles and its Potential Application for
Characterizing Beef Tenderness – Yao Gang
• Spatially-Resolved Spectral Scattering Technique for Simultaneous
Assessment of Multi Quality Attributes of Pork – Yankun Peng
• Laser-Based Optical Scattering Technology for Direct Detection and Typing
of Foodborne Bacterial Pathogens – Arun K. Bhunia
Technical Session #149
PERSPECTIVES IN INDO-U.S. COLLABORATIVE
PROJECTS – INVITED PRESENTATIONS
Monday, June 21 – 2:30PM-5:00PM
Location: 330
Moderator: Ganti S. Murthy
Invited session to discuss challenges and opportunities for establishing
collaborations with institutions in India. Presentations will be followed by a
panel discussion
Featured speakers: Dr. Ramesh Kanwar, Iowa State University; Dr. G.S.V.
Raghavan, McGill University; Dr. Gajendra Singh. Indian Agricultural Research
Institute (IARI); Dr. Jeyamkondan Subbiah, University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Abstract: AABFEIO will conduct a session focused on Indo-US collaborative
projects. Speakers from various universities in North America will provide their
perspectives on collaborative projects with institutions in India. They will share
their experiences, and insights into the processes, existing mechanisms,
avenues for funding and lessons learnt in collaborative projects. Presentations
will be followed by an open panel discussion. The session is aimed at
stimulating discussion amongst members, encourage formation of new
collaborations and bring valuable insights to members for future collaborative
efforts.
